pressing backspace on your keyboard will get you out of any menu including dss, I prefer to use voice packs for ship operation cos I can't see my keyboard in VR lol, tho I still use m/kb for flying, the "nipple" on the F and J keys helps me know where I am

I have had trouble using the heatmap. Is the hot portion where the target is? Because I have landed in the middle of many a heat signature and it's catch as catch can.

i've never read much useful information about those heat maps. scanning the planets will usually add a few points of interest to the menu, i use it for that. otherwise, afaik, whatever you're looking for is in "the blue area.." somewhere... which often is most of the planet's surface. it seems kind of useless. some people claim you can pick up a knowledge of the kind of terrain most likely to host whatever you're looking for, and just make sure it's in the blue area. but yes it does seem to come down to just landing and trusting in the random number generator

exploring isnt the only use for them if you like me thought you could skip scanners & scanning =D you do need to brush up on it as its used for engineering material hunting & gathering, the first one push for domino if you rely on the mission board to get locations it seems like it'd take longer than seeking out the appropriate system states & economies then scan for irregualr thingys & crash sites

If you have odyssey and the appropriate suit, you can go scan that stratum on foot and get some serious money for it. If you get first foot fall, that payout goes WAY up.
