If repair costs are so low, why are all the insurance companies jacking up EV insurance costs across the board. If this is not addressed, it will hinder the adoption of ev's.
@gdunton1
@gdunton1 20 күн бұрын
Mostly because Tesla requires you use Tesla authorized shops to repair, parts are more expensive, and availability of parts. Been in insurance claims nearly 30 years. It will drop eventually, and quite honestly future concerns for insurance on full automation as it potentially reduces accidents and thus ability to rate risk on persons. Next 5 years of insurance industry will be interesting if ev’s really start to take market share.

If you watch the wham Bam Tesla cam channel you will see how often Teslas are totaled. I don’t know what’s going on and whether this is a lack of maturity in the industry to repair the models, but it absolutely is affecting the insurance cost. My insurance cost went up 40% last year.

Not true. Teslas are not expensive to repair, unless the issue is a battery. We have two Model 3s and they are both the lowest cost of ownership that we have ever had. (I pay more in speeding tickets than I do for Tesla maintenance.)

The way you can tell those German cars are expensive to repair is to try to buy an extended warranty for them. I got rid of my 1999 BMW when I found out it would need a brake job and it would cost about $900, I can only imagine how much it would be today.

Car wash mode keeps the charge port closed, ignore push to open on the cover and disable auto wiper. If you are not in car wash mode, charge port might open after it got pushed by washing brush and port cover might get damaged. Auto wiper might activate and get damage if washing brush is in the way.

RE: carwash mode: when a car is being washed, it isn't in gear (i.e., parked). When the vehicle thinks it's parked and the charge door is swiped, the car thinks you want to charge. When the car is in gear, it knows you don't want to charge and ignores any swipe (e.g. rain, etc.). It's really very simple.

I don’t have a Cybertruck, but I do use crash mode on my other teslas. It’s been really glitchy lately. I’ll click car wash mode as the crash attendant tells me to shift to neutral. The car will go into car wash mode and then jump out. It kinks up all the works in the car wash and everyone freaks out. I’ve been using car wash mode for two years, so it’s not likely user error. But it seems there is a glitch in the software. Almost to the point I’d rather just shift to neutral and not use the mode.

And when about 6 months ago the driver daylight strip went out and got replaced by Tesla. Service experience 10/10. I have to take it in because my driver chair is feeling like it’s loose and stitching is coming undone, my dashboard wood has splints and warping as well and they said that will get replaced at no charge. Definitely quality issues BUT thus far they have taken care of me and I have never had such an amazing service experience like with Tesla. I’m in the Coral Gables location in Miami, FL.

Seems to me the separation between the top cars should be much larger if EV's actually had lower maintenance and repairs... yet Buick and Toyota essentially have the same numbers.. but they are ICE powered and have more complex powertrains systems. It seems to me the EV's should be at least 1/2 the total cost of ANY ICE powered car. BTW.. I also drive an EV now and love it... I was doing an oil change every 5 weeks which sucks. But I had a Toyota hybrid previously that went 425,000 miles, still runs and drives on its original engine trans and hybrid battery.

I've said this to Elon as well but also share it here.... Instead of random price drops, Tesla should work with local electricians to do L2 charger rebates and installs as part of the purchase process. Setup times for someone to come evaluate adding a L2 charger in their garage right through the app, and work with local energy providers on rebates, etc. One of the biggest fears for many people is range anxiety and being unable to charge quickly so making L2 charging a standard practice and part of the buying process will quell a lot of the fears people have and realize how much easier their lives would be with an EV.

Given the other manufacturers cars are almost all ICE cars, Tesla's repair costs are surprisingly high esp in the outer year. This is not indicative of what an EV should be like but part of the Tesla engineering philosophy where you delete any part that won't cause issues in the warranty period but don't care about what happens after that

Car washes are not all created equal. You have brushed car washes and brushless car washes. I think the warning against using Car Wash mode when going through car washes has to do with brushed car washes and the potential damage they can cause to the windshield wiper and other things. Brushless car washes should be fine but you must use the car wash mode

I think that a lot of the "more frequently" comes from overpowered fast cars driven aggressively. I see lots of posts of people getting similar tire life as with their previous gasoline cars, if driven calmly. With my cheapest car Tesla makes (so far), with acceleration set to Chill, I still accelerate faster than about 80% of cars on the road, I find. If you don't need a sports car, skip the Performance versions, set the acceleration to Chill, and drive normally not aggressively. Of course, it's tempting with the peppy acceleration of EVs to drive zippily, but if you can forgo the most absurd levels of acceleration, I think these tire issues, largely aren't.

My Prius will outrun the fastest Tesla in "beast mode" on this road trip from Miami to Leroy Alabama. When you get into rural areas, in addition to the extended charging time, your adding hundreds of miles to your trip. In some rural areas of south Alabama you have to be careful not to allow a car to get low on gas as they don't have a lot of gas stations everywhere, so you can imagine what infrastructure for EV's. The cost of charging Tesla's away from home is almost the same as premium gas.

Tesla is in talks with 1 major automaker - Elon said this a year ago and nothing has happened. Note on its recent earnings call, Mobileye said it had signed or was in advanced negotiations with 14 automakers....I see every major automaker initially going with one or more external players and also doing it in-house. For instance, VW is using Mobileye for Audi and Porsche, doing a single model in China with Huawei, doing 2 models in China with Xpeng, developing its own system in China with Horizon Robotics, and its own system global with Bosch. That is five paths to self-driving in a consumer car and in addition they are doing robotaxis with Mobileye (already testing in multiple cities)

I think there is a seriously critical point that needs to be made as far as Model Y developments and a cheaper Model Y. Realize that the updated Model 3, although cheaper to procure, led to a massive surge in demand which led to price increases when the model 3 was/is even more expensive than the model Y. Anyone expected a cheaper model Y should understand that this will without a doubt happen with a Model Y refresh as well. Production cost going down doesn’t directly correlate to purchase price going down. Surely prices will eventually go down (beginning with Model 3, not Model Y). In the short term this probably just means better products for us and better margins for Tesla. Don’t expect an updated Model Y to be noticably cheaper than current prices for at least a full calendar year or maybe more after an update is even released.

Haven't seen any of your news videos for a while, and it's good to see you're back. :D Your comments on Optimus aren't helpful. You're basically saying "I don't know, I don't know, I don't know", but all I can think is. "you really should". Or not comment. OK, Tesla are the masters of LVM (Large Vision Models). What everybody else has is LLMs (Large Language Models) which are text based. The other guys are adding in visual fantasy, using LLM techniques, but it's like getting a blind person to construct a paint-by-numbers picture. The bins for the pictures have all been labeled, the environments have all been labeled, and the blind man picks them out of the bin and assembles them. Video can be constructed the same way, frame by frame. Tesla's LVM in FSD has an inference engine. It can analyze a real-world scenario and predict what the world around it is going to do next, and it uses that inference engine to decide what the car should do next. Tesla has been working on this since 2015 (my estimate). In 2015, Elon recognized that the only way autonomous driving could ever work was if the program recognized all the visual clues like a human driver. He also realized that Nvidia wasn't going to have the compute horsepower is an chip that would use less than 1 kilowatt per hour, and being a GPU, it still may not have the compute horsepower needed to drive. So Elon began to build the best AI team in the world: the best hardware guys and the best software guys. By the end of 2017, they had the design finalized. Over the next year, they got the chip prototyping, rev 3 board design, and software rev 1 completed (say, by December 2018), started manufacturing and installing the board into the cars, and announced the whole deal in May 2019? Autonomy Day (worth re-watching). We now know, with rev 12.3.5 FSD software, there is no doubt that those design decisions made back in 2015 were pure gold! Nine years later, nobody else is even close! There are millions of Tesla's that are capable of driving themselves. Now look at Tesla's Optimus. Tesla's inference engine for FSD at 12.3.5 would be plenty good enough for Optimus to work in a factory and cope with the variety around him. With an LLM running in parallel, he'd be able to take instructions and move between job roles on a production line. The Rev 3 board has two independent processors on the board, and it would be ideal to run one as a visual processing using and the other as a voice processing unit. Optimus should be able to handle multiple factory tasks and chat with other workers before the end of this year. It looks like the hardware is getting better really fast as well. Tesla could licence all of this technology as well.

The findings come from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration analysis of 956 crashes in which Tesla Autopilot was thought to have been in use. You included some very operative words there... "foreseeable misuse" that means people are misusing and abusing the autopilot system. That's why Tesla now includes interior cameras for the autopilot system to prevent this misuse. That's also why Tesla isn't held liable for any of these crashes. Because Tesla didn't actually cause any of them. This is simmilar to tucking the top strap of your seat belt behind you when you drive. The auto manufacturer isn't accountable for your misuse of the systems. Pay attention when you read news articles because legacy media loves to paint a narrative.
