Elizabeth you are a very knowledgeable person with good common sense. Thanks for hanging in there for the sake of our children's education despite all of the woke ideology and mindset of the political left that has hamstrung the education system in New Zealand for at least a decade. I appreciate your input. Please don't abandon ship now.

Michael thankyou for having Elizabeth Rata on the show.What a breath of fresh air. Keep up the good work. Ditch the ideological propaganda be it left,right,race theory. The educational curriculum must be provable and truthful based upon facts, geographical records. Lets get back to teaching out children how to annalise and think.
@davidburns69565 күн бұрын
Education in New Zealand has been subsumed by ideology. By critical race theory, DEI., decolonization and gender and personal identity. This is regressive and corrosive for young minds, implying both guilt and shame. Parents are terrified of the zealots in education and are trending to the right. We may point to the U.S. elections where an old white man (racist, misogynist, felon), won overwhelmingly against a young, black, female, left candidate. Drop the education teacher training colleges and apprentice teachers directly to schools and allow a true diversity of critical opinion, including conservatives, Christians and those not aligned to leftist radicalism.
@matthewdonoghue3214 күн бұрын
Very well said... except... Trump is neither racist, nor misogynist, and as for the felon one... he may have been convicted but nobody can name the crime he committed. Lets start with the first one... what has he said or done that is racist?

A friend of mine took her daughter to a school on the North Shore to preview it as her future intermediate school. The mother thought the school seemed ok. The daughter however came out the school and told her mother it seemed like the school would receive her better if she was gay or transgender. She was uncomfortable to go to the school as she did not identify with the forced and seeminlgy extreme identity politics the school pushed at the open day. It is sad that we are forcing this weird thinking on our kids. It’s a parent ideology and agenda we are forcing - the average child does not want it to cover their entire existence. Obviously we all accept gay people - but we don’t have to focus on it in every aspect of school life. Funny enough the kids are already open and accepting of homosexual and other minority identities the schools push so hard. The forcing is not really required.

It took me most of my lifetime to look back at the English reading curriculum to realize how every work was put forward to further social change before anything else. Death of a Salesman, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, Sylvia Plath. American social criticism. Never any focus on the heroic narrative. I look back on this stuff with contempt.

Paying top salary to teachers who get results. But the Unions won’t agree. So we are left with a number of teachers who shouldn’t be in front of a class. When I went to a secondary modern school 1957 to 1960 it was heads down and work hard. Looking back, despite the ravages of war, I think in those days in UK gave me a very solid grounding for the world ahead. I can still remember hundreds of times in class when not only did I learn something new, I knew how to apply it once I left. It has held me in good stead all these many years, and my thirst for knowledge has never wavered.
@davidburns69565 күн бұрын
Paying teachers according to being 'top' as you put it, is dependent on what is used to indicate success. Present high school education is about achieving a standard. In the humanities (English, history, philosophy etc.) the emphasis is on process rather than content. Thus the simplest route with the simplest material is used to achieve a pass. This gives the school good ratings and makes it look successful. But the content may exclude anything of any real complexity or critical, individual thought. Both Shakespeare and film are texts in this regard and one is certainly easier to teach and receive a pass than the other. So the simpler route is more successful given the system. In effect, you are rewarding teachers who teach mediocrity successfully. While those who extend and educate with more complex material risk being regarded as failures.

100% agree! My kids school- an affluent public school- are spending a lot of time and money (resources that should be put towards core content and teaching) integrating Maori and Maori cultural practices into all areas of rhe curriculum. It's nuts. NZ public schools should be culturally egoistic. I have no problem with my kids learning some Maori language in the context of a one hour Maori language class, but the constant push for integrating it theo7gh all areas of the curriculum is not what I signed up for.

The new govt has to quickly get on to amending the MOE requirements to public schools, one of which is giving effect to the Treaty. Beyond that MOE also mandates to schools to integrate Maori and Maori cultural practices into all areas of curriculum. These requirements provide cover to ineffective and ideological school leadership who want to ram Maori language and cultural practices into areas of kids learning where it has no business being. Teach the kids Maori language in the context of a single Maori language class, remove any cultural practice that is at odds with going to a public school, and lets get back to giving our kids a robust school experience where teachers are focused on the important stuff and not the spcial engineering going on currently.

I'm afraid Elizabeth is dreaming if she thinks teachers will be happy to adopt a 'direct teaching' approach after decades of indoctrination that inquiry learning and student-centred learning are the only way to teach. Many of them will also be seriously, and rightly, worried that they do not have the knowledge to actually teach children!! It will be a huge task to turn the ship around, but I hope they can do it!

As a high school teacher myself, a new teacher at that on the lowest income rank, eachers actually get paid a lot more than a huge amount of other skilled jobs - I started at 62K a year! More than I've earned before, and the pay goes up each year for a few years - to be fair I think teaching is a very tough job, but the pay is definitely enough to live well enough on. However, the struggle is that there are not true punishments for students who don't want to do any work or want to misbehave ignoring school rules, and young people are struggling with motivation because their phones make them think only now and next , not future purpose, and their families don't support them in thinking bigger and aiming high either. They're not grateful for education, they would rather be at home gaming, especially boys, there are only a few students in class who are actually pushing hard to learn, who work well in traditional school system and who have goals for their lives, max 3 students per class from my limited experience so far.

Kia ora Elizabeth, if Education is culturally loaded and has become heavily politicized over the last 30 years, and we must go back to a knowledge-based education (inquiry learning is actually dead in NZ schools) then why were you the most 'ideological' teacher that ever taught me? I don't regret what you offered- 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' was life changing, I could have done without your Joan Baez records, but I think Hone Tuwhare and Albert Wendt were in there AND you were the first teacher (ever) that greeted us with a 'Kia ora'. (pretty hip for the late 90's). I get it that people change BUT don't be an agent for the bigots that want to belittle others to fight their own cultural war. Your battle is pedagogy- their battle is people. After all, you were the person who read Sam Hunt's "'Beware the Man" poem to a class of young Polynesian men. The same young men who have gone on to build strong foundations for their communities and acknowledge the people who supported them to get there. You and I both know that naming the world is important- and the battle from the right is to keep the black hat on their own head. So- thank you for being the hip liberal trendy teacher that you were- you certainly socially transformed me and my mates- and I have NO regrets. P.S. Joan Baez still sux.
