And this is AFTERNOON TV! Dinah and Ella are in perfect harmony. Two great artists loving their time with each other. Lucky us.

The theme of this episode was "First Ladies Of Entertainment." The guests were Ella, Lucille Ball, Beverly Sills, and via remote Mrs. John Warner, Elizabeth Taylor, getting ready to head out for a dinner in Washington DC. There may have been another guest, maybe stage superstar Helen Hayes. But if not, this was plenty! In this medley Ella and Dinah are paying tribute to these great ladies of songs who, besides the first two, were contemporaries of theirs. Ella "Why Was I Born?" Helen Morgan Dinah "When You're Down And Out" Sophie Tucker Ella "Lover Man" Billie Holiday Dinah "I Got Rhythm" Ethel Merman Ella "Buttons & Bows" Dinah Shore Dinah "A-TIsket, A-Tasket" Ella Fitzgerald Ella "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" Mary Martin Dinah "Why Don't You Do Right?" Peggy Lee Ella "Hey There" Rosemary Clooney Dinah "Stormy Weather" Lena Horne Ella & Dinah "The Man That Got Away" Judy Garland

I feel this medley was very particular as it seems to be a tribute to the great ladies of song like Rosemary Clooney with “Hey There”, or Billie Holiday with “Loverman”, and even Ethel Merman with “I Got Rhythm”

Was the idea that they were singing songs the other was famous for? I know "A Tisket a Tasket" -- which Dinah sang here -- was one of Ella's signature songs. I don't know enough of Dinah's repertoire to know if Ella was doing the same thing with Dinah's songs. Either way, the two grand ladies sound awesome!

I think they were actual friends - their dual performances like this one sure look like it.

The theme for this episode was "First Ladies of Entertainment." I think this is the one where Dinah did a long-distance interview with Elizabeth Taylor in DC, while she was Mrs. John Warner.

@@coloraturaElise Thanks. 70s Ella was very appealing and warm

Ella's voice was definitely on the decline by this point (as it appears was Dinah's) but always nice to see the two of them together.
@timothyhughes19045 жыл бұрын
Of course, they were aging.

Ella's 70s Pablo recordings on Pablo were very appealing: warm, and more bluesy.

They got older. Maybe they smoked? Ella was also diabetic. Viva to them!

Yes we all have to age, even you! Ella’s voice even at this age is far superior to most singers 30 years younger. Nobody comes close and never will !

I disagree. Their voices over time grew deeper and richer, as do all musical instruments as they age. That is not "decline" You cant fake or imitate that in youth.
