My thought process is this really started with the Joe Rogan podcast. They talk about how "elite" these pro gamers are and how unique they are. Joe made it seem like these dudes were Gods amongst a community of peasants. Elon saw an opportunity to excel at something popular, without having to actually do the work, and "flex" on a community he knows little of.
