@@toomanyaccounts there are answers to that question. Not particularly good answers, but still. 1. Tesla needs to fund the development of a robotaxi, and selling cars is one way of doing it. 2. Selling cars is still a business model in case the robotaxi doesn't get approved by the evil regulators for a few more years. 3. They need your driving data to train the algorithm. These of course imply that when the issues get resolved and the robotaxi is fully operational, Tesla will stop selling cars.
@danieljohnkirby94129 ай бұрын
Another problem occurred to me, there are already businesses that operate fleets of cars they don't have to drive, they're called rental car companies, and guess what, they flip their entire fleets over every 2 years. So if you had a "robotaxi" Tesla in your garage would you have to flip it every 2 years due to wear and tear? Like Hertz isn't flipping their fleet because of the wear and tear caused by the dude sitting in the passenger seat, it's because of just normal wear and tear on a car being in service 24/7/52 and having lots of different people who don't give a shit about whatever damage they do to it.

I think that's entirely up to an opinion of what's difficult. Factory 400 is kind of a nihilist. It's not that it's hard, it's just the regulatory bodies haven't been doing their jobs. Anyone else couldn't have burned up a wildlife preserve, but for whatever reason our capitalist brained government won't even hold the same rules in on Elon that they would on others. Where is Tesla gonna get $250B for that? On top of that they need people to go around with the vehicles to collect the data that is required to solve autonomy. In a traditional vehicle, I max out around 13 or 14 hours. This may also be because the stops to recharge force you to take 30 minute breaks. As for the taxi - *WHEN* it gets into a collision, that vehicle is out of commission for 3 months if you're lucky, typically closer to 4 or 5 months. Someone hit my front bumper/headlight on the passenger side in FEBRUARY, I finally have my service appointment at a tesla certified collision repair shop next week. I called every shop in the state, no one could do under 3 months. And you know tesla roadside assistance will be making a killing off these robo-taxis... The giveaway is how he gazes off into space to make some time-frame or cost estimate - "welll.. maybe... let's say.. 6 months/$20,000/etc". Was that a projection he was trying to remember, or that he was making up on the spot? You choose.

Nice, calm presentation. I cannot help but wonder: Musk isn't even a good liar, it's easy to see when he makes something up (which happens a lot).

Boy, I could start with a Tesla Taxi and use it to deliver merchandise from Amway! Look out, Warren Buffet!

I think that the only parts that not only can be safely removed from self-driving Teslas, but also should be, must be the wheels!

The biggest problem I can see with these robo taxis would be saturation of the market with more robo taxis than people that need one. So wouldnt musk just be better off with his own feelys of cars, and not bother selling any?
@Teslafan95197 ай бұрын
That's probably what they're going to do in the future once they have fully solved autonomy it won't make sense to sell any vehicles. Majority (80-90% of Americans) will most likely transfer to TAAS (transport as a serivce) and save $5000-6000 / household / year. You'll need a massive fleet to satisfy the demand.

Don’t these cars need charging stations? Electricity to charge the cars costs money, right? Or am I missing something?
@bennettftomlin Жыл бұрын
Yes they need electricity, Elon's quoted profit number was "after all overhead" which would include charging
@vylbird8014 Жыл бұрын
Funny thing... there are a few places here in the UK, supermarkets with heaps of electric car charging points - and every single one of the points in the car park covered with an 'out of order' sign. They aren't out of order, exactly. It's economic factors. Back before Putin screwed up the energy market the supermarkets started offering free charging, because it cost very little to charge a car and the offer lured in customers who would then go into the shop and come back laden with purchases. The chargers are not the fastest, so the car wouldn't charge full anyway. Then the cost of electricity went up, a /lot/. So that free giveaway was suddenly looking rather expensive, and the chargers weren't fitted with the equipment to charge for the electricity. So someone just had to go throw the big off switch and put up out-of-order signs.

Oh yeah? Do you have a robotaxi?
@hibudy4 ай бұрын
@@bennettftomlin youtube will be censoring my comments, probably at the direction of US gov they also have no option other than Tesla otherwise the ev market is mostly gone to China with it massive data collection and employment opportunities. And most of the fanbois have their life saving invested in Tesla. So they've to keep up the cult of musk and his promises. So you'll see they're batting for him all day because their livelihood depends on it. It's all insanity and mutual interest budy.

The US state with the highest proportion of Tesla cars is California, but this flood of 'super-safe' cars doesn't seem to have resulted in a decline in auto fatalities. Also, if robotaxis are so profitable, it would far more sense for Tesla to keep the cars and have exclusive use of the service themselves. It's like people trying to sell you their secret 'get rich quick' investment strategy. If it works, why aren't you sat on your yacht in the Bahamas instead of being sat on the phone telling me how I can share in your success?

If his claims were true, why wouldn't Tesla just run its own fleet and NOT SELL THE CARS? That seems like the best way for them to make the maximum money.

I don't think that your model accounts for several important variables such as: 1. Maintenance costs 2. Depreciation 3. Infrastructure (your own charging stations, parking lots, etc) 4. Finite amount of customers 5. Decrease in cost of fares due to oversupply of robotaxis 6. Finite supply of robotaxis 7. Insurance, taxes, etc There are many other variables aside from this. Nonetheless, the point is that you cannot keep on reinvesting for new robotaxis. There will be a point where the incurred costs will outweigh the potential revenue from extra cars.
@bennettftomlin5 ай бұрын
Wrong! Almost all of these are accounted for: 1. Elon said profit. 2. We do not consider asset value so depreciation is irrelevant. 3. Later models do include features to model. 4. Sure of course there's a limit, that's why we have the exponential backoff numbers. 5. Once again, there is a term that accounts for this. 6. The entire point is to emphasize that the numbers provided yield nonsencial results. 7. Elon said profit.
