Elliott fan? Check out my original music, Elliott covers, and vlogs over on my channel ---- Elliott Smith performs with Jon Brion on the Jon Brion Show in 2000. Solid set in pretty high quality. Drop a like for Elliott!
Full show originally uploaded by AlRosePromotions, I just cut up the segments.

I think Elliott’s melodies and chord compositions are right up there with the Beatles. He’s like a sad version of the Beatles.. except he plays all of the instruments and is genius level at all of them.. Very sad he’s gone.. Hard life.. RIP..

Same. I think he was a way more well rounded musician than Paul or John. Or pretty much anyone for that matter. He didn't get big by being revolutionary like they did, he was his own, isolated island of genius. He could outplay, outwrite, out-emotion the best of the best. And his catalogue is scary consistent.

Honestly, I'm a huge Beatles fan and I agree that Elliott's gift for melody, composition and musicianship is right on par with them. He was an insanely gifted artist.

To be fair the comparison is a bit of a stretch. Elliott Smith lacked the ability and will to write catchy pop songs for everyone, and that makes quite a difference. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but being hyper popular was a huge part of The Beatles' dynamic, and Smith definitely wasn't into that.

@@bobbykbobette7426 Not a stretch at all. Just because Elliott had no interest in writing catchy pop songs, it doesn't mean he couldn't. The Beatles developed it as a skill over so many year, they weren't born with it. I have no doubt he could have done it too. I'd even argue that some of his arrangements (like Colour Bars) are more sophisticated than anything they ever wrote, and I'm a massive Beatles fan.

I became a fan of Elliott Smith last year and I feel like an idiot for not getting into his music much sooner. It's become such a comfort to me. Man, I wish he were still here with us.

Slow this song down a tad and it would have been right at home on revolver or the white album. Elliot Smith was an absolute arranging/songwriting monster hiding in a painfully insecure shell. Criminally underrated.

It is a shame... But he definitely is recognized within the industry, and among musicians. He is the epitome of a musician's muscian.. But truly he deserved more exposure. Probably would have if his music wasn't so heavy and intense.
