Yeah, it's the same with NASA. You can't apply for that job unless you are an actual US citizen, and for some jobs you actually need to be BORN in the US to apply. Truth be told, this is not actually as unreasonable as it may sound. Because corporate espionage is a very real threat, and when we talk about rockets... well, even if it's a civilian rocket, it's still a rocket. It doesn't really matter what payload you put into it - a satellite, an astronaut or a nuke. It'll fly up just as good and deliver the load wherever you need it. So to have such technology exposed to people from other countries - is a real threat, and nobody wants to do that. Space programs of other countries are operating under the same rules, too, so US is not unique here. It sucks when you're an honest engineer who just wants to work on rockets. But that's the price we are paying for security.

@@johnkeller9738 A "green card" is not a work visa. There's no such thing as a work visa anyway. A visa is a document that grants you entry into a country for a specific purpose. Some visas CAN allow you to be eligible to work. You then need to apply for a work permit (EAD) that actually allows you to work in the country. It's typically valid for a year and has to be renewed. A green card status on the other hand does not *expire.* The card does every 10 years but the benefit doesn't. What Musk didn't explain very well is that there are certain jobs ( FBI, Police, some federal or federally contracted jobs such as SpaceX) that are only open to US Citizens!

I think it's a very stupid question and people's reaction to it is stupid too. It's a security risk to hire people that aren't background checked. Tech has always been on the list of other countries espionage groups. They literally try to recruit spies to get all this info. It's a matter of national security.

@@icheko2498 Again, no matter what the question is, it can still be asked. It is the accusatory tone of the question that was the problem.

@@RobGordonJC anyone can ask a question even though it's stupid I agree. But that still doesn't change the fact of how stupid it is. Let's say even if he was allowed to hire from non citizens. It's the right of the owner to hire who he wants. He would be doing a good thing by hiring only Americans. Keeping the jobs in the US, and not act like other greedy companies that just want to pay less. If he decided to go that route.

@icheko how is that too stupid of a question? A journalist's job is to ask questions for the public. There might even a lot of people who has the same question.
@icheko24983 жыл бұрын
@@oldbot64 Nicolas and peeper pointed it out already. The way the question was presented so accusatory makes even more stupid. Also I didn't hear any credentials from the person in the beginning, what makes you think that's a journalist? As to why the question is stupid refere to my answers on top. Reverse journalism isn't a thing by the way, or at least professional ones would have said it letting him know that they understand but just so the crowd knows and on and on. There are many mistakes that a good journalist would not have done here. So I doubt it was one. Unless it was a self proclaimed one. Then no one gives a shit.

Some other nations like Russia and China will keep an eye on you for years to make sure you are not a spy, the US says they don't do this but it's likely they do - they spy enough on their own citizens that you can bet they keep a close eye on non-citizens and new citizens.
