The richest people in the world obtain majority of their wealth from a single company...
Bill Gates had Microsoft
Jeff Bezos has Amazon
Sam Walton had Walmart - and the Walton family is the today the richest family in the world
With such large stakes in these companies, their net worth grew with the company.
Elon Musk has large stakes in all of his companies. He owns just under 20% of Tesla and around 50% of SpaceX. These are companies looking to disrupt multiple, very important and large industries:
- Automotive
- Energy Storage
- Energy Production
- Battery Technology
- Rocket Technology
- Internet Connectivity
and so much more. Companies like AT&T and Verizon, and Toyota are worth over $200B each. If Tesla and SpaceX can dominate some of the above industries, perhaps it, too can become a multi-hundred billion dollar corporation.
This would also mean Elon Musk's large percent ownership in these companies would turn him into the richest person in the world.

roger white I hate to break your bubble but the reason why he “looses money” is because he doesn’t care about profits he spends all the money on developing the product. It is common knowledge that if you invest all the profits back to the product, in the numbers chart it will look like you’re always losing money. But in reality, you’re not. This is why he has increased the net worth with out gaining anything. For over 10 years he has not used the profits but instead invested them back into this company so every critic will continue to blow to everyone that he’s losing money but they don’t tell you the context behind why he’s losing money. Also the money he makes on the launches and the potential money he will make, the more he continues to develop his rockets will gain him back more money than he would have ever spent. And final, it is not all about the money and even he keeps telling people but that’s how he sees it.

GM sells 150 billion revenue, yet market cap 1/3 of it. GM also has better autonomous driving through cruise than tesla autopilot. So this is why many say tesla has to come down. Good luck.

Even putting Tesla aside, I think SpaceX alone has the potential to put Elon Musk over the top. Once Starship/Super Heavy and Starlink becomes operational, SpaceX will have almost unprecedented capability. Starship could very well create its own launch market with its costs and lift capabilities, enabling companies and agencies to do more than ever before. Starlink will provide massive capability for its cost with relatively low maintenance costs, giving SpaceX a massive financial boost outside of the actual launch market. Those two aspects combined will allow SpaceX to leverage incredible value as a service provider, and I have no doubt that as future opportunities present themselves that SpaceX will be in a prime position to take advantage of them as well. I know Elon has downplayed space mining, but I don't doubt he'd jump on it given the right circumstances involved. In short, SpaceX will almost certainly be a major player in the emerging space industry as industry actually begins taking place in space.

He might but the Winklevoss twins from the Facebook movie will out pace him in 2-5 years. They own 200,000 Bitcoins (BTC) and run Gemini Crypto Exchange. They bought Bitcoin in 2012 around $12 per coin which would have been $2,400,000. Now the price per Bitcoin is moving up and down at around $10,500 per Bitcoin which is $2,100,000,000 total for them. So from 20 Bitcoins at $25 per coin which was $500 in total to 80 Bitcoins today at $10,500 which is $840,000. In 10-15 years of compounding Bitcoins I could literally pass Elon Musk. I can tell you there will be trillionaires soon and there will many people with more money than Elon Musk and they will be pretty young, cause I am 25 and my friends are also in their twenties. You think Elon is inventive and creative lol wait till these people start cashing out and start using their money.

Musk being the richest man on the planet is just icing on the cake. Think of all the changes he initiated (EV, giga cells, boring, etc.) He is going down into the history books as one of the most if not THE most Influential Man of the Century. Even if he suddenly drops everything and just live in his private island resort, he already made such an impact. (Just look at how the legacy car companies are releasing EVs now)
