Elsa is a Problem. Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 6 Review/Analysis

Elsa is overpowered. Here's my thoughts on Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 6, or "Re:Zero Episode 31".

The Roswaal Mansion is under attack by Elsa and a large mabeast called the Guiltylaw. Frederica gets naked and enters her beast form to fight Elsa, but still dies. Ram is currently fighting the Guiltylaw. Petra is killed by the collapsing roof, and Subaru manages to survive Elsa's attack after being saved by Beatrice. It's unknown whether or not Rem is still alive. Basically, it looks like Subaru is going to have to start a new loop.
This episode wasn't as good as the previous few, but it wasn't bad by any means. There was a lot of light novel material to adapt, so it felt a slight bit rushed, but that's not a big deal. This was also the first episode that was animated from home, so luckily the animation doesn't seem to be suffering in quality.

I have to disagree, I thought the scene with Petra's arm was good. They hint at it earlier in the episode when Subaru notes that Petra has an identical clothe on her wrist. Also, the scene with Subaru extending his hand to help Petra up spotlights his new found determination to ensure her and everyone else' safety. When Subaru realizes what happened he is struck with profound dejection. Despite the scene being shown through Subaru's concussed perspective, I did not struggle to identify the hand with the white clothe. I actually really liked the shots they used following the cave in; but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

For me it was the best episode for season 2. It was so chaotic, too much stuff happening yet it was in order and organize. I like that duality. Plotwise is so chaotic, so messy. Execution of the episode was clean and so orderly. I think its hard to make episodes like this and be good, because when the plot demands chaos, you cannot just be purely chaotic with the execution. In order to express it, in fact I think you have to have the most order to express how chaotic something is, which is very hard.

Give Subaru some slack. He offered to do the trials himself because there was no time to wait for Emilia to get her sht together. Subaru was weighing whether or not confronting Elsa but she later had the mabeast user support plus beatrice doing almost nothing that made it all a massacre. A comeback from both Elsa and the mabeasts is intriguing because they appear to be hired and it makes you think again about the events of s1.

Didn't know that they did this from their home. Now to my main point: The scene with Subaru saying that he would like to deal with the Trail. I actually liked that one. While it may seem bad from the outside perspective it was a moment for me where Subaru has shown some growth. He could have gone about it in a better way, yes. The thing here though is that while he may be hurting Emilia, he can't back down now. This is much more important than the Royal Selection or how Emilia feels about this. People that Subaru cares about are in danger and he has to stop them because he knows that nobody else will without his intervention. It will hurt Emilia but the pressure is on for my guy. He can't be considerate for Emilia in this situation. It shows his way of "I'll take care of it like I always have", just like episode 14 i believe? The episode in which Emilia booted him of the team while he was lying in bed, but it also showed me that while he cared for Emilia, he still has to do what he has to do and sacrifices have to be made somewhere.

This is an interesting note from the Greed IF story (a story the author wrote which details an alternate timeline): Elsa ends up in a near-dead state, and Subaru drags her to safety, saving her life. She recognizes him as her new employer and starts carrying out jobs for him (like murdering Witch Cultists). I really loved this episode, personally it was the best for me out of the 2nd season so far. I wasn’t really expecting Elsa to even show up yet, but when she did and the action started I was beyond hype AND then the POV shot hit and I was just left speechless. And if I couldn’t get any more impressed drill loli popped up at the last second and we got a really good cliffhanger. After this episode I was still thinking that Frederica still could have been a traitor since we saw signs of everyone else’s death like with ram’s hair thing and Petra crushed but no sign of Frederica being killed and Elsa didn’t have a scratch on her, but that could just be because of how powerful she is. I could just be reaching. Anyways, I was left very impressed this week!

Note: I have not read the novel After all that happened something piqued my curiosity, why is Elsa here in the mansion to kill Subaru? I think many would agree after the last episodes that Roswaal was the one who rented it but why this time? You remember when Roswaal said that “I personally let these events happen”, and he justified his reasons that would support Emilia in the royal elections and that would contribute to making Subaru a knight to her and that he was confident of Subaru's success, but what would benefit him from sending Elsa to kill Subaru in the mansion. The only explanation is that he wants Subaru to defeat her for some reason, but what will result from that, based on the current situation, we have seen how Subaru failed to confront Elsa despite Ram and Frederica's presence with him, and here there remains one person, which is Beatrice, who remained guarding the library and never tried to protect anyone except Subaru at the end. This episode leads me to conclude that Roswaal's goal in this plot is to get Subaru to make a contract with Beatrice or something like that because that's probably the only way Subaru has to defeat Elsa. Remember in previous episode when Ram tell Subaru that Roswaal said: turn to Beatrice and tell her this”Roswaal said to ask the question” and everything will change. “Sorry for bad English ☹️”

The web novel, more often than not, acts as a draft to any work, where it is first adapted into a light novel that focuses less on the world building and small details and more on the overall plot and main characters in the story. From there it becomes much more likely to have an higher level of adaptation (anime, live action, game.) due to having more coherent and focused plot-line and character arcs.

Come to think of it, you're absolutely right. I can't think of an actual bad episode. Watched the series again from the beginning with a friend leading up to the start of the second season. She only intended on watching the first 3 episodes; ended up going to bed around episode 9. Basically every episode ended with, "WTF?! I need to know more! One more episode!" I used to make jokes about how Elsa had trouble letting things go in the first season, but now I see that it's an actual character trait, not just a joke.

@@syfiza No it's literally just the original work which, as I said, is basically a draft. It is still being written (I think) and has the basic outline of the series, but many things right from the very first arc were changed once the editor discovered it and wanted to publish it, and worked with the author to make it a better story, and to help realise his original vision better. Thus, the LN is the complete version, and it is what the anime follows, which the author also helped with extensively. When I say complete of course I don't mean it's finished or anything though, I just mean it's the definitive, "true" version. In particular, the season 2 content is waaaay different than the WN, and in most people's eyes improved, which speaks to the idea that the LN is superior. I mean it would be, since it's a rewrite with the help of an editor.

I read the ln and it was very confusing for me too ep 6 start at chap 78 but after that there's many conversation with other character and finally Subaru comes back to the mansion without Ram. So my question is, did the anime diverge from the ln or did I miss something ?

@@AB-dd4jz my guess is that the anime wants to cut down on deaths so it can fit arc 4 in a season, since a lot happens in arc 4. To cut a lot of stuff out they'd have to reorder some important plot points to make subaru coming to the point where he is able to break through fate and stop dying feel believable. That's what i think is happening atleast

Anyway, it means the plot might be changed a little bit, ok, that's interesting because even with the story of the ln we will still be surprised when things like that will happen.

As an anime only I think that episode was a 10/10. In my opinion. I don't really know of the pacing in the light novels, but I think this episodes pacing was pretty on point. Also about the whole "censorship" thing, I'm pretty sure it was just for dramatic effect rather than censor it. I mean we have a first person pov of Subaru right as he gets thrown through a damn window, with blood covering his eyes. It was distorted for us because it was distorted for him, and it took a second to realize he was holding Petra's disembodied arm, which is why the rag was on her hand. It was set up to completely surprise us and Subaru at the same time. PURE IMMERSION I was in a full state of shock when I saw that was Petra's arm. I was tense the whole scene. The last episode set a huge bar, and I think this one succeeded. I'm super excited for the next episode! Sorry if this was a long read Echidnut. Have a good day until next episode. The suffering finally continues.
