WoW! WoW! WoW! As SOON as I seen the FRONT of this building, memories from 1968 POPPED into my worn out brain!!! In July 1968, my Dad, Mom, my two brothers, and myself loaded up in our 1962 Ford Galaxy 500 in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, and headed West on Route 66 to Weldon California!!! And YES!!!!!! We DID most certainly STOP here to hunt for Tourist Treasures!!! I purchased a Life Like Rubber Snake for $1!!! And I scared everybody I could with it UNTIL it got it's head got chopped off!!! It was that real looking!!! LOL We visited my Uncle and Aunt who lived at Weldon, which is just East of Lake Isabella! In 1972 we made a return trip, back to Weldon, with my Dad, Mom, Little Brother, Uncle, and Grandmother and me! However I do NOT remember stopping here on that trip!!! I wish we would have!!! Such GRET memories!!!! Thanks for reminding me Hoss!!! LOVE IT!!!!

Hey, Dan, Since you seem concerned about rattlesnakes I will tell you what my Daddy taught me. He was bitten by a rattlesnake when he was about 12 , for which he took total responsibility. He jumped over a fence without checking the other side and landed on a snake. He felt the snake acted in self defense. First you don't stupidly stick you hands anywhere you can't see, like in holes, found bags, tops of rocks, etc. Second, a snake doesn't want to see you anymore than you want to see it. While a snake might bite you; most usually in a confrontation between a person and a snake the snake ends up broken and bloody or covered in gasoline. (My sympathies are with the snake.) So, you make noise. When you walk in woods or brush hit a tree with a stick, talk loudly; if it can move away from you, it will. I am old now and my Daddy is dead, old age, not snakebite. I have walked in many woods and through much brush and have never in my life seen a snake in the wild. Also, rattlesnakes, maybe all snakes, I don't know; cannot adjust their body temperature. They rely on conditions around them to maintain their temperature at a livable level. So when it's hot, which it frequently is where they live, they do seek out abandoned buildings, garages, under rocks, in order to cool off. If it is cold, they might lay on top of rocks or paving which holds the sun's heat for awhile. They are not monsters and they are trying to do exactly what we are trying to do, stay alive.

I encountered a snake once. A lawnmower's motor should have made enough noise to warn it. Maybe it was deaf.

Hey Dan if you're ever in the Shartlesville PA area you gotta check out Roadside America. It's not abandoned by any means but it is almost a hundred years old and full of campy Americana. The main attraction is the large miniature village and model trains they have set up inside. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

footage is awesome. absolutely love the blue sky.. I really love these videos out west. If you ever get interested Come to St. Louis, a lot of history here. I could send you or show you enough to keep you busy for days. It's similar in ways to your home city Baltimore. A lot of abandoned row houses, victorian houses, theatres, factories, schools. It's all stuff built turn of the century through the 20's...

Hey Dan? I remember mosquito netting made into a cap that drapes over your head and neck like a veil and another one made into a shirt and I think pants that are worn over the top of clothes which are a cheap green mosquito netting... could that help keep bees from stinging while allowing circulation of air through the mesh? Also, maybe you could each carry a can of Cedar Spray insecticide, I can get a brand name for you, to spray on one another if you should ever encounter them again?

The abandonment of the mother road is a rather sad story in American History. I am in IL and live rather close to what use to be Route 66, it had been taken over by several other highways once I55, I64, and I70 came through the area. Parts of IL111, 140, 143, 157, 159, and Route 4 use to be Route 66. Very few of the road-side attractions and mom-and-pops survived, especially if they where no where near an interstate exit.

One downside from the construction of Interstate and other modern highways was the death of roadside Americana. Perhaps none worse than former (!) Route 66 that in some cases left entire towns without their primary income.
