i´m pretty convinced that they didn´t go to the graves in (many) of the pagan cultures (originally). the real question is more whether the ancestor cult was at home or in a nearby wilderness area (probably both). i think it´s because it was separate for the male and female (they were from different families / clans). here the female cult was usually at home (although they had tree shrines further on too) and the male cult either behind the tent or in the forest (the whole living area was divided by gender). it´s the Tree you see, that was the link to the other world! (trees being much older than human build shrines, up north it changes from trees to rocks and mountains) in river cultures here the ancestor shrine was upriver and the graves were downriver (obviously two soul concept there, with water being the link). it´s all about the souls (you must understand them before you can understand the burial customs). me i actually go around dead bodies (animals) i don´t go up close sniffing them (maybe i´m just normal). :)

what i meant was that the tree / water was the link to the person´s Family´s otherworld. (there were no general otherworlds here) for example if they were living with the spouse´s family, that was their link to back home :) (of course they had brought with them many other things too, like idols, jewellery) it´s complicated but not (idols have been replaced by photographs on the wall, otherwise same).

one more thought :) burying might not be the original custom, because the sami people, after a death they moved the tent to another location! leaving the dead where they died might be the original custom, at least for hunter-gatherers (or burying them to where they died, it´s the same idea as with the place of birth). certainly they left behind those who died in battles, or drowned, just like dead animals are left where they are. real respect of the dead you know, as opposed to covering and hiding the dead. same thing with names, they never used the real (ancestral) names, but instead used the nick names.. see how that one has also been turned around, people introducing themselves with the names of the ancestors, it makes me cringe! that said, witches most likely did go to the graves, because of course they did, they just cleaned themselves with smoke and other methods (again same thing that was done after birth, it was like contamination, they avoided that shit).

I used the apple voice memos app and then remove the original audio of the video as you can barely hear anything and replace it with the voice recording
