Great instructional and the voice over is perfect. I am going to go back and try to find out how to get the silver inside the antler. 👍

Due to the amount of requests I’ve gotten for this ring I may consider redesigning it for more structural rigidity and reselling it in the future, KIT w/ my channel and I’ll announce it when I decide.

Two thoughts. 1. Seems like it would help to cover your ring mandrel with some plastic wrap to keep it from getting glue and/or rock dust covered. 2. Since the ring is already spinning on the mandrel couldn’t you just use sandpaper as opposed to the sanding drum on the rotary tool…cheaper. Nice video. Thanks.
@randysmithfabrications27312 жыл бұрын
I’ve since began using electrical tape on my mandrels. I use the dremel because I can get very rough grits and the rotation of the drum doubles it’s effectiveness turning against the rotation of my lathe without cranking up the speed. I usually only do this to knock down the larger clumps and then finish by hand.

Great video, got a lot of new and great ideas for my shop. ? Have you ever crushed antler to do inlay. Just to use uptrend small left overs ?
@randysmithfabrications27312 жыл бұрын
I have, but depending on what part of the antler you use you won’t see the matrix if it’s crushed. I’ve also used copper filings instead of wire so you don’t have a seam and it works great.
@AngelaKaySams4 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Could you put links to the epoxy and activator you use? Thanks!
@randysmithfabrications27314 жыл бұрын
Angela K. Sams I used LokTite CA glue and Bob Smith CA Accelerator.
@mikejohnston887210 ай бұрын
I would just use the antler and not the silver insert Beautiful ring. Have you ever used walnut or cherry saw dust with the ca glue?
@randysmithfabrications27319 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the antler is not strong enough to hold up on its own and even this ring with a 1 mm thick silver band eventually bent and broke. Now I make them with much stronger inner silver bands, so that they survive and last a long time. Yes I’ve used many different kinds of sawdust with CA glue, they make for a great insert.

Witch glue do you use? Is the activator necessary?
@randysmithfabrications27315 жыл бұрын

@@randysmithfabrications2731 thank you! Dont you have problems with the heat that came from the standing ? The copper keeps falling :(
@randysmithfabrications27315 жыл бұрын
rik3gs not with the sanding. It was overheating too much I suspect with the carbide bit, but I had better control over heat related issues that may have been causing the failures when sanding.
