There is a reason why a lot of actresses passed at the time. They all knew it was a Hail Mary, at best. Berkley was very unknown at the time, and she was not that popular on Saved by the Bell anyways, so she took her shot. It failed, but at least she tried.

​@@user-zv5jd6yg7z Charlize Theron auditioned for the role but didnt get it and considering she was unknown at the time she would have done it 100%. She was almost in place of Elizabeth. When she came to L.A Charlize had a reputation as an easy girl and was known to go around the clubs and bars hunting for directors or famous people and throw herself at them basically she would do anything for a role in the movie. This is known in the bizz. She dodged a career bullet by not getting that part because with this movie she would have been reduced to a softcore B movie actress for the rest of her career.

It wasn’t a great film but people held it up against Basic Instinct which was wildly unfair. BI was a game changer. I think pretty much everyone at this point understands Berkeley took way too much heat for this. And now these types of films go relatively unnoticed when they bomb. The whole allure and gimmick of this movie's casting was that Elizabeth Berkley had been known as the smart girl on "Saved by the Bell, dressing in her jeans and vests and relatively demurely compared to her cheerleader friends, and here she was as a completely naked stripper. While the people wise about films would have been intrigued about the latest from Verhoeven and Eszterhas, most people of the younger generation would not have cared otherwise.
