Because human time is not as perfect as a metronome or a drum machine, and that adds character. Being sloppy and unable to play is one thing, but what you mention is a whole other thing, and it's true what it adds; the human factor. Most "extreme" metal drummers these days are so busy trying to achieve the elusive 300 BPM that they are losing the groove and human feel in their playing and relying on triggers to the point where you may as well have a drum machine ticking away in the background. Couldn't agree with you more, here.

Playing at that intensity, CONSISTENTLY ...is AMAZING. it's not just hitting hard and being in shape..just hitting hard doesn't make drums sound good.. its how you hit em (and tuning).. but ya, being able to finesse everything (like this guy does) while basically being in the boxing ring (drumming like this is like all out brawling).. it's no joke. Obviously his chops, ability, musicality on drumkit is top notch.. But honestly.. I've never seen this guy lose a smidgen of the intensity during songs/sets. Consistently hitting each drum/cymbal just right, ALL WHILE BLAZING SADDLES.
