Elliott Smith playing Passing Feeling Jan 31, 2003 Henry Fonda Theater, Los Angeles, CA If I labeled anything wrong, please let me know. And you can tell that half way through the show I realized that there was a balcony.

Took a long time to stand. Took an hour to fall. The help I require, just to exist at all. His lyrics are so real and true. Such an underrated musician, it's a crime.

Yes, it is a crime. He was murdered. I see he didn't look so great in his 2003 performances but I think he would have evened out after another year or so of sobriety. He was going through a lot of changes and as a recovering drug addict/alcoholic myself (of over 13 years now), I wouldn't want the first 2 years back for a million dollars. I believe what those closest to him said in that he was not suicidal at the time of his tragic death - and from what I read about his death details, there is plenty of reason to think he was murdered in a fit of rage. It was not about love, it was about money and ownership and a bruised ego in what seemed to have been a very toxic relationship. Happens alllllll the time - just sucks it had to be him - a once in a lifetime talent with so much to offer to the world with his sublime art. I try not to think about what the last 16 years would have brought us. It takes my breath away. How selfish, I know. His potential was limitless.

I've always wondered what Elliott's mixes would have been like for songs like these. I think his family and friends did a good job, but it's a shame he didn't get a chance to see his vision through for the Basement songs.

@xXxBibblexXx I'm fairly certain he had been clean for some time. Maybe not at this point, but. . . yeah. But interesting observation.

@Galefox I have a feeling there are people out there with mind blowing talent, it's just record companies aren't willing to gamble on there marketability. So instead they are confined to playing clubs for the rest of there life to a lucky few.

so you are the taper! awesome! would it be possible for you to upload this in DVD quality at some point? just for the lossless heads? you know how youtube compresses the video quality and all that i hope. even if not, thanks so much for bringing your camera and saving this magical evening.

I feel so bad for him, he went through so much in his life and i wish he could’ve gotten better and been happy
@xxmyharturhandzxx3 жыл бұрын
that's the even sadder thing, he was a lot better towards the end. got off drugs, stopped drinking, and seemed so much happier than the years before.

I'm talking about his lyrical ability. Have you read "opium and the romantic imagination" . It's theme is the romantic poets f the 19th century, that took opium. what the had in comon was the ability to transform very vivid dreams into verse. the same kind of beautiful and vivid imagary is all through elliotts albums. dig?
@chamataka12 жыл бұрын
I think at this point he was sober in terms of heroin (and maybe alcohol)? A little bit of digging on Google shows that he went to Neurotransmitter Restoration Center to alleviate his addiction to drugs. At this point in his life (Jan 31, 2003), he was on the road to recovery. In August, he quit alcohol, caffeine, red meat, refined sugar, and psychiatric medication (according to wikipedia). So he was doing pretty well healthwise.

@xXxBibblexXx I agree with what Kieran5149 says. honestly because some one does drugs you think they, Elliott Smith of all people would do it in concert after he was supposedly clean. For shame.

the thing that's striking me about his music now, after giving it a "break" for about four years is... his chord progressions... were really not orthodox at all very interesting passing notes between chords

I think it's called opium. i.e. Google "Kuba Khan" by 19th century poet Samuel Coleridge - it's simply sublime verse, and was written on opium. There are plenty of other amazing writers and musicians who have used it also. Elliott of course was a long-time opiate user.

"im stuck here waiting for a passing feeling"

Fair call - the difference is probably substantial, however, as heroine is an derivative of morphine (the most active alkaloid in opium) it's questionable as to whether the affect would be so very different.

The song is a fade out- it repeats and gets quiter gradually and he didn't feel like playing the rest. Kind of funny

wow I'd disagree with you..I have first hand experience with most of the popular psychiatric drugs : SSRI's SNRI's Atypical antipsychotics, the older tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, beta blockers etc. as well as all of the illicit drugs, I'm a recovering heroin addict who has suffered from depression for years, kind of like Elliott, or maybe you're right I don't know anything...
@mykeydrive11 жыл бұрын
"quit psychiatric meds"...seems like nowadays people assume psych meds only do harm...I'm not convinced that discontinuation is a good thing, especially when you consider "discontinuation syndrome"...I mean he did end up killing himself

Anyone else notice him either pop a pill or rub some heroin on his gums? It's in the last few seconds as he comes back up. Elliott you were an outstanding artist with a tormented yet beautiful soul, may you rest in peace.

yeah dude he definitely just rubs some heroin on his gums right on stage or pops a pill....he just had his finger on his mouth thinking of what to play next
