I can't explain in words how. much this song means to me. The way Eilliott sings "more like a clown" is just so pure

I played this song once live in front of 50 or so strangers. The entire experience was a blur and I was on another planet, I don't even remember if I messed up any of the chords or not.

Quite possibly his best live performance. Perfect guitar and singing. Nobody compares to his songwriting skills.

I heard this song on from a basement on a hill, and thought wow, his song writing is even more complex the older he got. Then I found out he wrote it when he was like 24. Just an insanely talented song writer. It’s a shame he has the stigma of being “sad” or “depressed” with his music, people who classify him as that and skip listening are missing the best songwriter we’ve had in a few generations.

Dude was obsessed with suicide. I have a similar issue. His obsession with heroin use 5 or more years before he ever used it is kinda odd. My brother was an addict and I was depressed but he always seemed blissful high so one time I was suicidal and my nasty gf brought over heroin for some reason and I snorted it. The only times I ever was interesting was when I was high. Can’t open up otherwise. Wanna crawl out of my skin always. I’m 38 now, 4 years older than Elliott ever made it to, I’m on methadone which may be keeping me unhappy, I dunno. I stayed away from Elliott for years because it brings me back to the darkest days and it is legit depressing. I understand the beauty but his music is all very depressing and will keep me wallowing in it. That said I consider him up there with The Beatles in terms of songwriting.

The fact that this was about a month after I was born is incredible. Still stands up today. One of the greatest.

Pretty sure the story behind this one is he completely forgot about it until 2002/3. Near the end he was bringing up older ideas that never got used like the song unlucky charm / first timer. But hey you probably know that last bit!

He was lovely performer if it was the right crowd he could be so vulnerable, the type of music he played people need to be pretty receptive to make it a good atmosphere

great point. he truly needs the floor, so that the nuances may shine and so the atmosphere may settle into a comfortable stillness - transfixed by the young man with the guitar.

@@NC-tc3qw i mean between the bars is on either or, that's pretty dark tonally, but what i really think plants in better in basement is the feeling of hopelessness and just being done with life.

trippy... it makes me wonder which tunes on "From a Basement on the Hill" are written in 2002-2003. It seems many of the tracks were old tunes, certainly worthy of proper recording, but nonetheless, don't necessarily capture Elliott in his final year/months as I had once thought.
