To add some additional notes for tumblr, it's actually not just the adult content ban being slightly reworked that tumblr's done well. It got bought by the people who own/run Wordpress, and they decided to work on it with the intention of just making it sustainable, rather than trying to make it the next facebook/twitter. Part of this was they've been working on models that allow for users to be the consumer rather than the product, and honestly I'm a huge fan. They've also made major improvements to how the site works without changing anything drastically. They're honestly doing a great job at being a good social media site, and I think it will pay off as people get sick of twitter. Like, everything else aside, Tumblr is currently the only major social media site where you can pay 5$ a month to the site directly to get an ad-free experience (with an option to reenable ads if you want to see them, because that was legitimately a requested feature). They also let you spend small amounts of money (3$) to give someone dashboard crabs for a day. And currently, you can pay 8$ to get two verification checkmarks that "may turn into crabs". Tumblr has never had any system of verification, and also does not place a limit on how many checkmarks you may buy. I currently have 4. It's hilarious. Personally, I've seen a /lot/ of new and returning tumblr blogs. It's not a for-sure thing, but I think that as twitter goes down the hole, tumblr's gonna pick up a lot of their users.

I think there was a missed opportunity in talking about the Eli Lilly "Insulin is now free" impersonation / troll tweet that caused the $LLY stock to drop from $370 to $345. If Elon wants to charge to allow people to become verified that could be fine, but you have to make it so that maybe you have to submit ID or some kind of proof of being a notable figure. He implemented this in the absolutely worst way possible. It was rolled out so quickly that there clearly wasn't enough consideration into not only if it should be added, but what the best way(s) to do it is. Even just giving paid users a black & white check mark would have been so much better, but for better or worse there needs to be a difference between notable people / companies/ figures and Garry from down the road

When someone has a ton of money, people love to assume that they're 1) Highly intelligent, and 2) Hard workers. Both of these things are not true. As for verification: If a company is going to provide verification, then THEY MUST ENGAGE IN THE ACT OF VERIFICATION. As far as I can tell, Elon Musk wanted to pander to his fanbase's weird sense of grievance about the evil blue checkmarks that lived rent free inside their heads for the past few years. For some reason some people think that the fact that *they* care way too much whether someone has a verified account or not must mean that *everyone* cares that much, and then assumed that that includes Twitter, and that Twitter must be giving those people special perks. An important note on Tumblr: It banned pron because Apple got involved. This was because Tumblr had no moderation and ‘underage material’ appeared on it. So they tried to nuke all content, but Apple then Google marked the app as 17+, which tanked their ads. Tumblr only began to get their moderation under control 2021, and are hoping to make a comeback.
