@jp9707
@jp9707 3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahgabriella84 If you 'cancel' someone, you make it so that they aren't able to voice their opinion any more. Intimidating them through stalking and doxxing is one way to do this (and a bad thing to do). If you simply choose not to listen to what a person is saying, then you haven't silenced them. They're still free to say whatever they want. Nobody owes it to them to listen. It's like if somebody writes a book that's terribly written, and so nobody buys it; they haven't been silenced, nobody prevented them from publishing the book, but people aren't obliged to buy it and read it either. So blocking her is not 'cancelling' her, as she can still voice her opinion as much as she wants; some people just don't want to have to be forced to listen to her.
@jp9707
@jp9707 3 жыл бұрын
Side-note: a lot of the people complaining about being "cancelled" HAVEN'T been silenced. Look at JK Rowling; since making her transphobic comments last year she's published a novel, written loads of articles, given loads of talks about how 'silenced' she is (does she even recognise the irony in that?), been interviewed by all kinds of media, and has recently even been given an award by the BBC for an article in which she doubles down on her transphobia. She claims to have been 'silenced', all while having every opportunity to broadcast her opinion. It's true that a small percentage of her critics have attacked her online, with death threats and the like, and that is completely unacceptable. However, it's not fair to characterise all people who criticise her as violent oppressors, when the majority are simply disagreeing with her. It might seem like she's being overwhelmingly attacked from all sides from her point of view, because she's in the centre of it and it may feel overwhelming. There's also the fact that people who have been victims of abuse in the past tend to be hyper-vigilant for threats and can interpret criticism as an attack because of this. I'd hate to be at the centre of a Twitter storm, it sounds terrifying. However, she still needs to be accountable for her words! She's free to speak her mind, but other people are free to criticise her for those words. Not all criticism is an 'attack'. In fact, telling people that they can't criticise you is an attempt to silence them. Rowling is essentially saying that SHE should have freedom of speech, but people who disagree with her shouldn't. The problem is that instead of criticising the things she has said, the media and many everyday people are now busy accusing trans people and their allies of "cancelling" opinions they don't like. So the mainstream conversation ISN'T about the fact that this very powerful woman is oppressing an already oppressed minority group; instead, people are turning on this group and criticising them because of the actions of a small minority within that group who have taken things too far. It reminds me of the BLM movement. The vast majority of protesters are peaceful. A small minority are violent and attack police and property. Suddenly, people are characterising the whole BLM movement as violent, when what they should actually be doing is asking: why are these people protesting in the first place? Instead of focusing on the intense racial oppression permeating societies worldwide, people are instead asking "why are black people so violent?" The answer: they aren't. A small number of protestors have taken things too far, and now everybody is being painted with the same brush. We shouldn't be blaming oppressed minorities and criticising their actions based on a few fringe extremists. *People seem to be more willing to criticise a minority's reaction to oppression than to criticise the oppression itself.* Instead of criticising minorities for speaking up, we should be listening to their concerns.

@Eliza Walker - Many lesbians start life saying they are straight because it's "normal" and they hadn't questioned it yet. So we could ask: "Why are lesbians ashamed of being straight?" That's how condescending this is. Needing others to conform to your categories because it's easier for you would be self-serving. Ironically, people who identified as lesbian before and since moved on to understand themselves as something else are in a better position to support the lesbian cause than somebody who stays and secretly doubts themselves.

Arielle clearly believes that trans women are less of women than cis women. She just won’t directly say it. She literally said that the word “woman” shouldn’t include trans women that are pre-op and pre-hormone (Noah Finnce cites this in his video on Arielle). This completely ignores that some trans women have health issues that prevent them from taking hormones and there are valid concerns about SRS that lead many trans people to decide to not get surgeries. Edit: I meant to say that Arielle believes trans women are LESS of women than cis women, not more. I mistyped that.

@@aryanyudha9264 so the thing is is gender and “biological sex” are actually not the same. Gender is socially constructed, meaning that it has to do with the way a person sees themselves, the way others see them, and how they identify. This has been proven to be independent of what the person was assigned at birth. For example, if a person is born female identifies as a trans man, they are a real man, because on the inside they’re a man. If a person is nonbinary like moe, they are really nonbinary because their mind does not match male or female. You can change your gender and gender identity, because that has nothing to do with sex or how someone is assigned at birth. This argument also does not make sense because of how common intersex traits are without people even knowing. I hope this cleared things up
@hydrogen3266
@hydrogen3266 4 жыл бұрын
@@aryanyudha9264 I’m starting to think you’re a troll. There are real SCIENCE points, like neurology that have proved that trans men have brains similar to cis men, and the same for trans women and cis women. That’s real science, not sociology. And yes, intersex is relevant because you said you can’t change your gender and said that sex and gender are the same. And while we’re on the point of Caster Semenya, would you consider her male or female? Because she identifies as female, was assigned female, but her chromosomes disagree with her physical appearance and her identity. So, I’m not sure what bringing her case up was supposed to do to help you, but it actually shows that gender is more than physicality and chromosomes because those two can naturally disagree with each other. And just because it’s rare doesn’t mean there aren’t real people with intersex conditions. You also should really stop calling Elliot “she/her” pronouns because he has stated that he does not wish to use those. Elliot has not transitioned medically, but he has started his transition by coming out. Just because he didn’t immediately go on hormones or have surgery does not make him less trans, nor does it put you in the position to be rude about his transition and his life. And yes, you are being transphobic, because you’re literally saying that you can’t change gender, that it’s the same as sex, using “she/her” pronouns on a person who does not use those, which is purposefully rude and misgendering, even if you are using his new name. Saying that people have no use for him, just because he is a short trans man? That’s discrimination, and your comments have spiraled into transphobia that is actually harmful. I’m not silencing your free speech, I’m just trying to show you your ignorance and the holes in your argument. It is not rational to go out of your way to be rude to people because you disagree, and your argument is not based in logic, because it goes against sociology, which is still a social science and the way people treat trans people in society is still part of the topic. But also real science proves trans people’s existence. So yeah, you’re a transphobe, but it doesn’t mean you don’t have the freedom to say it. I’m not silencing you, I’m just trying to show you that it’s okay to show compassion and to care about people and how they feel, because feelings are actually important. These are PEOPLE. Real people.

When Elliot came out and was on the news I was sitting with my father and he just goes: "Are you trans like him?" (except he didnt say him) and my instant reaction to not out myself terribly is just: "HAHA NO" and he believed it LMAO Im super proud of Elliot though, since I know how hard it is, especially coming out to millions of people? Even if you're genderfluid or abrosexual, you still didn't get to choose that you were genderfluid or abrosexual. What you can choose, however, is the way you label yourself bt using different labels that may suit you better than the previous ones... like identifying as a panromantic homoromantic, but then identifying as 'queer' because you think that label is better for you, or identifying as a trans guy and then identifying as a trans non-binary guy because you think that label is better for you as you've just now realised your non-binaryness.

People change and have the right to change there status, when I was in the closet I was straight to everyone els but it didn’t mean I was really straight, so my pint is just because Elliot in the past called themselves something els doesn’t mean he is not now valid! He’s got every right just like when someone who bi then comes out as just gay or anything els. as a lesbian i can say that arielle does not speak for me or any of the gay women i know. lesbophobia is rife and that there’s a lot of stigma attached to being a gender nonconforming woman, but all too often people like arielle use that point to justify their transphobia. transphobia and lesbophobia are BOTH bad. trans visibility and lesbian visibility are BOTH important, esp considering that there are trans and nb lesbians. marginalised communities shouldn’t be pitted against one another. it literally helps nobody.

@@rigbywalker7190 hi i didn't say that arielle was lesbophobic ?? - i was saying that lesbophobia IS an issue, and that arielle talks about this, but that her takes on it veer into transphobia, even though the trans and lesbian communities have some overlap and could stand in solidarity with one another. tbh i haven't seen any evidence that trans people gain money/clout/popularity points upon coming out - if anything they're more likely to be vilified because that's the world we live in. there may well be people who identify as trans/nonbinary before realising that they're actually not. It's my personal opinion that this isn't a ''threat''' to the 'reputation' of the lgbt community. neither are lgbt people in 'straight passing' relationships. wanna know what the real threat is? actual homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. the straight appropriation of lgbt culture is a whole other thing that's tied up in consumerism. dont think it can be equated to a nonbinary person wanting to use neopronouns.

Pronouns do not always equal gender, as pronouns are a form of gender expression, just pronouns are a form of gender expression. He's still clearly incredibly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community and outspoken about our oppression and treatment in society, so what on earth did y'all "lose." is Elliot still gonna be playing Vanya tho? cause she's a queer lesbian woman, and Elliot isn't. I remember a few years back people got really mad at Scarlet Johanson getting cast as a trans person in a movie because she wasn't the same identity as the character... is the same thing going to apply to Elliot or is it suddenly ok because he's a minority? I love Elliot as Vanya and he did a really great job the first 2 seasons as her so I wouldn't want it to change up for future season but still, its something to think about. Either way, what that chick said is messed up, that's like saying "oh look we lost another straight person to the gays" its just fricked up.

I once commented under Arielle's video, and the level of immaturity on the replies I got tells all we need to know about her fanbase... and about her mindset, in the end of the day.

Just a tip for anyone wondering: When referring to someone who uses multiple pronouns, unless specified, it's generally best to use them interchangeably at the same time-- for example, "He's my friend, their name is ___"

Thank you so much, I was wondering about that since I do not know anyone personally who is using more than one pronoun yet!

She's basically saying that trans men are confused women wth... I can't even imagine how much it would hurt me if a "friend" said that to me if I came out as trans to them. It's so sad to see people from the LGBT+ community hating other people from the same social group. It's so sad and disappointing. I didn't know about Arielle at all before I watched this video and well I now hate her LOL..

Yeah, and she wonders why people call her a TERF; "trans men are just brainwashed lesbians" is a classic TERF talking point.

Thank you for reading Elliot's post. I have spoken with many allies who saw it and liked/ reposted without even reading. His words will be in history books someday. Living to see that day.

umm hey.... So my name is Jordyn and from about 4 months ago up until fairly recently recently, I've identified as a trans girl.... I had a lot of panic attacks about it recently and didn't really understand why until I saw some videos of yours. such as the video on how to tell if you are non binary etc..... I guess this is me coming out, hey I'm Jordyn she/they non binary. Thank you for helping me find who I truly am.
