Hi, I find your comments fascinating :) If you're playing in a faction or as part of a squadron (in the bubble or colonia) then missions (both on foot and in space) are a massive part of the game (they're almost the entire game in fact) and I suspect that they're about to become a huge part of Powerplay 2.0 as well. From my perspective (as the leader of a faction and squadron) missions form the framework of almost everyone I play with on a daily basis. Ships, In the case of the type 8 specifically it absolutely fills a niche. Its a large capacity freighter that can get into a medium pad (allowing it to land on outposts and take advantage of their markets). It also has native SCO support meaning it handles better in that mode and can outrun pirates and ne'er do wells better in situations like open (or indeed in solo or PVE). Similarly the Python Mark 2 has a better chance of catching it of course :) I don't wish to get into a race to the bottom ...but just for context. I'm 56 years old. Most of our squadron are similarly aged and many are much older (some in their 70's and 80's) ...I know the same is true for many of the other larger and older better know squadrons as well. If you're playing alone and only do one or two things in the game then perspective is super important when looking at an update like this. Hope that helps. o7

@@TheBuurPitcan you please share more videos of you doing missions? I also lost interest for them, because it was not easy to find the reward I was looking for, it feels too much random. I know that I can trade later, and it makes sense to not have all materials available in any station. It would be nice to have more guidance to find a station/mission providing specific materials as rewards (a tip from the bartender?) and maybe a way to find people to help you in exchange of something to not play alone and have incentive to help others. As always, thanks for the quality of your work.

@@mathiasklubaI think what he might mean about missions being a part of the gameplay is the BGS. When you are supporting a player or NPC minor factions in taking more systems then you will run missions to gain influence for the minor faction. That is not to say you can't get good rewards from missions. Sometimes BGS conditions allow missions to spawn where they want you to mine materials that also happen to be available in certain stations markets. They are wing missions so you get a full wing of people sharing those and you can massively profit!

@@TheBuurPit Sorry just getting back to you and thank you for responding to my message. Honestly I've been here in the game since the 3rd month of its release, Ive got 2 BGS in game, Ran 3 different squadrons. After 7 years straight at least 8 hours a day every day didn't miss one. I had to start taking year breaks only ever coming back when they added something. It's just a shame that it seems they are trying some what this late in the game to really do things. Again good for the one's that have just stuck around and new players when/if it gets some I know there is a slow trickly from some of these updates but no one sticks around that long. I'm back once again to check out the new stuff but as I stated in the start of all this I feel it's a little too late. Just my thoughts and they don't mean anything I still love the thoughts of all the crazy times I had but now that no one every stays on the game longer then a week now to just check out the new stuff then leaves again I cant get that feeling anymore. Never any REAL active players I mesh with is one of my issues these days all my OGs moved on. I do still like the thought of the game

Who does the missions? That seems strange. Players do missions for fun. Each mission triggers a mini game loop that players find entertaining, exciting or relaxing. We do it for fun. If mats roll in alongside these missions - all the better. Don't we all play for fun? Why else would we play a computer game?

I am deeply concerned with the state of FDev at the moment. They keep making all of these good decisions and common sense improvements and I'm worried it will lead to making the game more engaging and interesting. This could cause serious issues of fun and enjoyment.

A lot of those videos being truly negative and down-right scathing no less. If you aren't happy with a game, that's fine. No game suits every person. But do you have to create a video trying to pitch the narrative that your low opinion is the only correct and urging everyone else to quit? No. Just quit playing the game. But negative reviews feed the minds of negative people which puts money in the pockets of negative creators. So I'm glad we have people like Cmdr Burr and The Burr Pitt, Obsidian Ant and others. It's such a breath of fresh air to have some positivity in the world! Also, much respect to Burr as he's not shy about criticising FDev when there is a legitimate problem; which is totally fair.

The obvious thing FDev is overlooking in my opinion is bringing the ship and on-foot modules closer together by making ship materials available through on-foot content and vice versa. It still feels like two different games with little overlap were awkwardly grafted together.

This is a much needed addition, though I can understand why they don't include it. IF they do include it, maybe keep it so on-foot gameplay can award only a small amount of ship materials and ship gameplay awards only a small amount of on-foot materials. I don't want to be shoehorned into ship content if I am focus on foot, and vice versa. It should act as a small reward rather than an incentive.

Wait, what? Frontier made engineering & material the only option to customise space suits and handheld weapons in Odyssey and they made if even more akward than engineering ship modules in Horizions (lower material storage limit, not all materials can be traded at NPC traders, no pin blueprint function to keep track that materials are needed, no material traders at engineer bases, no chance to unlock slots for mods at engineer bases...) and you don't like it? How can that happen? Engineering and material grinding was the most beloved game mechanic in Elite Dangerous Horizion, that went wrong? ;-) [this posting may contain traces of sarcasm].

Finally, FDev decides to reward players for having fun. Having toyed with the Thargoid war for a while, I'm pleased that this encourages players to have a route of progression, rather than needing to make a tremendous investment into engineering. New players might not be able to buy a Krait or have the materials for Guardian weapons, but they can probably scrape up credits enough for a couple of gimballed AXMCs and dogfight with the Scouts.

Brilliant as always! I am so ready for these changes to Engineering. Am bracing self for all the P2W cries from people... My Vulture is way beyond that pre-made one. Am tempted to get the T8 early just to support the game development - I want them to keep taking Elite relevant to the shareholders. More they like it, the more we get. Remember everyone, it's voluntary, it will be in game credits soon - just like the P2. What they DO need to do is prevent spawning of Arx bought ships in the Pilot's Federation systems for newbies... You summarise this perfectly at the end.

I’m not sure they’ll do anything about the newbie zone honestly. Only starting in horizons lets you even enter that zone now, and with the full elite dangerous + odyssey together often being all of $7 USD on sale… I strongly suspect the main demographic of new players will have odyssey. I actually got a friend into the game recently and funnily enough it looks like they fixed the long standing wtf about odyssey start, where once you finished the on foot tutorial it would leave you in a planetary port without a ship and no directions on how to get one. Now it actually gives a “choose your package” screen showing the free sidewinder and the pre-built ships. Which I’m sure will lead to some crying about pay to win but, it’s regardless a welcome UI fix.

This is much needed. Engineering in particular needed sorting out years ago. My only concern is other than starting again, I generally am sort of at a point where I am bored and don't know what to do. Reflecting on this Combat Elite is the only thing left I need to do, and for that I need a combat engineered ship. A lot of content creators documented how to engineer ships, but the endless grind to achieve this really really really made my eyes bleed. It just did not appeal. At all. I just don't get time. This update however does make a difference. It will give me another arc to pursue. I like combat, I am just not very good at it, so working to get materials in a more productive way will be very welcome. The game should be about work, effort and achievement. But also is about enjoyment. FUN. This update is long overdue, and very much needed. I tip my hat to who drove this, but it could have happened sooner. Potentially then I could be looking at playing more, getting combat ships, getting Elite rank, then looking at exploring, Guardian sites etc, but mainly exploring. I do feel sorry for the excellent players out in the black (eg Cmdr Picard) that essentially can't benefit from any changes to the game because they never come back to civilization! If progress is faster, based on experience starting again could be easy to do as a seasoned player. It does suggest unless new players come into the game, the thought on buying pre-built ships might be pointless. For seasoned players, they will know the routes to get where they need to faster, and with readily available materials then this will be even faster. So custom built ships will only appeal to new players. FDEV need new players. That said, NEW ship types such as Python MK2 and Type-8 do appeal as they are totally new. We don't want a constant stream of new ships - we aren't Star Citizen, but a steady stream of new ships would be welcome. A competition for Cmdrs to design new ships/SRVs etc would be good? Fixing multi-crew is another thing that if they can get right will be very welcome too. I don't play in Open, and I don't really play and interact with other players - it is an online game. Multi-crew fixed would go a long way to help bring people together with multi-crew roles and activities. Something that occurs to me. If a ship can carry two SRVs, with multi-crew could you both drive at the same time on a planets surface? I doubt it, but that would be cool? Thanks to Cmdr Buur and all other content creators. Without you we would have given up years ago on what in my opinion is my favourite and most immersive game. I have irl stuff to deal with, but my hope is to get a Python MK2, and see what it can do, then get those materials, and go from there.

All of the engineering changes are most welcome and long awaited. Increasing the number of mats per instance makes good sense and means less time wasted doing the frontier flop (re-logging) especially in HGE sites where time is so critical. Other changes I think would make good sense are, being able to 'undo' engineering modules for 'on foot' weapons and suits in the same way you can remove engineering upgrades from ship modules and adding an extra engineering slot for G1 so there is a module available for each level. Some modules, like noise suppressor & Audio masking (Why are there two silencers?), scope and magazine size should be purchasable items to and bolt on/off as you wish like in RL

I'm literally out on a grinding field trip with a friend's carrier and we finish our trip this weekend xD After 4 years in the game, avoiding engineering the entire time, and finally deciding to do it, I do a material run literally the week before these changes drop lol

After three years of denial I finally decided to work myself through the learning curve of on-foot gameplay to get some suit and weapon upgrades, mainly for BGS reasons. I've been doing this now for about three weeks and as I slowly get to grips with it I start enjoying those missions, and even if I die I just write it off as experience gain. I did manage to get a suit from G3 to G4 and some mods for it as well, but I also did dread the grind waiting for me get all the mats for further upgrades for that and other suits. But it seems I may be great luck and these changes will be very welcome. Naturally I am going to hold off for that one week and see how these numbers will change. But it does sound very good.

I just saw on a stream that G4 to G5 suits/weaps are now about half what it used to be to go from G1 to G2.

Great update, as always, thanks Cmdr. Looking forward to taking the Python MK 2 for a spin. But I'm very keen on the engineering changes. I'm of those rare creatures that doesn't mind the current grind too much, but probably because I'm used to it from other games (X3's Hub Plot will break your very soul) and I'm still somewhat in the honeymoon phase of my ED experience. That said if these engineering improvements mean I get to do multiple builds and switch between them rather than focusing on one build, then I'm definitely keen.

Thargoids, I have not even seen one, they pull me out with their ships but they don't go toe to toe with me! I got a riffle if they ever do. More MATS! YES! YES! Arty suits are getting a lift too so something is going on there...future hypothetical..a base to build out of the bubble; yeah I don't think so. Now put the game back on sale so I can buy it for my son. I could put up a bullet point of the things I hear! You did cover my thoughts on the bullet points. I get this one can't we buy a slot at a station or some home base I don't want a carrier. I myself left for almost 2 years and came back 2 months ago. Nicely shot video!

I don't know if I can afford to get the Type 8 in early access, but I definitely want to get one, one day. I've been waiting for the engineering update! I have several ships I want to put SCO drives into and then engineer them, but just doing that for my primary ship (Asp Explorer) was just a P.I.T.A. that I have yet to acquire an SCO for any other ship. Hopefully this new system for gathering materials will open that door a little wider for me.

Minor nitpicks about the game aside, the engineering grind has been the biggest drain on my desire to play. After getting about half of the available ships in the game fully kitted and engineered, and nearly full module storage, I just couldn't do it anymore. It utterly broke me down and I stopped playing over a year ago. These changes are absolutely massive, and I am so eager to dive back in when the changes go live. As always, thank you for the meticulous nature with which you report E:D news!

I love my Mk2 and am going to get a Lakon Type 8 as soon as I can. I bought 80k ARX as a way to get money to Frontier. I have been playing since Beta, and think that is a fair way to get some cash into the game for continued development. I have just started running some on foot delivery missions as a way to familiarise myself with settlements with lower risk, not no risk-( you can still get shot in the back if you move too fast!) It is opening new trading opportunities as well. All good stuff. The news about mats is excellent.

Oh wow! Man oh mam. I will definitely be throwing some money into Arx to get the Type 8. That decision is all too easy. Those changes are gonna be a big thing to include more engineering in game. With limited time, I tend to do a minimal amount and do my best with that. But.... with these changes I think it will be A LOT easier to complete all those wishlists I have on the engineering side of the game. Great freaking video you two. o7 o7 o7 CMDRS The Krait 8 or bust!

I was hoping for engineering becoming a "put materials once, use credits to apply new ones" to make experimentation easier. But these numbers are indicating that experimentation is going to still be easier by just making materials more abundant and easier to burn through & restock. I just wasn't expecting FDev to boost the numbers THAT much.

I am not the most experienced commander out there, but I have 1800 hours into Elite:Dangerous, and the engineering grind made me quit the game. I am really hoping the changes are large enough to make a difference, and allow me to have some fun with different builds again. I have two fully engineered explorers, one medium and one large engineered cargo/laser mining ship, one engineered core/whatever the deposit mining was called ship, and one medium and one large PVE ships. I have been to Sagitarius*, Beagle Point and Colonia, and done some of the sightseeing tours recommended to me. Felt the excitement of the LTD rush. Done the Wine runs in my carrier, and used that to get carriers for the people i played with. Explored sectors that was uncharted with two friends, and many hours of canyon racing in my little speed boat or in fighters while exploring. Genuinely loved the game to bits. Started to build an AX ship to take part in the community goals when they shifted towards AX fighting. Felt my soul leave my body when i needed mats for engineering and uninstalled the game less than two hours into the farm.

I like to see things simplified more. Just as you would see in real life. If you needed work to be done on your car, would you go out to try and find nickle for the mechanic? No, you'd just want to buy it. Everyone wants cash! Imagine you were an engineer; think of how much raw materials you would get in a day. That's great, but you cannot sell them. Hence cash would be worth more in the game. Still keep rare items to unlock engineers. And maybe mats for the experimental effects. No matter which roll you choose to earn credits, raise the danger level for each of them to make it challenging. I miss the Robigo days where the cops would keep following you. That was fun!

The Engineering rebalance sounds great, especially how much mats one can expect to get from an HGE, I just hope that the probability/frequency of some types of HGEs is also reworked. The last time I needed Military Supercapacitors, I only found one after an hour.

So, for on foot engineering, FDEV's goal with its multiple suit paradigm seems to be to get us into more suits and more weapons so that we are more inclined to buy more skins for said suits and weapons.

I treat engineered modules like Gollum’s precious. As such I struggle for module space and have 6 Type 10s just for module storage. If it’s easier to engineer maybe I can (*gasps*) not hoard quite so voraciously? This might be amazing…

Wow! I never thought I'd see the day... Amazing. I'm happy to see these changes and will be paying for the T-8 as encourage FDev. Do you think that a lot of this change is a result of Braben stepping down? I can't believe the progress they are attempting to do this year and how well they are targeting the changes. Never thought I'd see the day!

A comment levelled a lot is "do the Devs actually play the game?" I think most do, but unless they all have passion and drive to force the good things over the line, then this is a problem. But that problem was leadership. Elite Dangerous is not supposed to be like the original Elite. David Braben has given so many great things over the years, and whilst we can't say issues with the game have been down to them, there was something fundamentally wrong in leadership. Other than the revenue issues, it looks like someone in leadership plays the game, ENJOYS the game and has said "why is Engineering broken? This is dumb and should be fixed? Fix it". And the Devs that could easily have fixed this but were blocked gleefully said "Yes! By your command" I do feel sorry for some of the Devs. As with any job, there is a sense of excitement and enjoyment doing something you love. But work politics and other factors really really does suck the life out of you. I hope there is a change of direction. It looks like it. It is good for players, but will be good for the workers, and ultimately FDEV revenue. For normal people in the world it is common sense. Listen to the customer. Listen to the staff. If leadership listen to themselves because they know better (and don't play the game), that is where things go wrong. Thankfully someone is listening, that person(s) needs to keep playing, keep listening, keep supporting the Devs and the players and keep delivering.

As someone who is thinking of retuning, could you define what you mean when stating SUBSTANTIAL. Do the various material's now give more than three each or is there just considerably more material's of the same nature to aquire? Which in the difference would be that of bring considerably more limpet's depending on size of limpet controller. One can utilze a couple with short duraation's and distance to that of a longer duration, and a longer distance.

I lead a squad that focuses on reducing the grind and overall suck that comes with starting this game. We have protocols for standing up a new player, that involve a HUGE time sync, and to that end we look for a certain personality that's gonna make good on our time investment, and not get completely beaten by the boulder that fdev expects us to eat playing this game. These changes are very exciting for us, because it reduces the amount of dedication required for a player to go from "what is all this crap" to hauling a fleet carrier across the galaxy and back like its nothing. These changes mean we can spend more time PLAYING the game, and less time preparing and studying to play the game. The Power Casuals strongly approve of these developments.

I've been very curious about the Type 8 as a trader, and these new rewards for working in thargoid systems are giving me some interesting ideas about what such a ship might be capable of in that role. As I'm not really a PvP player the Python Mk II isn't really attractive to me vs the Mk I, which I see as a more flexible ship. My Python does most of it's work as a heavily armed core miner, but with a quick stop at Jameson, I can run cargo, passengers, or a mix of both. The Type 8 might just be the ship that gets me to Park The Python for some, or all of those missions. The Python is still sexier, though. I love that big snake...
