Basically, it's a hacker puzzle, they vary in difficulty as well.

Not everything is allowed, Some ctfs are held over the internet. So ddos,dos is out of the question 90% of the time. Even ones that are held locally still don’t allow flooding of data unless it’s like a buffer overflow

God I love this show.

It's a mix of those three ahahah In fact, if you listen to him carefully, he said they already find how the data are send to the server, that's reverse engineering parts, because in this CTF the data need to be encrypted then sent to save the game, and decrypted and sent to load it, you need to know exactly how you can "poison it" like he said, that's through reverse engineering he understood which library was used, and which process of cypher was used (XOR chaining in this case). Even he told them the solution to "find the key" used to cipher (because in this "XOR chaining", there is a part with a XOR between the data and "a key"), just send a game statement you know to find manually the key (you can find the key of some algorithms like XOR by knowing what the encrypted text looks like and the plain text sent to get this encrypted text, for example : A XOR key = C, if you know A (plain text) and C (ciphered text) then you can guess the key) And when you understand how it exactly works, you need to craft a data that executes a command, that's the command injection part. They used the vulnerability in the pickle library that was used to serialize and deserialize the game statements, to inject a shellcode. (If I am not wrong that's the solution of the real CTF they based on, the data was encrypted using something like data XOR pickled data XOR key then encrypted in base64, and the the decryption used to load, was the exact opposite, and then the shellcode used the pickled data vulnerability)
