Make no mistake about China. They are the greatest near peer threat to the US military and the rate that they are advancing their entire force/technology is out pacing the US military capabilities. General Keene is not a war hawk talking about going to war. He’s talking about the strength through deterrence policy the US military may not be able to project due to China advancing beyond our strength because of the lack of congress doing their jobs correctly by passing real budgets and the current administration keeping the DoD budget flat the past 4 years via CRs which hinders the military’s ability to plan and project efficiently or advance our capabilities at the same pace to deter China.
@deegee71339 күн бұрын
Generally speaking, the US spends big on military capability to maintain its empire because it is safer and cheaper than defending itself against the rise of hostile empires that would gladly fill its power vacuum. Whether it is spending its money in an effective way to achieve this is debatable.

5:18 - I don't disagree, he does sound like a warhawk, but he's not necessarily wrong. Munition reserves are at an all-time low, mostly due to the Ukraine "gifts" but that said, there are plenty of ways to refactor (and likely reduce) the existing budget to achieve both goals of recovering defensive capability and funding it by shutting down most of the foreign bases we have.

TBF to this General, he was talking about replacing old systems, not building up systems. And in this tech age, a decade old tech can absolutely cost American lives. So, I am in favor of protecting our troops with the best we can. He is probably right about the ossification of the Pentagon as well. They have played by the same play book for decades, so it makes sense they may in fact be hampered by the unexpected. However, I think we could get much more bang for our buck than what we do currently. We need to get companies that are producing substandard equipment out of the supply chain, and yes that means you Boeing, until they can show they have solved said issues. We should have hard cutoffs for the amount we are willing to spend on a new tech, so if it goes over the original budget, the company has to complete no matter what , and the US will cut off adding funds to to like 10% more at most, instead of million dollar projects costing billions. It will cost something to end the wars in Ukraine and Israel. I want that cost to not be human lives, and then after that to be as cheap and effective as possible. We do have to keep our defenses strong in the face of China and others, we are currently the world police and we all benefit from that with shipping lanes that afford us the world as our marketplace, and the safety of our members, such as you, to travel world wide. That has both a cost and a value. I am not an isolationist or a noninterventionist. I am, however, a don'[t start new wars unless it is necessary. And there are wars that are necessary. Let's say a large group of Americans were taken hostage in Iran, it would be worth risking war to get those people back.

I'm always in favor of talking instead of fighting. If Musk can get a feel for where these people are at and relay that to Trump, that's a good thing. Those talks must happen and any effort that helps facilitate that is beneficial. Our defense budget is only roughly 3% of our GDP. It has been MUCH higher in the past. We don't need more or less %, we just need it dedicated to better things. That being said, an economic revival would increase our GDP, which (if the % stays the same) would increase our defense budget along with it.

The last thing I want to see is another war. That said we do need to spend more on our defense. Our ICBM's are very outdated and the military is working to replace them and that program is delayed costing more. Then there is the next generation fighter to replace the F-22 has had to be shelved because of the cost over runs on the ICBM program. We are also working in a new bomber and if you dont think we need that just look at the B-52. She is still flying missions with crews that could be the grandchildren of the original crew. We are behind the ball with our naval vessels and seriously outnumbered by China. This is mostly with surface vessels but our submarine fleet is also very low at this point in time. Then there are the wepons systems we took from current use to give to Ukraine to the tune of hundreds of billions. Our strategic reserves of oil have been drained to lower gas prices and it needs to be replenished Then just the numbers of troops we have are very low. We need more boots out there to be prepared to defend the nation. The way to do this is to give the military a better pay raise to make the military more attractive to kids in high school and college. Military bennifits have also been greatly depleted over the decades. At one point both the member and there Dependents were able to use all medical facilities on post to include optometry and dental. The Healthcare for Dependents was covered 100%. Now they need to pay for medical insurance. Then retirement, we use to have full bennifits for our family (spouse) for life. We were allowed to use medical faculties on post for life. None of these bennifits are in existence. Once a retired soldier reached the age of medicare they are kicked out of tricare and forced to take medicare.

Thank you for that dose of reality, I am also not a war hawk, quite the contrary, but I have been around long enough and have common sense to understand that this has to be a priority if we have any hope of avoiding major conflicts, peace through strength. Otherwise, the bullies are running things, it’s basic. The people, voters, just have to keep Warhawks out of positions of power, whose knee jerk reaction is military action. Teddy Roosevelt’s US foreign policy of diplomacy “speak softly and carry a big stick” is another case study. I think we can spend LESS and still bulk up the military for a "peace through strength" approach. Most of all we need willing personnel more than anything else. Then we need to stop foolishly holding on to ww2 gen warfare machinery which is costly, it's the most lobby captured element of the military industrial complex, and it's just a waste since these huge ships can be taken out by drones. By having MAD in place between nuclear countries, we don't actually see a likely conflict beteeen these nations anyway. Since Vietnam, almost every conflict that became a forever war, was due to asymmetrical warfare being so difficult from the MORE traditional military struggling against guerrilla forces in complex terrain including cities. I can go on but lastly hearing AOC refer to Tulsi Gabbard as "pro war" which is either pure propaganda or a genuine inability to understand the way Tulsi is capable of articulating that she truly understands international politics and uses a realpolitik lens but uses her pragmatic pacifist sensibilities as her guiding principals. Because she can SEE the paths to the most dangerous conflicts, she knows exactly how to avoid them. And her views on SYRIA were actually one of the only decent takes by anyone at the time. So by avoiding conflicts of course we save money and lives. These are things we need to focus on to reform the pentagon, DEF NOT throwing more bloated contracts at the same companies for more things we don't need which only lines the wrong pockets and kills taxpayers.

Considering that there are a significant amount of countries that hate the US, having a good deterrence in all those regions and top-of-the-line information gathering seems like a no-brainer. There is also China's economic problem and imperialistic tendencies that should be worrying if the US pulls back. If Taiwan is taken, the chip manufacturing will cause a massive issue for US and their allies. I think the big thing for the US is to spend its money wisely and be effective diplomatically. If you are only seen as a bulldozer, bully and a murdering machine, you won't win hearts and minds, which I think you desperately do both domestically and abroad. Linked with that, I think Iran has some good voices that could turn that country around with the right backing, and a diplomatic mission with the other Arab countries would make a massive difference. If Elon Musk can build up good will through getting Starlink all over Iran or talk about other kinds of trade, I'm all for it.
