A wonderful story, what a fascinating life this remarkable lady had. The fact that she had a lovely family life away from plots and intrigues at the Tudor Court was a success. Beautifully done. Thank you, Sir 🙏

I suspect Edward, as the legitimate heir, would have been King first and Henry after him as Edward died young (and any sons or daughters of Henry's after that).. Thus Mary + Elizabeth would not have reigned. (And the Jane Grey plot wouldn't have taken place).

Bessie Blount and Mary Boleyn both outshone Anne Boleyn, who was very graceful, intelligent and knew how to dress well, dance and play the lute, was no beauty. Something about her obviously attracted Henry. Bessie and Mary were mistresses and, although their stars did not shine as brightly as Catherine's and Anne's, their stars did not fall so dramatically. They both kept their heads and went on to have lives after their affairs with Henry. It would have been interesting if Henry Fitzroy had lived. What would have happened, I wonder, if he had outlived his half brother Edward - would the crown of England have gone to him?
@rebeccaorman1823
@rebeccaorman1823 Жыл бұрын
Probably not. There's the matter of his being illegitimate.
@rebeccaorman1823
@rebeccaorman1823 Жыл бұрын
To expand. Henry Fitzroy was illegitimate a fact that would have made him unacceptable as king to most of the English people. Furthermore, Catherine of Aragon was extremely popular with the people due her care for the common people while she was queen. This popularity carried over to Catherine's daughter Mary. The people refused to see Mary's claims set aside in favor of Lady Jane Gray who had much better claims on the crown than Henry Fitzroy would have. Jane had Edward's will and Mary and Elizabeth having been declared illegitimate at various points. Henry Fitzroy had no legal claim to the throne due to his illegitimate birth. Therefore, it's extremely in probable the Henry Fitzroy would have ended up with the throne. He might have claimed it but he wouldn't have kept it.
@susangavaghan
@susangavaghan Жыл бұрын
@@rebeccaorman1823 Henry might have named him as second in line to the succession as he was male and his son. Before Edward was born there was speculation that Henry intended to make him ;legitimate. Also that he intended to wed him to his half sister Mary. Henry did bend the rules to suit his own purposes.
@HistoryRoadshow

You make some great points Susan. We'll of course never know what would have happened if Fitzroy had survived, but in my way of thinking there was a good chance Henry would have named him as heir. 😊

@@rebeccaorman1823 after Anne’s death her daughter was casted out as illegitimate as well and she still became Queen! Yes usually illegitimate children never go to rule but it think simply because he was claimed by the king infront of everyone even being illegitimate I think if he had lived he would’ve taken the throw simply because he was male and recognized by his father

Childbirth was a very risky business at that time! Something that would now be easily treated at this time could kill both mother and child then. Infant mortality was appallingly high. Read Shakespeare, babies were commonly referred to as "it", not by their names or he or she. Families tried to protect themselves from getting too attached because so many children died so young!

The king had no use for a pregnant mistress, sex not being allowed during pregnancy in those days. He dumped them when they became pregnant and never reconciled with them. He usually had affairs when his wives were pregnant, but his affair with Bessie lasted longer than all the others - not that he had many long term affairs but I do believe he had casual affairs and one night stands with willing ladies who may have been visiting court, or when he was in France.

I still wonder what may have happenned , had the kung a knoledge his son, Henry Fizrot and have him in line as a successor. More history is needed on Bessie, no one knows where she is even buried or how she died, but it is Ssimed ut wa in childbirth.

I don't think that Elizabeth Blount changed Tudor History. Had her son with Henry VIII lived beyond his teen years, married and produced children; one of those children might have been used as a rallying point for those who opposed Mary I.

@@rebeccaorman1823 yes that is my thinking. She was Isabella's grand daughter. Isabella's brother died under mysterious circumstances. Her elder brother half brother, Enrico, may have killed him. Isabella was in house arrest. She escaped. She took out her half brother and rallied everyone around her. She married Ferdinand, but he was not king of Castile. If Mary had been more diplomatic, and married younger, I wonder if there could have been a united, stronger empire.

Thank you for a much deeper story than she is often represented by, my only niggle, and it is a niggle, is that the heroines of your videos are portrayed with flowing locks of loose hair in public places. Apart from the fact that it is really really historically inaccurate, it gives a hint that they are not respectable women. I know this would sound strange about a woman giving birth to an illegitimate child, but most women of that time would least have the appearance of respectability.
