The great Elio Pace and his tremendous band with a joyful and dixie-fuelled fabulous version of the Elvis Presley yuletide classic 'Blue Christmas' live on 'Weekend Wogan' BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, December 19th 2010.
We all know what a big Elvis fan Elio is, which is why it's even more amazing (and the mark of the great artist that he is) that he, once again, makes this song his own. He never tries to sound like Elvis and yet delivers a vocal with all the style and coolness of the King, showing heaps of respect for his idol. Elvis is somewhere sipping his sherry and enjoying a mince pie smiling down enjoying every minute of this wonderful performance.
This was from the final show of the year and turned out to be the final 'Weekend Wogan' as we came to know and love it. For reasons best known to themselves, the BBC decided to not continue with the show in this format i.e. at the Radio theatre with a live audience and more bizarrely, without Elio and the band. Needless to say, the current 'Weekend Wogan' is just not the same.
The BBC stopped filming 'Weekend Wogan' after the October 3rd opening show last year at the London Palladium. They thankfully brought back the cameras for the final three shows of the year with this very last show going out live on the red button.
