He would never speak about the situation I’m going to share. He’s very professional and very diplomatic. He’s also an established, well known and respected top executive in the entertainment industry. When Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian & her sitcom ended, Hollywood wanted nothing to do with her. It seemed as if her career was over. That was heartbreaking to me because aside from being part of the LGBTQ community as a gay man, I’ve always loved her comedy. At the time, my partner was the president/CEO of the television Academy. (Emmys) When he was thinking of who to consider as a host for the 2001 Emmy awards, I suggested Ellen, knowing that she most likely wasn’t getting any other offers. It all worked out and she was set to host that year‘s Emmys amid the havoc of the award season which was thrown into chaos due to 9/11 having just taken place. Without getting into full details, on air, she was great and the awards show was a hit and Hollywood welcomed her back. She went on to host her multi Emmy award-winning talk show and this is where I’ll pick up the second half of this and give some insight as to the kind of person she really is. I’ll bypass all her rules of not looking at her, talking to her, or touching her and how she’s acted and treated other people. I’ll just share what my partner only recently shared with me when I asked him why he’s been so silent during all this drama. What he told me left me shocked and very disappointed. It parallels all the stories told by others. When he left the television Academy he went on to be the CEO/president of the largest media marketing corporation in the world. It had headquarters all around the world and once a year they had a huge convention and awards show that was usually held in New York and lasted about a week. Everyone who is anyone vied for an invite to Keynote or give a presentation at the event. Everyone from Oprah, the Kennedys, Deepak Chopra, Maya Angelou, Donald trump, etc. etc. Opening acts for the convention were legendary performer such as Tina turner and Aretha Franklin just to name two. So it was pretty major. I don’t know what year it was, but my partner asked if Ellen would consider being one of the headlining keynote speakers, if not, the one headline Keynote to open the event. They already had established a professional relationship that helped her thru hosting the Emmys. It wasn’t asked as a favor. It was a prestigious and highly compensated offer. She didn’t respond. It took several attempts before a lackey from her management team relayed her message which was that she knew who he was and exactly what he did for her and her career, (as if it were nothing or less than significant) and the answer was NO. No professionalism, no gratitude, no manners, no kindness. Just NO. She didn’t even have enough respect or consideration to tell him personally. In the 22 years that I’ve witnessed my husband work with public personas, nearly all other hosts, speakers, and keynotes, regardless of who they were, acknowledged their given situation in kind. Many were legends, icons, and important public and political figures. Some were just hot personas of the moment, but they all showed class. All but one. All but Ellen. It’s about time she gets called out and exposed.
