Ella Purnell has delivered a masterclass in what it means for an actor to properly research and prepare for their role, as well as how to win over a fandom. I have 1,000 hours in Fallout games, and her preparation really shows in the way her performance merges perfectly with the existing world and lore. Impossible to fake. She left the vault and entered the wasteland and it shows. Walton Goggins approach is valid as well (helps with making the show connect with non-fans), as it seems he immersed himself in his character rather than the world, but it couldn't have worked if he wasn't surrounded by people like Ella, the writers, director, and producer who were immersed in the world.
@DmGray
@DmGray 4 ай бұрын
The major note on both approaches is humility. Neither one takes a tone of contempt for the franchise or its fans. We've had several years of media promotion leaning into outrage marketing. *intentionally* provoking anger and instigating division. I think that has stopped paying off (it absolutely can be a valid strategy. I just wish folks wouldn't pretend that wasn't the strategy :P)

I did not know about Goggins getting bitten by a brown recluse spider. Those are very nasty. I got bitten by a juvenile one and still lost a decent-sized chunk of flesh from my left hand near the base of my thumb. And by lost, I mean I could literally look down into the hole in my skin and see my thumb joint and the bone in my hand that connects to it. I do not recommend that, as it's fascinating for a second, then very distressing. Generally, when you can directly see your skeleton at all, nothing good is happening. Fortunately, with iodine and packing and repacking the wound as it healed, it healed up without a huge scar, although my thumb isn't as reliable as it used to be and I could put out a cigarette on that area and not feel it (muscle and skin grow back more readily than nerves). And he got bitten *FIVE* times because the damned thing was in his pants and (fair enough) very irritated when he put his pants on. Really, there isn't anything *in my pants* I'm comfortable having a spider put fangs into -- fortunately it was his leg, and very fortunately he went to the doctor immediately.

Ella captured the draw of Fallout to viewers: Emma (Lucy) is the new player, brimming with confidence in her selected abilities (her SPECIAL, to use a Fallout term), determined to be the good player in the Wasteland, not realising she will be wiped out in short order on her own. Walton (the Ghoul) is the player with five years play experience, every level up, every perk to increase his charisma and combat to be virtually invincible. And all that with an Attitude. Aaron (Maximus) is the archetypical low level soldier with low intelligence but really, really high perception and incredible luck. He makes a fantastic comedic character. Add to that all the Fallout tweaks, including second tier cast using game tropes such as the NPC walk, the PipBoy, the sounds from the game and that incredible score. I just loved it and am so hungry for Season 2.

Ella did an incredible job embodying the role of the Lone Survivor and as a fan of the game since the very first one, I was very impressed. I put the show off for a while after it came out but multiple friends on PlayStation told me what a good show it was and I was iffy about it because it is a video game adaptation and majority of them have sucked, and its Amazon, who have had a bad rep with originals for awhile. So I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the show and I was hooked from the first 5 minutes and finished season 1 in 2 days. I want more and I cannot WAIT to see season 2. The end of season 1 made me reinstall New Vegas and Fallout 4. This is a show that got the right people on board to make it, gave the source material the proper respect and attention, and executed everything perfectly. Lucy is an amazing Lone Survivor and with the mod on FO4 you can play as her, Maximus, or Cooper (pre-war). Maximus is a very different take on BOS squire and his entire story arc was very interesting. I think Aaron Moten did really fucking good as a character who joined the BOS through a great tragedy, and was seemingly indifferent about their ideals and I liked how he shit on Titus and let him die, took the armor, and it was very edge-of-your-seat seeing how things between him and the Brotherhood developed. Spoiler warning, the way he gets his knighthood is actually pretty genius and very Fallout. I loved watching the BOS rip the NCR a new one. Seeing all those knights in action was fuckin awesome. But Cooper blowing them up was even more badass. Ive always been a BOS guy. Every game Ive joined them where its possible, and in NV I hated the NCR lol. It really comes down to that ending where Liberty Prime just wreaks havoc on every enemy of the BOS lol. So awesome. And Walton Goggins. Oh man. He is a legendary actor in and of himself, before the show. And his character, Cooper Howard, was just fucking awesome. The makeup department deserve a huge raise cause never did I imagine a ghoul not being CGId in. How Walton managed to do what he did in all that makeup is mindblowing and he is just that much more legendary. I cannot wait to see him and Lucy in New Vegas sticking it to Vault-Tecs ass. Hopefully soon Todd Howard gives us an update.

This cast is great the fact they don't know Abt fallout but know that they want to make the best product for the fans that's awesome. I'm a decent way through fallout 4 and can def see the inspiration for the story in the game . Love it and became one of my favorite games. Can't wait to play New Vegas and for season 2 !

I am 50. I lived through being one of the weirdos playing Computer Games, to it becoming a major mainstream Business and Games being adapted into Movies and TV Shows... Quite a ride. 😅

OMG, creators who "want to do the story justice." These are the heros we need AND deserve.

Her character in the beginning had just the right mix of naive, wide-eyed idealism and sceptical curiosity for somebody who has lived a fairly sheltered life before she ventures out of the Vault, and it's amazing to see how the wasteland starts to change her into, as the Enclave scientist puts it, "a different animal".

I didn't know the actress, at the beginning of the series I wondered if the eyes had been enlarged in CGI. Anyway, gorgeous character

Ella demonstrates JUST how easy it is to approach franchises with immense, established and passionate fanbases. You don't need to be a superfan. You don't need to PRETEND to be a super fan. Just "I tried it, here's some stuff I appreciate, and I really want to do justice to the source material" Walton Goggins took a different tack of just being honest. He knew nothing about the franchise and simply did his job. I'm hoping that industry PR and individual actors just take notice. A touch of humility is all you need. A touch of fan service/appreciation will gain you huge credit. Perhaps it will end the narrative that fandoms are toxic, and simply demonstrate that antagonism towards fans is the main problem. Not the fans reaction to being antagonised.

She really delivers that naive vault dweller feeling. Her characters adaptation throughout the season was spot on. I can't wait for more.

@jeffreypierson2064 I know. She was told to act like Ned Flanders, though, which is a main inspiration for her character. It's literally the first thing they talk about in the video.

This Fallout Season 1 shows and proves if you write a proper script and develop characters properly you will probably get a hit. Love the OH to Fallout in some spots but also made it there own. All three main characters do a great job, and Lucy (Ella Purnell) is my favorite at this time.

"The Ghoul" in the show is actually easier on the eyes than a lot of the non-ferals from the game.....the show runners absolutely could have gone farther with the aesthetics.

See her interview on The Tonight Show where she admits she has absolutely NO idea what, “Ned Flanders in an apocalypse” means. And that her producers have just TOLD her to not worry about it, but to just go around saying that. As, she has never seen The Simpsons nor ever even played Fallout before filming.
