“If somehow the lord gave me a second chance at that moment, I would do it all over again.” Whether Ellie liked it or not, her very existence changed Joel and made him into a better person after twenty years of suffering. Ellie may not have been able to see a life beyond her immunity and the possibility for saving humanity, but Joel could, because he was able to find that life. He became a father again, and he was going to do anything and everything to protect his daughter. In a way, it’s poetic that this was the last conversation Joel and Ellie had before he died. Their relationship was being rebuilt, only to have it cut short. It explains Ellie’s trauma, because she had the chance to bring their relationship back, but lost it.

@@BaldingSince1999Tlou2 has amazing writing but the story isn't for everyone because the writers decided to make it super dark and depressing which I and many other people like. And at the end of the day objectively at the end of the story you can argue Ellie is a worse person than Abby because she lets revenge consume her. But I like to remind people that her story probably isn't over.

This last flashback gives the ENTIRE story a new context. The context that was hidden from us until. It’s another layer of looking into Ellie’s motives. Her mission was revenge, grieving, sorting out those last complicated emotions and words she had with Joel, being mad at him for what he did but also beating herself up about not being his friend again sooner. I think she felt a lot of guilt and a little lost looking for a new meaning to her life only to find out that she didn’t really want to kill Abby, she just wanted Joel and had gotten in way over her head. Her actions killed all of Abbies friends and killed, disabled or led her friends to abandon her. She’s the proverbial Ahab in this rendition of Moby Dick, her sheer will and wrath chasing after the white whale sank the whole ship and took the crew down with her. She’s alone, the one thing that scares her most.

@@ivannunez8738It was executed poorly. Ellie killed dozens upon dozens of people, only for her to randomly change her mind once confronted with Abby. Ellie literally executed an unarmed dude not long before her fight with Abby, yet she all of a sudden has a change of heart. The idea and message is great, but they executed it in a terrible way. I would have preferred if Ellie went ahead and killed Abby, showing that she is still young and has a lot of growing to do. Also, having both Joel and Ellie make a morally questionable choice at the end of both of their games just fits. It would leave TLOU3 to show Ellie grow as a person

Joel had every right. There was also no guarantee that they could even create a cure. Killing the only immune person is also a terrible way of trying to create a cure, if it failed there would be no back up. Her death could have been meaningless.
@diannebdee
@diannebdee Жыл бұрын
My feeling exactly. In the show, there are two doctors who categorically state there is no cure. And in this scene in the game, Joel should have handed Ellie a heaping dose of reality Joel Miller size. He should have told Ellie the rules as an adult, and she is the kid. I hate when they have kids mouthing off to the adults like this.

@Fangtorn
@Fangtorn Жыл бұрын
No he didn't. First, even a remote chance of developing a cure is worth one girl's life. This is a world where girls like Ellie are ripped apart by clickers or murdered by raiders on a daily basis, and humanity is circling the drain to extinction. Ellie at the Firefly hospital was the last best chance to save mankind, and Joel ended it. He had _reason_ to do it but he didn't have a "right" to do that. His personal feelings are not more valuable than the potential survival of the human race. Second, it was also against Ellie's wishes, which Joel knew. Obviously the Fireflies didn't care about Ellie's wishes but they didn't care about Ellie in general, whereas Joel does care and knows enough about her to know she would've gone through the surgery. That's why he lies to her. It wasn't just about saving her life, it was also about preserving their relationship.
@Fangtorn
@Fangtorn Жыл бұрын
@@diannebdee Do you really think the point of those doctors in the show is to make the moral dilemma of the finale pointless? If there is no possibility of a cure than Joel is unequivocally in the right, which sucks all the moral ambiguity and narrative weight out of that ending. Also, you sound like one of those psychopathic parents who thinks they can treat children however they want because they're older. Ellie is roughly 18/19 at this point, not even Joel's biological kid, and has been lied to and gaslit her for years by him about the single most important thing in her life. You would have to have the emotional intelligence of a plank of wood not to understand why she might "mouth off" a bit at that.

I wish Ellie knew her life already mattered. Not only to us as viewers but to Joel, to Tommy, Marie, Dina, Jesse. She mattered to so many people. I understand how Ellie feels but the truth is, the world is way beyond saving. And if I remember right, it was confirmed that the “cure” wouldn’t have worked and would’ve been useless anyway.
@Fangtorn
@Fangtorn Жыл бұрын
You remember wrong, there was never any guarantee but the Fireflies were convinced a cure was viable, and besides it completely robs the ending of any moral dilemma or narrative weight if it was impossible and Joel was unequivocally in the right. Also, why is the world is beyond saving? Doesn't a place like Jackson, where they're basically living a modern existence, disprove that notion? The world is only beyond saving if there's no cure. In that case humanity is a few generations away at best from extinction, but with a cure we're basically back to the pre-industrial state we endured for most of human history. It might take centuries but the world could be rebuilt eventually. I think Ellie know she matters to people, but to what? Maybe two dozen people? Whereas her sacrifice could have saved countless more.

Nah, that’s the point. Joel was always going to die a brutal death and frankly, the way he died was more realistic. It’s supposed to be shocking, it’s supposed to motivate you to feel something ugly. Literally, none of the main characters are traditional “good guys”. We only think they are because we see these little special stories I’m their lives but most people will have those regardless of they’re good or bad people. Joel and Tommy did A LOT of fucked things to people, Abby did fucked up things to people, Ellie did too, Dina was only halfway in with Ellie and would’ve left her if Jesse hadn’t died. This story is closer to what people would actually do in dire times with little to no law or structure outside of established settlements. This is a damn solid story, it challenges what we’ve been conditioned to think good and bad is, what revenge is, what people will do for those they love and what people truly want.

I didn't like how Ellie just reduced her entire existence to her being immune and maybe a cure, thinking that only by dying her life would've mattered. It's just sad. Another series had a similar thing where the main guy basically reduced his existence to being the vessel of a great power and focused solely on completing it, thinking he himself was expendable as long as his duty was done. It only led him to run himself ragged to the point he could barely stand up and almost lost, until others were able to remind him that even though he had the power to save the world he was still just a kid, more than the value as an asset he had value as a person and was not alone. Ellie did too, she was more than just the cure but failed to see it, more so it isn't even an assured thing that the cure would've worked. What if it didn't, then Ellie would've died for nothing. And if it did work, it wouldn't have fixed the world in the blink of an eye, it would've just caused a new war for the control over the cure. Still, the worst thing is, that if Joel had actually allowed them to do the surgery, Ellie would've never even known it or had a say in it. It sure is easier to complain about it after the fact but what would she have done in the moment? The last thing she remembers is drowning, she would've never known if she did or did not save the world. I'm with Joel 200%, and it's the reason why I didn't like Ellie that much this time around, her drama with Joel seemed really unwarranted and the game wants you to support Ellie in her anger or say that what Joel did was wrong when let's be real, if it were us and someone we deeply cared about, we all would've done the same thing

@stoptryingtomakemeusemynam7829 Joel didn't take away anything, but Marlene's own sense of godhood. And that's all that was in Marlene's myopic version of that world. Not allowing Ellie to wake up and ask her was wrong. I believe had Ellie had the chance to know the actual process of what was going to happen, she would have chosen life. Marlene was the one who didn't tell Ellie the truth, not Joel. This scene is wrong in its direction. Ellie should have been mad at Marlene, not Joel.

It was a pretty good shot. The Fireflies had a pre-infection neurologist/neurosurgeon who spent 20 years researching the Cordyceps Fungus. If they had been able to operate, he probably could have figured out what made Ellie immune and use that to save the world. Would they have been able to mass manufacturer a vaccine? Maybe not. But it still would have been a huge step towards ending the Cordyceps Fungus.

Ellie also lost people. Riley, Tess, Henry, Sam, etc. She carries an immense amount of survivor's guilty for living when others didn't just because of some chance immunity, so she wants that immunity to mean something by developing a cure and saving lives, but Joel prevented any chance of that from happening, then lied to and manipulated her for years. It's hardly a "high horse" to feel betrayed and angry about that.
