Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, which may actually be asteroids captured by Mars's gravity. Lower gravity up and down to orbit, and if you mine on Phobos or Deimos deliveries could go straight from orbit to Earth, no large "lifting" costs.

This dissertation glosses over the vast majority of the challenges of settling Mars. There isn't sufficient oxygen and no food - Grow plants that produce oxygen and provide food. The soil is toxic so food plants would not be edible. Water is present but what will it take to obtain sufficient amounts for all of the needs? At the low end, 300 to 500 plants would be needed per person however this doesn't take into consideration the CO2 produced by one person. Likely closer to 700 plants per person and that requires a lot of space and water. Tera forming? If we can turn a hostile environment into a life sustaining environment, wouldn't we simply do that right here on earth? Fundamental oversight on the problems faced- We have hostile environments right here on earth that are not settled. Antarctica, the deep deserts, under the oceans to name a few. At best we visit those environments for short periods of time. Why aren't they settled? Mainly cost to sustain such a permanent settlement with little or no return on the dollar and these are in our back yard, not tens of millions of miles away. The thought put forward is recovery of cost through mining either on Mars or on asteroids. Really? When will that be possible and profitable enough for any company to invest the capital to fund settling Mars? I don't think any board of directors would accept, "We'll spend billions of dollars to establish a permanent settlement on Mars in the hope that we MIGHT realize a profit in 100 years." These are just scratching the surface of the challenges faced when contemplating settling on Mars. The thought of creating a permanent settlement on Mars is very romantic and even exciting but not very practical.

We could sort out most of problems for Mars with radioactive isotope thermal generators, as with them essentially you could provide all the energy the colony/outpost could ever need, and probably more.. electricity, heating, light for plants and even transportation using electric motors.. also, after a while you could build a refinery, where hydrogen & oxygen would be extracted via electrolesis, once again using same generator.. oxygen used by people, whilst hydrogen for rocket fuel, as well as fuel for transportation on the surface.. maybe engineers could develope hydrogen engine that could be used for flying.. As far as habitats, initially majority of structures SHOULD be underground, especially parts where people will sleep, eat and relax.. also preferably most workplaces, such as labs, communication unit, hospital, food storage, etc.. structures that you might put topside would be either experiments, to see how much radiation penetrates through protection, or short-duration stays.. this measures should be used at least untill people know beyond doubt what they're dealing with.. once you have extended & interconected underground habitat, consisting of multiple air-tight modules, that's when you can start building more and more surface structures.. probably most would need to be encased in thick layer of regholith.. and growing food would have to be done in artificial lighting..

people say we should look after this planet first We need to move the mass population here to other worlds to give the earth time to reset itself. Surely someone hasn''t worked out a mathematical equation as to optimal earth population, with western consumption. I have heard from sources that it is in the vicnitity of 1 billion. If everone wants to live like a westerner and they do, then we will need the resources of five planet earths to sustain that. We are in for a big shitfight if we don't start relocating people soon.
@chrisbraid29074 жыл бұрын
The presumption that Earth will reset itself is wrong. leaving the planet and trying to let it recover would take massive resources putting the planet in worse shape. Move everyone to western Australia (There is plenty of room to redesign accommodation and good land for food production) and let the rest of the planet get on with assisted healing. Bonus : you don't risk travel through SUPER RADIATION and Western Australia will become the Biggest developed Cosmopolitan Society. Why there? well they are quite a cosmopolitan State .... Maybe we will do so well that everyone will stay and live in peace. An interesting thought, what say we leave all the Arabs and Moslem in the Middle east to look after themselves ....

The reality is that having a settlement on Mars in the next decade is currently an outlandish idea. Space X is getting ahead of themselves. This operation needs much more planning and much more participation from much more personnel. Before we can even think about living there we need to have a reconnaissance team scout out all the potential starting points for the creation of a new civilization. And before that, the team or teams need to receive the appropriate training to be able to carry out the mission, and before that we have to figure out how to train them, what they beed to be trained on, how to acquire and pay for training equipment and material, and so on, and so on. There is SO much more thought that needs to be put into all of this.

Can't move "hundreds of millions of people", can one? No, not really. What you can do is watch them die. Mars missions are all academic until there is a decent base on the Moon, providing a fall-back position, a base outwith the gravity-well of the Earth. Hey ; I love Elon Musk as much as the next person who wants to see a proper manned space-programme, but a spot of truth here would go a long way. I can't say to people, "Oooh, yeah, a mission to Mars, what a swell idea...etc. etc.!", because it isn't a swell idea unless there already exists a base in space. A temporary base on one of the Martian "moons" would be nice too, since we're dealing with fantasia...providing a radio relay-link, and another base outside of the Martian atmosphere and gravity-well. IMO.

Someone please explain to Elon Musk that according to scientists there isn’t enough CO2 trapped beneath the Martian surface to ever be able to terraform it as he plans. He wants to explode nuclear bombs at the poles which is a waste of time and money since there simply isn’t enough CO2. Where will he buy these nuclear bombs and what if the rocket crashes and burns on the launchpad! Imagine how much nuclear waste will be spread far and wide! It happens! And the Earth’s atmosphere is 21% Oxygen. Mars ‘atmosphere’ has only a very tiny fraction of that amount of Oxygen, just 0.17%. And there’s no magnetic field on Mars to shield life from dangerous solar radiation. Any colonists to Mars will all be dead within just 2 years due to radiation poisoning. And they’ll arrive there already sick from radiation poisoning they received on the long trip from Earth. Musk and Bezos should stop wasting $Billions on a fantasy that will never work and spend that money here on Earth by building massive new solar and wind farms, planting Billions of new trees and cleaning up our Oceans in an effort to save this Beautiful Planet from destruction from the humans!

Ancient texts, like the Indian Mahabharata and the Mayan Popol Vuh, tell us that the Earth suffers from a cycle of seven natural disasters. Those disasters are causing massive floods, earthquakes, firestorms and a bombardment of meteors every few thousand years. By the same event, the planet Mars is even more frequently bombarded with meteors. So Mars is certainly not a good shelter for a next civlization, after we have destroyed the Earth. On the Earth, these disasters create a cycle of civilizations. One of these civilizations lives more than 10,000 years and reaches a higher level of knowledge and skills than we have now. Their civilization ended 20,000 years ago because of the next recurring disaster. To learn much more about the cycle of civilizations, recurring floods, and ancient high technology, read the eBook:"Planet 9 = Nibiru". Search for: invisible nibiru 9
