All the seals on the diff are changed and the diff is back on the car. But did the noise disappear?

I’m also curious what type of grease you used? And is it just on the insides of the bearings or where all do I need to grease?

I can’t say enough good things about Elin’s skills as a Mechanic, Enginner, Car Crafter, Teacher, not to mention “film maker”! I have watched and enjoyed every episode on the 66 Spitfire, and plan to watch all the others as time permits. I do have a question about the “story line” on the “66 Spit” though. This latest episode talks about the 1296 engine. How did that come about? Is this the engine that was in the car from the beginning? Or is it a replacement? What did I miss and why did I miss it? I have a “69 Spit” project car on which my efforts have been delayed due due to health issues that I hope will be resolved in a few months. In the mean time Elin has effectively thrown me a “life line” to keep me “in the game” during this time, for which I am very grateful! Now he has me thinking about getting a mini lathe (another dream of mine!). What a guy!

Thank you for the nice words Al, I am happy my efforts bring joy to someone :) Yes, the story line got a little bit confusing when it came to the engine on the 66 Spitfire. I never took good care of the original engine during the restoration and unfortunately I realized that was a big mistake when I actually started driving the car. So over one winter while the car was stored away from the shop, I decided to rebuild another engine and install it in the car in the spring, as I couldn't get the one from the car out where it was stored. That other engine was the one from my 68 Spitfire, which was conveniently stored in the shop. The idea was to rebuild this engine, install it in the 66 temporarily while I rebuild the original one. That would let me enjoy the car as soon as the spring comes and also would give me a head start on the 1968 Spitfire restoration. You can watch the rebuilding process of this engine in the 1968 Spitfire playlist on my KZbin channel as this is where this engine belongs. Now I have a slightly different idea though :) Since the 68 engine is still in the 66 Spitfire (3 years later LOL) I might just keep it there and obtain a GT6 engine for my 68 Spitfire, which is still waiting for the day when it will be pulled out of the corner and restored. I hope that makes it a little bit more clear.

Elin Yakov's Rusty Beauties - Thanks for the explanation. It is all clear now. Will follow up with viewing the ‘68 engine rebuild video. That should keep me occupied for a while. Glad to see you are having so much fun with these cars. I used to enjoy them when they were all much newer! ( a new ‘63 TR4, two used TR -3’s, one new Spitfire, and two used ones, all over a period of 15 years. Don’t know how I got away from all of that that but am looking forward to recapturing at least some of the excitement again, and your videos are a big help!

I drill a small hole in the seal and run a screw in it. when you tighten th screw it pushes the seal out.

Oh, that's a nice trick to know. Thanks!

Will not work on the Triumph pinion seal. There is nothing abutting the back of the seal except the open bearing. The screw will travel through the seal and enter the bearing thus causing damage and ruining the bearing. You can use this method only if you plan on replacing the bearing.

Just starting to work on my dif for my ‘65 mk2 and I’m wondering what all I should do? Cars been sitting for 40 years and has 94000 miles on it. Should I switch out bearings and seals? Is the fluid drainable or need drained? Any help would be appreciated!
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties Жыл бұрын
I would definitely change the seals. The rest depends on how it feels. If I remember correctly there is a drain plug on the Spitfire, so an oil change would be a good idea if it has been sitting for 40 years.

Thank you! I’m new to this, what would a good bearing feel like outside of the differential without ever driving the car to know how it drove?

Hey Elin! Did you rebuild the diff ever? Or did you just do the seals? Mine seemed fine for the 5 miles I drove it, but it leaks from all the seals like yours. Do you regret not breaking it all the way down?
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t go too deep if it doesn’t have an issue. Just change the 3 seals and the two output shaft bearings. You have to take the bearings out to change the seals and it is kind of hard to take the bearings out without damaging them. I figured for what they are worth I just squeeze them on the vice until the outer race breaks and the inner one is easy. Came up with this idea on the 5th diff a few days ago 😂 I don’t remember what I’ve done with the spitfire diff, but that was a long time ago so if you want to see a fresher one find my GT6 diff video from a few months ago. It is the same diff

@@RustyBeauties hahaha I like your approach. Sounds like a good plan. I need to get the outer case nice and clean so I can put some paint on it too. I like the silver you have it painted. Nice contrast in colors. I just bought myself a 20T Shop Press too, so putting those new bearings in should be a breeze. I hope…. Haha. Thanks Elin!

@@StevesProjectCarGarage just put a rag on top of the bearing if you decide to do my vice trick. The hardened metal shaders like a glass and might cause some serious damage. The inner race I also squeeze on the vice and the smack the shaft with my lead hammer. It took me 3 min to take the shafts apart a few days ago on a customer’s diff and that is usually the hardest part

Not nit picking just want you to know I'm following closely. Did you replace the gasket between the axel seal housing and the diff? Usually see you using permatex.
@cheftush
@cheftush 7 жыл бұрын
Keith Edginton I don't think there is one Keith...I know there isn't one on a TR6. Some people do use a little permatex but if the flanges aren't bent then it shouldn't be necessary. Cheers, Tush

cheftush I stand corrected. I looked it up prior to posting but was looking at the outer axle hub assembly. See you soon?
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Chef is right, I was surprised there wasn't a gasket there and I looked it up too. No gasket. To be honest I don't remember if I used permatex, it was so long ago :) And yeah, you will see Cheftush soon. We are planning roughly end of September or maybe early October if that is OK with you of course. I've got my paperwork done so one important step closer :)

Yeah, I see what you are talking about. It looks like a crack and it actually might be a crack, but it is after the seal, so it doesn't need to be perfectly sealed there. I can see that the cup was actually just tacked in 2 or 3 places from the factory. The rest is just open.
