That BBC reporter will be forever defined by this interview, in the same way that Channel 4's Cathy Newman will forever be defined by her "So what you're saying is" interview with Jordan Peterson. Priceless!

It hits harder after I said a few weeks ago "people always wanna beat around the bush & never face a problem head on" like how college students recently wanted Affirmation Action to also apply to their college tuitions. Thinking it's only a certain group of people experiencing hard times... While a big portion of the U.S population is experiencing hard times & not being able to afford to even eat without government assistance! This group of young kids think they're being singled out & need a way to just beat around the bush & not be a part of what lower & middle class America are facing as well... So to speak. "There are no solutions, only trade offs" and by God will the elites do anything for a trade off... if we'll allow it. Keeps up the divide amongst the populous.. maybe even opens new doors to oppression not known yet.

What makes this interview interesting is that it provides insight into how Elon thinks. He is actively engaging with what the interviewer is telling him, rather than panicking and using default responses. Some people go into interviews with certain preparations, and when the interview goes off-book they don't know what to say, or they become apologetic, or they pivot. The reporter was trying to drive Elon into the apologetic space with a blanket accusation, but Elon's response to adversarial questioning was organic, forcing the reporter into submission. It turns out you don't become a rich CEO by being a dummy. Becoming a reporter on the other hand...

What's sad is that Elon is not a highly skilled or trained debater. He's demonstrating some of the most painfully simple, but also, the most neglected rules of debate : 1. Don't argue from emotion. 2. Never resort to made up bullshit. If you don't know what you are talking about, shut up. 3. You can't burn an honest man, so be honest.

Debates work on the premise that neither side has been proven right, so we will go before a panel to see who is. You don't "make up bs" in a debate, you gather information supporting your claim and present it. You want to be as factual as possible, because your opposition will have the chance to refute your claims and being able to catch your opponent in a lie looks great for your argument.

Changing the subject is among the most common tactics I have experienced when having a debate with someone who is not confident in their position. There are lengthy conversations stored deep within the bowels of Facebook Messenger's archives in which I asked someone a question, was met with 3 unrelated objections, I answered each in turn before restating my original question, and was met with 3 new objections, only to repeat the process over the course of a few days before the other person abandoned the discussion, never having answered my original question. I learned a great deal about human nature in those days. I also learned to not debate people on Facebook.

I’ve argued with my fair share of people online, and it’s fascinating how similarly they all argue! A lot of them follow the exact same conversational path and say a lot of the exact same things. They even use the same insults. Quite a few have admitted to me that they’re autistic. That may be part of their rigidity but I think it goes deeper. I wish there were more studies or explanations on their debate “tactics.”

Agreed, it's a completely nonsense idea. You simply cannot, by definition, ever have anything resembling free speech in the world if you're implementing hate speech restrictions. The _entire_ and _express_ purpose of free speech is to protect speech people find - get this - hateful! Or offensive, which is the same thing. How they ever got this past the public is beyond me, but it attests both to peoples apathy and to the effectiveness of propaganda.

It was absolutely inexcusable how Elon Musk was better prepared for this interview than the journalist. Elon likely gets millions of interview requests a year, and lord knows he's an incredibly busy man as it is, but this journalist when making his list of questions (or the BBC editorial board when preparing them for him) looks like they did absolutely zero prep work for what the responses to each question might be and if there would be any questions about the questions going the other way. Zero introspection to if any of the thinly veiled accusations through implication could ever be turned around. This should have been this journalists biggest interview of the year. It was, but for exactly the opposite reason than he wanted.

It's wrong for a reporter to declare speech criminal or invalid, he lists people who have been banned by private organisations, not breaches of the law, being denied service is not the same as guilty as charged. Yet he asserts as it is... Being blocked from Twitter, KZbin or any other business is policy not law. People need to realize policy has nothing to do with law and it's commercial not criminal.

I wouldn't quite agree, but there's definitely no such way to define 'hate speech' legally. There is obviously speech made in a hateful manner, but there's no way of knowing a person's intentions unless explicitly stated, so I agree that you cannot enforce and rule based on 'hate speech'. Misinformation however I think is evidently a real thing. It's just wrong or misleading information... But again, legally, people have the right to get things wrong, so eh...
