So if I have a red tint to my brown hair I would use a green toner?

@@cathiefaith1434 I’m afraid it’s not quite that straight forward when it comes to Green cancelling out red…but yes, that’s the principle. Keeping in mind green is a VERY powerful tone.

Thank you soooo much for this video! I haven’t worked professionally for decades but your video has proven that I still know my colour science! I thought it may have changed so much that my years of hairdressing is redundant. I love shades EQ I use it on my own hair in between salon visits but I don’t colour clients anymore as I don’t have the facilities. I have a daughter who is getting married in 4 weeks and needs a colour correction. Her hair is long ( below shoulder length) she just had a full head of foils on her level 5 virgin hair which have been lifted to a level 8 1/2 - 9 then toned with a copper (not by me). It’s a bit too light and patchy. The foils are good the toner is not so good. She wants the end result to be a deep auburn base 5 with bright copper highlights. At the moment the foils are too close the roots and look a bit weird. She has asked me to correct it because she’s scared to go back to the stylist in case it all goes wrong so close to her wedding. I thought a root smudge with 05WG 06WN 1/2 & 1/2 then an 08C through the mid lengths to ends would achieve the result she wants. Her hair is fine textured but tonnes of it and it does throw a lot of gold naturally. Do you think that formulation will achieve the correct result? I hope all that makes sense and thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Cheers Leanne
@theworldofcraig
@theworldofcraig 5 ай бұрын
Hi Leanne, you’re most welcome, thanks for watching. It’s impossible for my to be specific remotely but I would suggest an NB on the root - the NB’s are more pigmented, it should do the job without adding/canceling. The C series is quite bright as they have no tan/brown in them, perhaps add a little 7G…? Good luck and enjoy the wedding! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

I have golden blonde color. I color myself once a month with Igora 12.19 high lift so I lift from 6 to 9. I don't know what happened to new formula of Igora but it used to tone me in one step but hasn't done so after re-formulation. I do my own toning mask with 2 direct dyes - blue and violet. It helps some but I'm still not getting the same result as a real toner (I like pearl tone or owl-like color, which is just neutral color). I used to use Wella T14 but it's too damaging (and I have very thin waist long hair, and after finally growing it out for 5 years, I don't wanna damage it again). I choose gentle approach because I went through a black to blonde transformation which took me through hell. A lot of breakage caused me PTSD. I don't care for having a bright blonde color - in an ideal world I wish I could do a highlights throughout my hair but leave the rest of the hair medium ash blonde. But I don't know how to highlight and honestly I will never DYI my own hair again. 😅

I absolutely love your channel and need your advice. You are so knowledgeable and kind to share your wisdom. Is it absolutely necessary to have a toner put on my hair? My natural hair color is dishwater blonde with gray. I have used bleach since I was 12. My hair perks right up to a beautiful golden blonde and has plenty depth and shading with no toner . I recently moved and the hairdressers here insist on toning my hair no matter how l protest. My hair has turned gray, gray-green, and gray-purple. No one here understands I do not desire to be a purple haired old lady. I do not wish to use purple shampoo or anything purple on my hair because it turns my golden locks lavendar. I 16:14 do not want to be ash blonde or any cool color. One time the shampoo girl snuck toner on me and thought I wouldn’t notice. They all insist on adding color instead of just bleaching as I ask. Is it 100% necessary to use a toner? I would like to learn to bleach my own hair. One more question. I do not believe I should have to pay for purple, gray, or green hair. These hairdressers have the nerve to demand hundreds of dollars with no regard for my wishes. Do you make your clients pay for a hair do they are vocally unhappy about? All the other hairdressers kept tying to convince me my hair was not green. It was like bullying. It was gray with green streaks . Then they began blaming it on the lighting in the salon. The same thing happened at the next salon except it was purple and cost $400. I was made to feel ashamed for insisting on the golden blonde hair which we agreed upon prior to service.

Hi, I love your detailed videos! Thank you for empowering the at home colorist! My hair is a level 6/7 base with level 8 highlights. My base is very orange. My question is, how can I tone my base without covering and darkening my highlights? If I use a 6BV, will it also darken my level 8 highlights to a level 6? Is there a specific formula you may recommend? Thank you!

Hi there, thanks for watching, glad you’re enjoying my videos. I’m afraid you can’t have one without the other in this instance and you need to perhaps compromise and find a formula middle ground - if you want a cooler/neutral result it’s always going to be darker. There are a few other videos that go into it here on my channel.

Hi there, thanks for watching and for your fab question. So (if I remember correctly, I make a lot of content!) I’m taking about getting maximum deposit in that part of the video - toning on/or below the level you’ve lifted to, which gives max deposit of tone. Formulas can contain many different shades/or levels, depending on what you want the result to be.

Hey Craig! I'm currently in a bit of a dilemma and need your advice💕💕. I apologize for how long this comment is going to be in advance haha. I've been box-dyeing my hair for the last 2.5 years now (I know, shame on me.. but it's cheap and there's only so much a uni student can afford haha) to an 8_7 level "honey blonde". I'm a natural very ashy blonde that's still pretty light (I'm guessing about an 8 or 9). Now, I let my roots grow out a bit because I've been wanting to return to being blonde. I had a hairdressers appointment yesterday and showed her inspo photos and everything and her approach was basically to pull highlights with one of those plastic caps where strands are pulled through. She applied the bleach on the front bits first which now means my natural roots at the front lifted to about a level 10, the lenghts are between an 8 and a 9 and the parts she didn't highlight are obviously still orange. I know she tried her best and did what she thought was right - so no blame on her! After blow drying I told her I wasn't really satisfied and asked if a toner would help to make everything more ashy and look more cohesive with my natural color - she said most toners are a money grab and wash out after a couple washes. Now obviously from your video I now know that toners work haha - would you say I should go to a different salon and ask for it to be toned cooler? I don't care if it gets a bit darker.. my roots are very ashy so I think it would make it all look way more cohesive.. or do you think the box dye would make it impossible to tone? Right now I just feel like I look like an an orange, yellow, white striped zebra with ashy roots and that's really not the look I'm going for lol I know this video is a few months old but it would mean the world to me if you could reply!! 💕💕 xoxo

Hi there, no worries for the long comment, it’s all good. Firstly - it’s impossible to give a definitive answer, as I can’t see your hair… That said - toning with something like Shades EQ Gloss would make a world of difference. In my pro opinion, as your hair is many levels/shades, it’s best left to a hairstylist to do it. It this isn’t an option, have a watch of some of the other videos in my Toning playlist - the most recent might help. Let me know how you get on. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨

Home colourist here. Thank you for thank you thank you thank you for this fabulous content. As a pee blonde myself right now and being a makeup artist I am embarassed to be seen right now. Colour theroy is in my blood with makeup, howeber when it comes to my hair though; I am not lost precisely but extremely hesitent of the execution process as it has taken me years to grow my hair out. Any way, I have a question when it comes to determining what to do next, i have watched the toning playlist and haven't come across this information yet. How is it determined if one is to use a toner or a "colour" after lifting the hair to point where you can determine the undertone but dont know if you need a 'wash' in the hair or an actual colour depoist. Is it a matter of the staying time and how it grows out, or is it about the 'chemical over processing' aspect?

Hi there, I’m so pleased the content has helped and thanks for watching/letting me know, I really appreciate you. So that’s quite a BIG question - I would suggest you watch the blonde toning video if not already, as it does cover some of it… I never use permanent hair colour to tone, I always lift to the required undertone, then use demi or sometimes semi. The main reason is that I’d father have the right canvas and use less “energy” to add tone for 2 reasons - 1. Why use ammonia and possibly compromise the hair further…even with a low peroxide there’s a bigger chemical reaction. 2. That reaction can make the toner fade faster…or make it harder to remove. There is A LOT more to it than that…perhaps I’ll do a dedicated video, the question is coming up a lot.

My issue is that it's grown out as I've aged to an ashy blonde, with my silver as great highlights and some of my natural golden blonde has stood its ground! 😂 I despise the ashy blonde. I want to fight it without losing my golden locks and silver. I've seen something called vanilla blonde ...was that done on natural hair? Can you do toner on natural hair??😢😢😢

Also is using semi permanent color with a less strength developer same as using toner. Lots of questions. I just can’t afford the salons price every six weeks. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! :-) I hope you can help me out! My natural hair level is a level 8. (dirty / ash blonde colour) Over the years I have been using permanent hair dye (Goldwell Topchic) on the roots and lengths to make my hair a coppery blonde colour. (also level 8) I'm in the search of something "less damaging" for my hair and was looking at the Redken Shades EQ toners. Would the Redken toner also cover my (natural) roots if I use it on the roots and the lengths? Or does it only work on previously colored hair? Thank you so much in advance and keep up the good work! 🙂

Hi Dominique! Awww, thanks for watching and for your kind words, glad it’s helpful. Shades EQ Gloss is a demi permanent so it doesn’t have the “power” to lift - you’re using a permanent colour, so this could aid in the vibrancy of the current result…even though you’re on the same level as your natural. Shades EQ will only add tone. I would perhaps suggest using the existing formula - letting it process - rinse it off - then find a SEQG formula that works for you and applying that all over to refresh the mids/ends and add shine to the roots - afraid I can’t help with a specific formula, it’s too nuanced but there are videos here on my channel.

Super helpful! I have a question...I have been using shades to blend in my (25%?) grey roots. I am naturally about a level 6 so I have been using a 6NB (up to 1/2oz) and a 6N to neutralize it a bit. Still I find, especially as it wears off, that the grey areas are very light and warm! Too warm. If I cool that off what do I add ?, I know, complicated..but your darker shade worked out well..but you were all over platinum, right? Thank you!!

Thank you, I’m so glad it was helpful, it was fun to produce. So there is quite a lot to your question - but the simple answer is that you can’t really get the grey to blend without it being warm as it fades…less NB and it won’t blend so much. You’re already using a FAB formula. My hair is super fine, I only have 5% grey and just the very tips were bleached.

Very informative, thank you! What about the lasting effect of a toner? I understand a toner won't last as long as a dye, and a hairdresser once told me that we can mix the dye with a 6% volume to create a toner. I'm curious to know if the (little) peroxide will effect the (already colored-) hair negatively (?) I'm not a hairdresser but I imagine that any peroxide will have effect or is this a misconception? Thank you in advance, love your video's. :)

Hi there, thanks for watching and your kind words. So that’s quite a big question, there are a few things…and many other videos that cover it here on my channel. Most toners are “demi-permanent” and they do contain some peroxide, (the “volume”) they need it to have some staying power - in my opinion they are the best thing to tone with. The “energy” does not cause a negative effect on the hair…of course there are many factors but generally they are non damaging. I would never use permanent colour to tone with for many reasons, to many to get into on here in a comment - but the main one being it’s too pigmented and more pigment/ammonia doesn’t mean it will last longer.

I found this video along with many others to be very helpful while doing my research. I am a natural redhead, so determining which toner I should use has been a little difficult. Between the levels of 1 and 10, where would natural redheads typically land? I know when I bleach it, I'll most likely see more yellow or yellow/orange... I am pale so I'm okay with staying in the cool, so blue with a small amount of violet? I hate that there doesn't seem to be clear info out there for natural redheads, even box dyes/bleach dont show the color change for redheads =(

Oh wow, that’s a big job to get a result from yourself at home, I’m not against it but it’s a lot. If you want your result to be green, you really need to lift as light as you can - too much orange and green don’t make a very pretty result….and pre-toning heavily first will make the result “muddy”. Hey Craig, I watched your toning video as you advised - first, thank you very much for that. However, I still am a little bit confused about the last part of the video where you explained how to get as you described that “zingy, silver” grey color. I am really struggling with that I have hair that is pretty resistant but I use the blondeme color system and I am able to get it to the very very light blonde that is required. I am then using the blondeme ‘ice’ toner on top, but as you have described in your video. I am getting quite a dark result and not that beautiful sparkly, light silver and I’m not understanding what it is that I need to add to change that I think you might have mentioned ‘clear’ in your video but I don’t understand why and how that works -if you had the time and were able to explain I would be so grateful-also I find that the toner fades very fast and although I have silver shampoos, they don’t quite return the hair to the original color, and in fact, make it even darker than it originally was. I’m wondering if that is simply due to this type of color or there is something I can do to prolong the toner in my hair? 🙏🏻😊❤

Hi Nora, thanks for watching. There are many, many videos on my channel that explain the theory of a “zingy” blonde - sound to me (there are MANY factors) like you might need to add clear to your toner mix…if there is one in that line..? And the other question is, why is it that so many people who are doing their hair or innocent, one or doing their hair at home? They think that you have to have a splash of something warm or that you're formula has to have. Alarm tone in it. Or maybe even a neutral. I've seen a lot of them with a neutral in it. And when you're doing your hair at home, what would be the benefit of lifting it to a level 10 VS a level 9 or 9 and a 1/2?

Love the video and I feel much more educated! Although I do got some questions, as I am planning to color my hair at home and I'd be so happy if u have time to answer them. So basically I did a balayage at a salon (on virgin hair), at first I thought it looked nice, but now after some time I feel like it's too bright and doesn't blend well with my natural hair color at all. So naturally I am about a 6 to about a 7 in the lengths and I'm now a 9 to maybe a 10 mixed in with the 6-7. The colors I've been looking at are 8.31 and the other one is 7.31. So to the questions; if I put the 8.31 into my hair and to my roots, will I risk turning my roots orange/yellow? Second question; Will the ash tone in either of these colors risk turning my hair greenish? And lastly; my goal is a color that is warm-neutral but doesn't look too red/copperish, is the combination of a golden tone and an ash tone a good choice for this..?

Thank you, glad it helped. If you’re using a demi permanent hair colour to tone it shouldn’t lift - as long as you’re mixing it with the specified developer etc etc. Hard for me to ever comment on specific tone - we all see colour differently and I can’t see your hair. If the primary tone in the colour being used it gold, that is what you’ll see the most in the result (again, impossible for me to be specific) Thanks for watching.

Great, thanks for watching. You could just apply the toner to the root, the area that needs it. Use my recent video on how to apply “box dye” as a guide. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, thank you for watching! Tbh I don’t really use the NA’s at all, they are quite cool and contain a fair amount of blue…my formulas at that level would generally be warm/and or neutral.

hi i m trying to lighten my roots i m’tired of doing my greys every 3 weeks so i did a kind of contouring bleaching some stands but it turned out a bit orange even if my hair has color in it my natural base is an ashy light brown like a 6 i used to put golden in them i don t like the ashy look i need to neutralize the orange this time so i guess i need to use violet or blue to follow the color chart but i would also like to blend my greys i bought the eq golden blonde if i donthat it will look even more orange right so i m a bit lost with what i should do should i tone to neutralize the orange then use the golden blonde in a second time i hope i m clear english isn t my main language 😅 thank you for the video i ll look at it again tontake notes to be sure i m not missing any info

@clairecoulon1747 Hi there It’s very tricky for me to give specific advice - and almost impossible without seeing your hair and knowing all of your hairs “history”. Ideally you need to lighten the hair (the bits that are orange) more - that way it’s way easier to tone and get the result you’re after. The video has all you need to choose a toner - blue is the opposite of orange…but it’s a powerful tone, so I wouldn’t go in to strong to begin with. Shades EQ Gloss does not cover grey - the NB line will blend grey but not cover. There’s a playlist here on my channel called “hair color theory” it might be helpful. Good luck.

Great detailed explaination. Question . when someone want to be neutral do you always add N series at that level to the formula?

Thanks. Thats a BIG question…it depends on so many factors.

So if you lift to expose red and want to cancel it out. You add green to the toner, but what do you add it too? A neutral? You wouldn’t do straight green right?

Personally, I’d lift beyond red - it’s extremely tricky to get a good result cancelling out with green…and it’ll be “natural”. And yes, I’d mix it with a cool neutral shade.

Thank you for the response. It was an example in my head to understanding formulating. So hair doesn’t turn green or muddy looking.

@@Thatonegirl_175 You’re welcome, thanks for watching. No, it shows great understand - it’s just that there are some “rules”…especially for the very strong tones such as green/blue.

Thanks so much for your video tutorials, I’ve learned so much 😊 could I use 8vb on its own? My hair is level 8 and is too warm, I don’t want to add colour I just want to cool the overall tone. Thank you

You’re welcome, thanks for watching. I think I’ve answered this already…you can but it’s very powerful, it will make the result very deep/dark.

Great video, new subscriber here, used to be licensed but lapsed long ago. I recently self-bleached up to level9, but 8 in some spots, having a hard time toning out the yellow gold. My question(s) to you is regarding the 2nd tone to mix with toner... i want to go 8bv to neutralize the stubborn yellow gold, but don't want the level 9 areas/streaks to turn purple. How do ya know what to mix and what ratio? Is it always 50/50? neutral? Or maybe ash? Is it a pretty standard mix formulation you follow, or is it trial, error, and experience? Thanks in advance!!!

Thank you, really glad it helped, thanks for watching. There are another couple of videos here on my channel specifically around toning using cool formulas. I can’t make a call on what your toner needs to be, each mix will be unique. You are in the right area with VB - perhaps Di a test strand underneath first…

Great tutorial. Could you help me out. I got medium to dark brown hair with highlights that are basically a level 10 and look white. I want to make the highlights golden & caramel in color would I use a yellow toner?

Thanks. I’m afraid it’s impossible for me to fine out specific formulas remotely, for many reasons - the main one being we’ll both have different ideas of what “caramel” is etc, colour is just so subjective. There are many videos here on my channel that give out formulas.
