This is coming from a man who keeps replacing human workers with robots. Why doesn’t he help workers earn a living wage so they can afford children.

Thank goodness Elon Musk has commented on Korea's population problem. Korea was not aware it this issue at all. /s
@t.j.5044Ай бұрын
This is happening all over the world. China had 41 births per 1000 people in 1950. It dropped to 7.6 births per 1000 people in 2021. The USA is at it's lowest rate since 1979. Canada's birthrate has been falling for over 15 years, with last year reaching a record low of 1.26 births per woman. By the year 2100, 97% of countries will have a birthrate too low to sustain population size over time. This is what happens when folks start realizing this world isn't good enough for their children.

Thank you for another interesting video. While the population decline in South Korea is concerning, it is not insurmountable. There are many things the government can do to produce well paying jobs outside the major cities where life is more affordable and the conditions are healthier for children. I hope that happens. In the meantime, you are getting married soon, so you can definitely help the population growth😂🤣

The population of Korea is mostly Korean right now. I wonder if the next generations will include more immigrants from other countries. At any rate, I agree that this is a unique time in Korea’s history, and change is inevitable.

They aren't going to let immigrants in.
@Laerrus999Ай бұрын
Not likely. Back in the mid-2000's most Koreans were not interested in dating foreigners, I doubt this sentiment has changed much in the past 20 years. Considering this and other cultural reasons, it will be very important for their government to provide some kind of assistance and/or resources to encourage families to bear and raise children.
@t.j.5044Ай бұрын
By the year 2100, it is expected that 97% of countries will have birthrates too low to sustain population size over time. It would seem the world needs to be a better place to raise children for things to head in the opposite direction.

Korea's fairly xenophobic. Blood is what matters. The next generation will likely comprise the same mix of immigrants who will not be Korean, ever. Immigration is not going to be the solution to Korea's population crisis.

This is so sad to hear. I’m hoping that some initiative will be taken to ensure that this doesn’t happen. I’d hate to see such a wonderful country and culture slowly decline and die because priority and solutions weren’t taken to prevent this problem. This is indeed very serious.

Perhaps Elon Musk’s observations and your videos are just what is needed in order to kick start some serious thinking about the future of S. Korea. I can’t imagine that the problem will not be solved once the problem is faced up to and the more it is highlighted and openly discussed the sooner that will happen. Korea is such a shining example of change, dynamism and innovation it is bound to overcome this problem and in doing so show the rest of the world what needs to be done. Thank you for that clear and concise explanation of the problem, my own country has a population problem but in the reverse direction in terms of numbers and that is equally frightening😟.

I think any economic system that heavily depends on population growth should be seriously scrutinized. The planet can only hold so many people, and the more the global population grows the faster we precipitate an ecological catastrophe. Some amount of population decline might be a good thing, unless we want a planet with more poverty, more disease, and less personal space.

We Poles have our own correspondent in Korea, the channel "Pyra w Korei". It so happens that she is about to give birth to her first child, but earlier she did a material on a similar topic and talked about old campaigns promoting smaller families, she even showed posters related to it, so we can say that Koreans have become victims of their own obedience to top-down orders, which in turn results from Confucianism. KOREAŃCZYCY... NIE CHCĄ MIEĆ DZIECI? O dramatycznej sytuacji w Korei Południowej

Yeah, I've also watched it. It was a good video of her, with analysis of various causes of such low birth rate there. By the way, there's also a KZbin channel of a South Korean living since many years in Poland - "Kim jestem - Koreańczyk w Polsce" (it's a family channel) - and they have three kids, so above average (also above the Polish average, being currently at about 1,47).

I believe the mind set of the society of Korean needs to change. Aldo Korean is a homogeneous country. But as the world changes everything doesn’t stay the same. So if the people of Korea and the government is open to diversity of other ethnicities in the country. It would help in increasing the population. There a many countries with many different ethnicities. Look at the USA many different ethnicities but all American. So it Korea would except that being Korean is not based on looks but the fact that ur born in the country of Korea. Them people from countries would live there and help populate the country.
@hazelnut3794Ай бұрын
In a country with a nationality and identity like Koreans, it is easy to implement pro-immigration and multicultural policies centered on Muslims, various Southeast Asian, and running away Chinese people who have many demands without any intention of accepting the culture of other countries, creating a situation like the second France and Germany. If that happens, I can guarantee you that Seoul will probably fall into one of the worst security cities in Asia, regardless of its development level, within a few decades.

There needs to be more support for mothers that want to raise their children. Still too many babies born in South Korea are being adopted to foreign countries. Quite some Adopko’s and Kyobo’s are moving to Korea. And I still have not seen any robots delivering packaged at any hotels in the UK, but I have seen it in Korea.

Elon Musk has a self importance complex that is only surpassed by Donald Trump. Maybe he should stick to concentrating on South Africa and keep his thoughts on other countries to himself. I'm sure South Korea is quite aware of their population challenges and doesn't need him commenting on their internal issues.

My country's birthrate was going to be lower than the deathrate so we greatly expanded immigration. I have no judgement on that but it seems to have worked (not crazy but somewhat). For me, less people is not a bad thing given the environment. Globally we have more people alive today than have ever died in all of history. Although I do like young people and kids it seems there are still so many without food or homes out there. It would be nice to try to figure out how to take care of them before worrying too much about declining birthrates.

It seems all the talk these days is only about the super low fertility rates. I think sometime fairly soon, the talk will need to shift a lot more to the aging society. Korea became an aging society in 2000.(7% of the country is 65 or older) It became "aged" in 2017, 14% of pop is 65 or older. Korea becomes super aged on 2025. That is, 20% of the total population is 65 or older. and is to rise further to 30% in 2036 and over 40 percent in 2050. Preparing for the coming geriatric society will be key to the success or failure of Korea in 2067(I think moreso than focusing on birthrate). In 2045 Korea will have 37% of people 65 years or older vs. Japan at 36%. So korea will surpass Japan as the oldest country in the world. Feels weird to be saying that. Do the stats lie?
