I agree with Elliott. If Gauthier gave Briere a reason, he (and Jones) would have definitely listened and tried to find a way to fix it (within reason). I think Gauthier would have done really well in Philadelphia. I wish him well. I hope Drysdale wins the Norris Trophy as a Flyer.

Elliot's speculation makes sense as to why Gauthier may have soured on the Flyers. However, if true it does bring into question the kind of advice he's getting from those handling him or his ability to consider the advice he's getting. One thing is for sure. He will have a target on him during his first season, especially in Philly.

Elliott knows his shit. I remember when he was first on Hockey Night in Canada and wondered what he was doing there. He didn't play hockey. He wasn't a jock but somehow he developed the magic sauce to know what every team and every player that's in the mix is up to. He must be working 24/7 to keep on top of everything and that means he has to maintain relationships with all the GMs, Coaches, Agents and Scouts, plus all of the hockey media. The guy is impressive. I wonder how he makes his money but given his knowledge and connections he must be worth a ton of money.

Bryan Hayes from TSN says the Flyers handled it very badly. The guy is a mush. I'll never watch TSN while Hayes is on that channel. At least the NHL Network appreciates the difficulty for the franchise and how they handled it. I'm really happy Elliotte brought a new look into the picture. We've heard so many different rumors as to why Gauthier didn't want to play for the Flyers. He basically lost a year in the league because they couldn't sign him... It's just too bad he couldn't see that's part of the business, and he lost the year no matter what. If they Flyers wanted to be cruel, they could have held him up for 2 more years.

If that’s the case I think I understand. They probably came in, low balled him and said hey this is what we are giving you and nothing more. You can get an AHL contract. And then he was left shocked. And then subsequent conversations that proceeded were along the lines of are you ready to make that deal and be a flyer. To continue to rub it in. Based on how the Flyers did this whole smear campaign I think they are a lot more at fault for souring the relationship than they’ve led on. Gauthier just said to them, “I don’t want to be a flyer or I’m not signing” and there is no wrong in that at all. He has that right, he can stay in college all 4 years and become a free agent as well. He has that right and he owes a team nothing. They are the ones that drafted him just because he plays hockey. He has no obligation to the city or the organization. And the audacity of them to act like he feels privileged is insane. He’s the one who put in the work to be a top 5 selection in the NHL. Not the fat money pocket lining suits. This should be a disgrace to the Philadelphia organization. And even if he didn’t like torts he has that right as well. And he was honest with them and told them. He could’ve lied all 4 years and they would have gotten nothing. This isn’t right.
@jspotter89
@jspotter89 4 ай бұрын
Some fair points, but saying he gave them his reasons is not accurate as far as I understand. All the reporting I've seen indicates they still do not know exactly what changed. I agree with the premise that young players, especially high draft picks, can and should be able to utilize the influence they have to determine the course of their careers. They have that right. But I think there is a right way to go about it and a wrong way to go about it, and in the absence of Gauthier's side of the story (which he is fully justified in withholding if he wishes), it's hard not to conclude that he and his camp handled this in about the worst way possible.
@EDDYEAGLE
@EDDYEAGLE 4 ай бұрын
@@jspotter89 well reports have said him and his agent or maybe just his agent said they’re not signing. But still even if they didn’t say anything - Reports said conversations went cold after their last engagement - we could say that “inaction is action”. And I still think that not answering is still fine as well. Gauthier was drafted because they wanted him. Not the other way around. He owes them absolutely nothing. Not even a handshake if he doesn’t want to. And that should never be seen as disrespect either. Because they wanted him. People think that’s petty because they think it’s a privilege to play in the NHL because they don’t have that talent. But it’s the same as anything else. You put in the work to be a supreme talent at anything. You’d want to choose to be wherever you want. Lewis Hamilton for example. It’s just these pro sports try to flex their prowess over young boys and take them and pluck them from what they know and love and force them to love a city and town and organization they don’t know and might not care about. Some people are fine with that. Gauthier put his head down and kept on trucking and let his agent handle it. I think he’s a man amongst boys for that.

Torts is gonna Torts, especially with young players. No-one knows what Gauthier will become, he hasn't even played professional hockey yet. But all the stuff about it following him around for his career is pure garbage, plenty of young players have refused to sign with their drafting team. Adam Fox refused both Calgary & Carolina, it hasn't affected him in the slightest. Great story. However, it doesn’t add up. Briere said 2-3 months after they drafted him he told them he didn’t wanna be a Flyer. The draft is in the summer. Great story but again seems like Elliott spreading nonsense to sound more important than he actually is.

If you draft a player who refuses to sign they need to compensate the team that drafted them somehow. Maybe the player carries a million in cap space per season for the original team that drafted them until they reach ufa status. Maybe the team that eventually signs them gives up their next first round pick.

This is continuing a dangerous trend. It’s making the NHL Draft irrelevant and showing draft picks that they can be free agents from jump street. Could you imagine if all the top draft picks in baseball decide that they want to play for the Yankees and Dodgers? The owners need to agree that there is only one way for a player to enter the league and that is through the team that drafts them.
