It probably has more to do with cheaper labor. For example. During the early 2000's, Programming was the #1 degree and pretty much everyone was graduating with it. Since the potential employee pool expanded dramatically, it made sense for companies to fire older employees that had to be continually paid more vs a fresh graduate making starter pay. Every 2 years they would fire their employees and hire new ones to keep overhead down. Its not fair for sure, but thats capitalism... It just means we need a better system or a more regulated one.

They provided transportation on top of it. Between my sports activities and extra classes I went to school in the dark of morning and came home in the dark of evening and I loved it. I worked in engineering R&D for almost 40 years and I worked with many foreign-born engineers, mainly Indian and Chinese. They were hard-working, eager, innovative and quite competent. Many of them were brought here on H-1B visas and were essentially chained to contract houses that worked as their "representatives", who essentially controlled their housing, work schedule and pay rates. They had great educations from their home countries and filled the void for cheap, highly technical personnel in positions that Americans couldn't fill. This amounted to indentured servitude. The contract houses would send these people back to their country of origin upon project completion or when the contract expired, without any chance of applying for US citizenship. I agree that the lack of STEM education in America, coupled with the want of CHEAP, competent technical personnel has definitely help cause this. American industry, coupled with the Republican's war on decent education is doing it's best to exploit foreign labor and not even offer a path to citizenship for these people. And then industry complains about why they cannot get decent 'Murican' help.

I just fail to understand why people actually thought electing billionares and millionaires was going to help them rise out of poverty. These people don't care. You need politicians who are impartial and will enact laws which help the majority of the population, a population which is NOT rich and has other needs than the rich. Politicians should not concern themselves with whether these policies help the rich become richer, but with whether they will help the regular citizen become more educated, have a path to a good paying job that respect human rights, have good health care etc. There is a conflict of interest if you vote into political power rich people

Another reality is that they hire people from India and other countries because they simply pay them less. They can treat them as chattel, and they don't have to outlay for benefits. And here's the difference, while many of us liberals that support policies of Bernie Sanders and other people we use words and try to speak to people and try to discuss things in a cool collected situation the same cannot be said of the ultra right wing. A lot of those people are armed to the teeth and will not hesitate to use those arms. Just saying...

I have been sitting here patiently waiting for this to be a topic for MAGA. I was recently ‘retired’ from the largest consulting company in the world. Most people are not familiar with the name but they are bigger than Deloitte and EY. These companies have been working with the poorest countries for decades to educate and employ these workers for the lowest salaries. I remember in the 90s that American workers were up in arms about how tech was getting offshored. The immigrants that are‘stealing your jobs’ are not who you think and they are making you dumber. Good luck America.

You also have to understand what Ramaswamy and Musk mean by "talent" - they want workers devoted to the corporation, who won't complain about stuff like work / life balance or 60 hour weeks with no overtime. Workers dependent on their corporate sponsor to remain in the country are ideal. Hence, workers here on H-1B visas are automatically more talented.

Because education tells them that the way they grew up is harmful, their feefees got hurt. Add to it that one of those highly educated people was a black man in the White House and they just lost their s..t. No longer content to silently dismantle public education with charters and vouchers, they embraced with full throats the abolition of public education altogether. Just like the swimming pools they were forced to "share" in the 60s, they'd rather shut it all down.

@jsdutky9 күн бұрын
It's not about education, and it never has been. It's about paying less for technical people and having absolute control over your labor force (because the H1b visa is attached to the job, not the worker). American workers are not "too dumb" to do the jobs these billionaires want to hire foreigners for, the just want to be paid what they're worth, and they can leave whenever they want because they don't have to fear deportation if they quit (or get fired). If this were about education you would see lots of H1b workers coming from European countries, and you don't. Instead most H1b workers come from India and China, and it's because the employer gets to pay them less (or gets to skimp on raises, even if they were initially hired at a competitive pay rate, which comes to the same thing in the long run).

There will be another boom for programmers. AI isn't nearly as capable as people think.

If those graduates didn't have exorbitant student debt, they wouldn't need to seek such outsized wages. Student debt is a huge driver of upward wage pressure, which is inflationary. Cheaper/free education= less expensive professional services, including medicine, law, tech & education

Many years ago I watched an interview with Musk speaking on how college was not that important. It was upsetting to see an influencer say such things. A short time later, he did another interview that was held in China. He then for some reason did a 180 and told them how important it was to get an education.. Around all of this, there were many that started to make fun of others in STEM and those learning to code. Was really odd stuff to encounter to say the least.
