She could be if her colour theory was correct it is cool tones that look darker then they are because cool tone absorb light where as warm tones reflect light that’s why a blue black will always look darker then a flat black or warm black

This really helped simplify my already existing knowledge on lightening, which comes only from trial and error experience with my own hair. Sometimes it's great to hear someone else explain the thoughts in your head. Now it'll be much easier for me to have a concrete explanation when someone I know asks me for advice on what to use. Rather than just saying that a toner isn't going to work to strip someone's hair I will actually be able to explain why in a way that they will understand

Actually, the truth is that Warm Tones reflect the light and make colours seem lighter brighter and Ash Tones absorb the light (used to potentially neutralise unwanted warm tones in the hair) and can make colours seem deeper and darker without changing the base level of course. Permanent colours permanently change the natural Eumelanin and Pheomelanin colour molecules in the Cortex of the hair and insert Artificial Pigment molecules. Permanent Colours cannot lift out other Permanent Colours. Permanent colours are mixed with an oxidant, 10vol, 20vol, 30vol, 40vol depending on how many levels of lift you require. Bleach when mixed with a developer of your choice- depending on the lift you desire- will start a process in the hair called decolourisation. This is when the bleach lifts out the natural or artificial pigment in the hair revealing the natural remaining pigments (NRP) as it lifts up the base levels and decolourises. Oxidants when using bleach can vary depending on whether you're performing a Colour Change (Colour Correction), Full Head Bleach, Highlights, etc. High Lift Tint is in-between a Permanent Tint and Bleach. Bleach is of course stronger like you said. It works especially good when using it when executing highlights on someone with a base level 6 and higher, but can also be used on virgin hair brunettes for those warm caramel, honey, toffee tones.. Usually mixed with 30vol and 40vol. Breaking the rules a little bit but can also be used to tone full head bleaches with to kick out any remaining pale yellow. High Lift + 20vol + tone! Might sting a little but worth it! You're welcome from London! 😘

thank you!! 1 question though: So as far as I understood NRP is just the pigments left after bleaching. That means that if you fully bleach the hair, there are no remaining pigments and the hair is white right? Because I'm confused what the "brassy" colors mean which are mentioned everywhere. Is it basically the remaining (in this case orange/blonde) pigments that can be bleached out, but people rather use a blue toner often to counter the pigmentation and to get white hair. And they do it instead of more bleaching because it's less damaging for the hair?? Because i thought if you have blonde/orangey/brassy hair, you might just want to bleach more and then color the hair.

I've been watching all of your videos and you are so informative. My stylist fired me a couple of weeks ago because I was unhappy with the way she colored my hair. She had been doing it for over a year and always did a great job, We were experimenting with different Pravana colors but because it takes 45min under a dryer to lift my hair and she was in a time jam she told me that she was not going to lift my hair past the level it turns orange(I forget what level that is) plus she foiled it and left a ton of my natural grown out color which is dark brown to add the Pravana violet and the pink to. I looked like a rainbow and ask her to fix it and that was the end. I should say that I have a very short cut with an undercut, (which I let her trial and error on cuz it grows so quick, it was long) so I've decided to tackle it myself. I am going to try the Olaplaex when I lift. But I just wanted to thank you for your awesome videos, you have a great voice for educating and a great expressive face. Wish you were in Oklahoma

Thank you 4 explaining the difference between these things. Ever since I got my hair bleached a month & half ago, the stylist I WAS going 2, plus a bunch of other KZbinrs who bleach their own hair have been throwing the word "toner" around as if it were synonymous/interchangeable with regular hair dye, so I KIND of understood why it was, but @ the same time --- NOT REALLY. That's what happens when you get a lot of people who don't know what they're talking about, repeating & disseminating what a bunch of other people, who also don't know what they're talking about, are saying. Even my last stylist was vague about explaining how toner & dye were different. The only thing I knew 4 sure was that toner doesn't have any lifting power, but just affected undertones when deposited. AnTwayz . . . I was wondering . . . I've already had my hair bleached and toned 2x in the last month and a half, and he still didn't give me an even color. Well, the 1st time, he just toned it the wrong color --- plus he apparently didn't lift me evenly around the perimeter (sides and lower back) of my hair. So when he applied the toner, the color was also uneven. So that same day of the 1st bleaching, he went back in and applied a different shade of toner over the 1st toner he had just applied a few minutes ago to correct it. It looked a lil' better in terms of the shade, BUT it still wasn't the color I showed him ---- even though I showed him SEVERAL pictures from online of the color I wanted. So, I had to wait another week before I could come back and he could correct it, which required bleaching my entire head again for 45 minutes. My hair lifted back to a somewhat platinum color, but still had blotches of yellow 🟡, which I couldn't see that well inside the shop because of the particular lighting he had. I saw some yellow, that at the time looked faint-ish & I even suggested to him that he re-apply a fresh batch of bleach and let it sit on my head a lil' longer to break through the yellow, but again, he insisted the toner would fix it. When he finished, the shade of toner he used was much closer to what I wanted and I thought it was fine. * Now, I must stop 🛑 here & mention that I am black & have NATURAL 👨🏾🦱 4C(the kinkiest curl pattern)/with a lil' 4B (the 2nd kinkiest) on the top around my crown & what would be considered by "bang" area were it straight. So my hair takes about a good 2 or 3 hours to dry being it is VERY porous, and wet 🧖🏾♀️hair of any ethnicity looks like a different color wet 💦 opposed 2 when it's dry. Plus, my curl pattern was blown out & as a result, my hair was puffier than normal from the bleach further opening up the cuticle. At the time, I didn't know that hair looks lighter the straighter or looser the curl pattern as opposed to when the curl pattern is tighter* And said ALL that 2 say, it looked like the color I wanted due 2 those reasons I just mentioned above 👆🏾. About the 2nd day after the bleaching coloring process, I noticed how my hair was darker around the perimeter than the top of my head. As I learned shortly after, the fact thaty curl pattern on the side started returning to normal somewhat, & it is kinkier than that on top of my head, it looked darker. I combed i out to where it was somewhat straight & it did look lighter in that state, then got darker again as the 💦 I sprayed in it 2 help detangler it started drying & the curls started coming back about 2 hours later. But the top of my head where my curl pattern is somewhat looser was mostly bright without manipulation except for my bang area which was still darker than the rest of my hair on the top, despite already being straight. That's how I knew that my curl pattern was only PART 2 blame 4 my hair appearing darker on some areas over others. He simply didn't lift my hair 2 one even color --- AGAIN 🤨 --- b4 applying the toner. The base color (or lack thereof) wasn't even after the second bleaching, so when he applied the toner, it followed suit and didn't take evenly. So my concern is that me having already having had my hair bleached 2x & toned 3x on a month, & what lil' curl pattern I had on the top of my head being decimated from those processes, should I even try to bleach my entire head again to see if I can finally get an even lift from the bleach so the toner takes evenly this time or should I just learn to deal with what I have? It doesn't look bad, but I can tell it's uneven, and that bothers me. HOWEVER, if it's a choice between keeping my hair on my head or having to chop a lot of it off just to have the color I want, I'll choose the health of my hair. Now, DID do a homemade protein treatment with natural ingredients a few days after the second bleaching. Then 2wks. later, I did the Aphogee 2-Step Protein Treatment to help heal my hair. As well as deep conditioning treatments after ea. one. I'm also keeping it moisturized with creams & oils in-between washings 🧖🏾♀️. The sides of my hair look normal for the most part when dry, as does the top.i do notice a few pieces standing up/flyaways here and their, but nothing serious. But when wet ----- even just from stepping outside 4 a few seconds & the humidity absorbing into my hair (I live in FL 🥵), my hair all over gets EXTREMELY soft, and downright mushy on the top. But when it dries, it feels mostly normal. Should I try to bleach it again (my appointment with a new stylists is in 4 weeks ---- so 8wks out from the last/2nd bleaching) 2 ensure I gave my best effort to get the stubborn yellow that's causing the eneven color out? Or should I just have the stylist use a hi-lift color?? Or should I do a bleach bath which way more diluted than the 1st 2 options?? As I said, the health of my hair is my priority ---- especially given it's natural state (sans what the bleach did to it) & is extra porous. P.S. ---- The new stylist I'm going to in a few weeks told me during my consultation that if I'm using natural oils on my hair that aren't clear, then they could also contribute to the darkening of my hair (and, YES --- I am using a purple 🟣 conditioner mixed with my usual conditioner when I wash my hair) --- is that true?? I don't know of any oils (aside from refined versions) that are naturally clear/white except 4 coconut oil. Argan oil (if unrefined), at its lightest still has a slight tinge of yellow, & some varieties are straight up yellow. But all the other oils and butters are naturally some shade of yellow or green or brown. And me being black 👨🏾🦱 with 4C hair, all the oils I need for sealing in moisture and slip are everything BUT coconut 🥥 oil!! I really only like to use 🥥 oil as a prepoo to help with protein loss due to the bleaching, but otherwise, argan, avocado 🥑, & olive oil are best for my hair, along with Shea & Cocoa butter. Aside from pre-poos, I only like to use coconut 🥥 oil mixed in small amounts with other butters or in this one natural hairspray I use. I don't see how these other oils would stain my hair cuz if the toner is filling up the empty spaces left after the bleach took out the natural color of my hair, what would the colors of the oils have to keep them in place? Plus, people whose hair is naturally blonde or turns platinum white as part of naturally turning grey from aging ---I'm sure they use opaque oils & butters and their hair doesn't turn. I don't like using mostly synthetic hair products (or products on general) which is why I make my own or use raw, unrefined oils. Plus, they contain the most nutrients, i.e, benefits. If this is true that they do stain, then maybe I will have to go back 2 a darker blonde closer to the shade I was after the 1st bleaching/toning, though the shade I am now is best for hiding grey's ---- the entire reason I went blonde on the 1st place. P.S. ---- disregard the lines through a lot of the text in the last paragraph. I don't know why KZbin did that, but everything that's crossed out I did & STILL do intend 2B included with the rest of my mini dissertation.

@@annascott3542 🤣. That's the story of my life --- putting tins of energy into something & getting N🚫THING 4 it!! But I didn't really expect 2 get 1 given the size of her platform. I'm pretty sure she's swamped with messages she can never possibly get to. Anyhoo . . . I BEEN bleaches my hair months ago, had a bad reaction --- which is weird given I've done it several times in the past without incident in that regard --- and had to chop it off cuz I couldn't risk another reaction when it came time to touch up my roots, so OFF ✂️ 👱🏾♂️it has 2 go 💥🦵🏾!! It was cute for the 3 or 4 months I has it though 🤷🏾♂️. But trying to dye it back to my natural color was a nightmare 😱! Usually, I don't dye my own hair, though I have on a few occasions in the past when my hair was super short already, I didn't plan on keeping the color long & I didn't mind cutting it off & starting over in 2 or 3 months. OR when I couldn't find a hair dresser I trusted. In THIS case, I was gonna have the stylist who bleached it dye it back black 👦🏿. And although you would think black would be a simple enough color that 1 could dye on their own @ home, I didn't want to end up with wonky undertones which can give an off-black. Well . . . as my (bad) luck would have it, my stylist got sick either the day of or the day b4 my appointment, I was told by the person on the phone she would call me to reschedule. 2 months later & I hadn't received a call --- I hope 🙏🏾 the woman is still alive --- and my hair was looking a mess so I went to Sally's got some black dye (and N😤 --- IT WASN'T OF CHEAP QUALITY --- not basedon the price 🤲🏾💵 anyway) & the f🖕🏾ckery 🙄🤦🏾♂️ began. For whatever reason, the color looked like it took when I finished applying it & was letting it process, but when I rinsed it out of my hair, it left violet undertones --- which wasn't necessarily a bad thing (It actually was kind of cute), But the second time I washed it, the violet faded and let some red --- which I didn't like. So I waited about 5 more days, re-dyed it --- SAME THING 😡🔥. So, I just went to the barber, got most of my hair cut off & got a short mohawk which I am growing our. I like it, but at the time, I was VERY miffed cuz that was the 2nd time I'd lost almost a years worth of growth to a botched hair process that wasn't my fault. But SUCH IS LIFE 😑. Anyway . . . thanks for the compliment about my writing ✍️🏾. I've been hearing that since 6th grade. Unfortunately, since I don't have a degree 👨🏾🎓 in 📃 it & no professionally published work, no one will hire me to do it (believe me ---- I've tried). And to make matters worse, I don't have the $ for a computer right now (or a car), so my ambition of writing a novel (or anything else) are on hold INDEFINITELY. But thanks 😊 4 noticing!!

Bleach (Lightener) is NECESSARY to lighten hair to achieve the pale blonde shades (Level 10) even if your hair is naturally blonde because of the way the melanin pigments work in your hair. High Lift Blondes work for shade levels 5 (Light Brown) through 9 (Light Blonde) to achieve light to very light blonde but SELDOM do they get you to platinum, AGAIN, because of the way the melanin pigments work in your hair. If your hair is Levels 1 (Black) through 4 (Medium Brown) you will need to 'Pre-Lighten' before using a High Lift Tint OR simply 'Bleach & Tone'. TONERS are NON-LIFTING Tints in a pale shade, even if mixed with Peroxide or Developer their lifting power is too small to make much of an impact and is basically a side-effect of the development process OR a means to 'Level Out' hair that is slightly uneven, generally they can lighten about one Level if it is the Basic Creme Type Toner with 20 Vol. Peroxide (Clairol CREME Toner / WELLA Color Charm / L'Oreal Excellence Toner). Color Rinses, Semi-Permanent and Demi-Permanent colors can be used as toners on Fragile, Damaged, Bleached Hair to minimize any further damage and help to correct hair.

First - I have never heard of anything called "highlift"; is that something more in a drugstore box color, or am I completely missing a whole section at Sally Beauty? Second, maybe you can talk more about toners specifically (when to use, comparison with color)? Third, can you clarify the role of developer (I am under the impression you use developer for everything permanent, as it opens the cuticle for you to either bleach or deposit color?) Thx again and I look forward to answers to these questions!

My hair is blond but with an orange stitch, which I do not like. I use now farnolo "no yellow" but that helps but you have to constantly use and the color changes depending on whether you use the shampoo more often or less often. Now I want to bleach my hair. Can you recommend a bleacher and a tone, that is not extremely expensive. and should I use olaplex? I appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

@brenten62267 жыл бұрын
Awesome video, as always :), thanks for sharing it. I have a couple of questions regarding issues that I'm having. I am a new platinum blonde, and have always been dark headed, but since my natural roots are now white/silver/gray I decided to lighten all my hair, use toners, purple shampoos, etc. to help blend my hair with my natural roots, so I'm not having to constantly dye my roots to keep the gray from showing. So all this blonde stuff is completely new to me, and lol as of right now this blonde is NOT having more fun. I achieved the platinum blonde at home, over several months, by using color removers to remove all the old color on my hair, and by using bleach and developer twice - that I always mixed with Olaplex :). The lower part of the back of my hair has some old box dye staining on it that is proving to be a royal pain to get rid of. I have tried 2 additional bleach baths being left on for 10 mins, and the other for about 20 mins- (again using Olaplex in my bleach mixture) to remove it, but although much, much, lighter now (about a level 8-9), it is still there. I've tried toning a couple of times, and that area always looks darker, or doesn't tone at all if I'm using a lighter toner. I, however, also have an issue with the toners when I use them too. The amount of processing over time to achieve platinum has made my hair very porous so the toners have a tendency to make my hair have those hideous light blue, and greenish tones when using an ash based toner. I just recently used a gray toner mask because my hair doesn't look good just left at the platinum blonde color, but of course, the gray looked blue/green so I used clarifying shampoo several times to remove most of it from my hair, but now what's left is the color of mud lol. As far as the box dye staining, and my hair being so porous already I really don't want to bleach it again right now, even if I do have Olaplex. Right now my hair appears in relatively good condition, with very little damage, and I'm afraid if I keep messing with it trying to eliminate that stain that that could change rather quickly. My questions are: Is there anything I can use or do to get my hair to not be as porous, so that when I put a toner on, it tones my hair to a more desirable color, lol minus the blue and green color? or do I just have to wait it out an let my hair repair itself over time? Is there any semi or demi permanent colors that might work better on my hair because as of right now I'm about ready to throw a box of permanent color back on it, and call it done but I'm afraid I'll end up permanently colored blue/green lol. Also is there anything else I can do to eliminate that box dye staining? (I'm curious if one of the high lift blonde colors might help on it?) I know in time it will eventually be cut out of my hair with routine hair cuts, but for now it's kind of a pain because it forces me to have to tone darker than I had planned in order to cover it up, which is actually defeating my purpose of bleaching my hair blonde to start with, PLUS lol it then that just makes for a darker shade of the lovely blue/green tones in my hair too. (I've not left my purple shampoo on for any extended amount of time, but I'm sure if I did, my hair would be a lovely shade of purple too. Is there any way to get the rest of the gray dye out other than bleaching, or another color remover? (LOL blue, green, purple, or mud colored hair at 53 years old was not my plan, but ole grandma here has been rockin those colors pretty good so far). Any suggestions you have to help these issues would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and have a wonderful day!!!

I'm a natural level 3 so I need quite a bit of lift. Ever 5 weeks my hairdresser usually puts a high lift colour (40 vol and olaplex) on the roots and then either a half head or full head of highlights (with olaplex) as well which gives me a great result, but my roots are always a bit on the orange side (because there is such a big lift). I bought purple shampoo and it tones the blonde in my hair like a charm making it really ashy, but it doesn't affect my orange roots. Do you have any advice on this? THANK YOU

I'm not a professional but I've done my own hair platinum for about 6 years now & it sounds to me like your roots just aren't lifted high enough if they haven't gone past the orange stage. It has to b at least like INSIDE-a-banana-peel yellow to tone & make ashy like the rest of your hair. Hope this helps!

Then you would probably need a color to break the base. In that case you'd have to have your stylist melt in a darker color on your roots into the platinum so it looks natural without having a line of demarcation. And when I say darker, I don't mean it has to b like a level 5 or 6. But if u want the base to b more natural vs. platinum & then fade to platinum, that's what you would have to do. Because if you're putting bleach all over, & the roots are still orange, that's not what u want if u want the base darker. U can however add the color over it, but I would suggest just adding the base breaker to begin with instead of applying bleach to the scalp if that's the look you're going for. I hope this helped. My explanation was kinda all over. Lol

I have jet black hair. I trusted the "toner will not make your hair lighter". 30 min of toning my whole head with Pale ash blonde T14 (wella) later, my whole head is lightened............ruined my black to blonde ombre.

So if I bleach my hair it will lift to the highest Point, if I just use color It will lift to certain levels and if I use a toner on my hair it will tone it down to make it look less brassy or gold which ever I’m going for? If I bleach it, I use color or toner to get the actual color I’m looking for? I love your videos, I’ve learned so much. My plan is to bleach my hair and then tone to get an ash blonde look vs a bright blonde. Thanks for your videos!

Hi.. been bleaching my hair for yrs. I normally use Wella T18 to tone & in between I either use manic panic toner & purple shampoo. BUT it always ends up turning dull ..grey after awhile... where as I just want that brightness that it is right after I bleach.... (like Gwen Stefani color hair) 😊 My question.. can I use like a Color Brilliance high lift ash blonde as a toner? I really want to avoid that dull look.

Can you do an update on high lifts?
@olliehill18797 жыл бұрын
Hi Silvia, which between bleach and high lift colour, do you feel is less damaging to hair? I am naturally a level 7 medium blonde, and every 8-10 weeks I have bleach highlights with a 10 developer, which brings me up to a level 9/10 in the highlighted areas (especially on the ends). my hair is slowly getting shorter despite regular cuts and l not using heat on my hair- I use bendy rollers for my hair. do you think high lift colour would achieve the same/ similar results? Do you feel in your experience that high lift colour creates less damage?

Hi I've only just across your vlog which i love been watching all your videos on hair. I wish you lived near me as i would for sure come to you. For some reason my hairdresser knows hardly anything when it comes to colour she obviously knows the basics but she doesn't get why when she's lifting my hair it always turns brassy blonde. She then seems to think it needs to be lifted more with bleach -by the way my hair is blonde my roots are probably a medium brown i think is that a 7 - yet what iv already learnt from you is that to combat that youd put a demi colour on it to lift it without peroxide. Anyway my question to you if you have the time to answer is I want to go rose gold and i understand the only way to get there is with a toner do you know any other way to achieve that colour which would be more permanent! many thanks Louise x

I know this is an older video but I thought I would ask a question anyway. - I am a relatively new blonde. I had my thick virgin dark brown long (down to my bellybutton) hair first bleached in March of this year. I did it while visiting an out of town friend at an over priced salon in a big city. I payed $250 which was $50 more than I expected, but I still made sure I gave my hair dresser a fat tip because she got me lighter than I thought was possible in my first bleaching. Anyway, when it came to finding a place to have my roots done and future further lightening close to home, I chose a cosmetology school's salon (Brown Aveda Institute) that another friend of mine had graduated from. First for selfish economical reasons since they only change me $40 to have my roots done, but also help the students learn on the head of client like myself who isn't going to give them shit and make them feel nervous. In June of this year I had my second lightening done by them, and am now at about your hair color. However my goal is to be platinum/white. My question is, is this possible and how many more full hair bleachings do I need? Also, I currently use Clairol Shimmer Lights Blonde and Silver shampoo and conditioner twice a week. The color of the shampoo and conditioner is a purplish blue, which on the color wheel cancels out orangey tones but not really the yellow ones. When I achieve a platinum/white color will I need to use more of a blue shampoo and conditioner, and if so can you recommend an affordable one? I never ask my hair dressers because I know that they are obligated to promote the products they sell at that salon, rather than the product that will work best and I can buy in bulk on Amazon.
@Ajbaker20197 жыл бұрын
I just realized I got the purple vs blue shampoo and what colors they cancel out mixed up. So never mind about that question. ha ha
@SeanBrown235 жыл бұрын
So, purple shampoo is just too preserve the blonde hair color? Could you use semi-permanent hair color to tone your hair? I do right now, and when I do there's often some residual color left behind; but I find that this is the case with purple shampoo as well.

Same here. I bleach my roots and I don't want to use bleach anymore but I feel like I won't get the same bright blonde without it. I'm not sure what else to use. My natural hair color is a light brownish dirty dishwater blonde.

My hair is dark brown/black from box hair dye. I want to go back to a lighter shade (not blonde) as I'm tired of the harshness dark hair brings. I'm going to be bleaching my hair with a packet of lightning bleach I got from Sally's years ago. My plan is to bleach my hair (not all of it) then apply a light ash brown over it. My question is do I still need to tone my hair after bleaching it? I don't want any brass or orange and I know toning takes care of brass. But since I'm not going blonde and applying color over it do I need the toner? If you could please let me know I'd greatly appreciate it ☺️

Hi! Im wondering if you can answer a question for me:) Last Wed I went to a solon to take my balyage up and refresh it. The gentleman bleached and toned my hair but left it patchy and orange. He told me I would need Anothet toner so I went back today and received a very dark toner on my just lightened hair . Now I'm scheduled for a second bleach to fix the patches on Friday but im worried its too soon after the other bleach and the toner today. My hair doesn't feel super damaged but it does feel alot less thick than it was.
