Best boy Otto saves Subaru! Here's my thoughts on Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 7, or "Re:Zero Episode 32".

After Beatrice saves Subaru from Elsa, he finds out she's the owner of a Witch Cult Gospel, just like Betelgeuse. After an emotional conversation between Subaru and Beatrice, Elsa walks in and kills Subaru. After using Return By Death, Subaru is thrown in prison by Garfiel. Three days later, Otto rescues him and establishes himself as Subaru's friend.
I still think Episode 4 was the best episode of Season 2 so far, but this episode comes close and is obviously a 10/10 in my opinion. Re:Zero Season 2 needs to be anime of the year.

To be fair Leo, Subaru was a stranger and punched him (whilst revealing the huge whale was following them because of him). Otto saw him as a crazy stranger and threw him off because of that- which he obviously seemed to experience mental turmoil for, considering how Otto seemed to go crazy after. Doesn’t completely excuse it of course, as he definitely sent him to his death, but I see why he did it.

Another weakness would be his lack of control over the “checkpoints”. This creates the constant fear of never knowing what event may be set in stone which was shown in his interaction with Beako this episode

@zalost of integrity Sry for possible bad eng: Well I am an anime only but I also saw the if-storys. However...i am 99% sure that, not even in the LN, his power got explained. You have an interesting Theorie and it could be right, but i don't think it's the case . Think about what happend after the first arc: He died in his sleep, with no regrets (he made some friends, had a date with his waifu and was more than happy with his current position) he died in his sleep and and had no pain so he died 'with no regrets' But there is this other theory: We know it's the power of the jealous witch who looks simila to Emilia. Every Reset helped Emilia so far: Arc1: she survived and met Subaru Arc2 let the Village survive so they started to trust her more/possible ally And so on... It's possible that the power/ the with wants Emilia to win the selection. There is a very interesting video about this Theorie. Forgot the title tho.

This episode is heartwarming. It ties into episode 4 so perfectly. Subaru's reaction is beautiful and the tears hit me. It hit me that Subaru has never had a close friend in this world who he didn't have consider a love interest or someone he had to worry about killing him. And what's more is that his relationships with others such as Reinhard, Julius and Willhelm are strong, but more like work colleagues. When Otto told him that they were friends, it must have been the first time he felt safe for the first time in this world since Rem and even before, during his life as a shut-in from home where all his friends abandoned him. He laughs and cries realising that he can rely on someone other than himself when Rem is no longer with him. You can see how Subaru has always acted with money towards Otto throughout the first season, and it makes sense with no expectations since he's a merchant. From the time he pushed Subaru to the white whale to save himself until now, where he puts himself in danger to save Subaru, his development has really shone. The change is comparable to how Rem changed with Subaru's help. Otto is best boy and we all need a friend like him

(ik this is kinda a stretch ok please dont yell at me) There's also a small detail about the title of this episode. The episode is called ユージン, in reference to Subaru misunderstanding Otto when he said 友人 (friend), but this can also have a different meaning. Katakana is used for words that are foreign to the speaker. Since the word 友人 is written in katakana instead, we can then infer that the word 友人 (friend) is foreign to him. Meaning, the concept of friends is foreign to him. That's why he was crying after Otto called him his friend.

Think that’s kind of the point behind considering him selfish; each of the times he’s died so far is because he got restless and needed to do something to feel like he was contributing in some way. Technically speaking, Elsa may or may not have outright informed him (depending on possible translation errors) that it’s _his_ return to the mansion that triggers her attack (he seems to not consider it relates to him this episode, though), which if accurate technically means he, specifically, shouldn’t be in a particular place. Backing off of that, though, it’s _possible_ Emilia would ask him to do it, in the right circumstance. The first time around, iirc, he didn’t suggest himself taking her burden and actually got the idea/support from Garf, while the second time around he almost immediately let them know he’d cleared the first one and suggested going through himself. Had other things been said, who knows what the response would have been? Besides ln readers. Seems that conversation got sped through this time around, but it seemed like he was informing his captors that he’d succeeded for the first time, so it’s likely the same conversation as the first time where he wound up staying for days. Bleh, that was a lot to say he _is_ technically being selfish, but it’s in a particular direction that could afford to be more useful, I think?

84C4 It’s less “everything” and more specifically his need to “be elsewhere.” Like, in episode one or two he was essentially told to take it easy (in regards to using his Gate so it could recover from the workout he put it through), and for the most part he did, but ever since the first time he made it back to the mansion and died, he can’t sit still, rushing back to prevent it and instead triggering it early. Like, I don’t know what’s going to wind up happening, but it _feels_ like he’s spinning his wheels trying to be more useful than his support seemed to be the first time around, and just getting punished for it. Heck, even in this loop while he wasn’t quite _rushing_ to get out, he settled on coordinating the next plot, said the wrong thing to the wrong people, and got put in a hole for it. And now his next course of action seems to be getting out.. and probably heading somewhere he shouldn’t, and getting whacked back again. His next “right thing to do” might, _maybe_ , be to support Emilia and figure out how to manage those opposed to opening up Sanctuary.

Yeah I agree that he isn't selfish. His first life during this chain of events shows how he would have acted naturally and he made the most selfless decisions which resulted in him being trusted by garf but it ended badly anyway. His flaw here isn't that he's being selfish, it's that he isn't being smart enough to navigate everybody's feelings. He basically needs to be very manipulative in this scenario.

I agree with you for the most part but do you believe that Beatrice is a completely "fake" friend? It seemed to me that she said everything she does is in accordance with the gospel but I think she has been deviating from this since Subaru is an enigma in this world and doesnt show up in the gospels. I think beatrice doesnt want to believe that she actually cares for a Human as evidence suggests when she keeps saving him and doesnt know why. (It can be argued that she is just following the book exactly but we dont know what the book actually says or how its worded.

He is most certainly being selfish. He even states it himself. He might be doing it out of kindness but in the long run it is because he is worried about Emilia and of the time it will take her to finish the trials. As he says himself he has no doubts that she would be able to do them..given time..but that is something he doesn't have a lot of. He doesn't want her to suffer but truely at this moment he is like a parent watching their child trying to do something by themself for the first time..but is in a hurry to get out of the house. Rather than give her time to figure it out herself and learn something he wants to do it for her to make her life easier but doing that kind of stuff will in the end just mean that nothing was learned and that she is still far from finishing something that she must do by herself.

God... Subaru's laugh/cry makes my heart ache. Now about Subaru being "selfish", he makes it very clear that all his motives are selfish and that he is greedy. That is what makes the story interesting in my opinion, Subaru is not that character with heroic and incorruptible motives. And people forget that [return by death] is controlled by envy, Subaru is always at the mercy of Envy's incomprehensible wills. At this point it is quite clear that Envy is not a healthy person to relate to, so Subaru's power is both salvation and misery.

3:20 Idk bro I wouldn't go so far as to call him selfish, more like concerned. I think the way he words it matters, if he comes to her correctly, I don't think it'll be so harsh. I personally think it's the reverse. I think it would be a lil selfish and kinda sadistic for emelia to torture herself on a trial when there's 2 more after that just for brownie points of beating it and being the 1 to bring ppl home. People wanna go back home and she's constantly failing and not making any real progress. If anything, her having suburu take it and get the people home is the much cleaner option. But people like Garf don’t want him to. And that would not help Emelia in the long run. If she keeps relying on other people do things for her. Her doing these trials herself will bring her character development. Plus Subaru keeps dying. So not like she is taking forever. I still can’t call him selfish. But more not seeing where Emelia is coming from. Since we know Subaru himself would not want people saving him all the time. As season 1 him would be in the same footsteps as Emelia. If that him took these trials. And him saying they are easy. Is him assuming her past is easy like his. Which he only had to talk to mom and dad. While we know Emelia’s past is dark. And far worse than his. Just have to look at both sides here.

Suburu is trying to take a dub away from Emelia, but at the same time too, Emelia is going to crumble taking the trial over and over again. Not to mention the mansion itself is in danger too. Yeah, they had to cut out some stuff from the source material, in the original, Elsa did not kill subaru in the forbidden library, beatrice simply teleported subaru to the sanctory where he discovered that everyone had vanished without a trace, he then proceed to the tomb looking for an answer, but just as he entered, he got stabbed in the back and was devoured (laterally being eaten) by a THING, the plot then continues with the anime

@@erikho6936 Well, for us web novel readers, it just didn't make much sense that subaru was killed inside the forbidden library since there is no way Beatrice would let her get in. And secondly, the fact that they didn't include the scene which everyone vanished from the sanctuary is a bit of an oof since it does tie into the main plot later on

@@patrickliu2544 Elsa knows the secret to Beatrice's door crossing ability, so her getting into the Library is certainly possible (I don't think this is a spoiler for anime-onlies, because they've just seen it!) As for how Beatrice teleported Subaru all the way to Sanctuary, that's such a major part of the webnovel plot I'm surprised they're able to skip it. I guess we'll find out though!

I just realized watching these videos are pretty useful to catch on to details with the episodes. With a first watch, I didn’t catch certain stuff like dang..I didn’t know Ryuzu’s last name changed this episode. Btw, last part of the episode is the best part with best girl Ram and best boi Otto. Subaru’s laughing reminds me of the time he saw Otto before in the village; and the shocked look was probably his trust issues from the time Otto basically killed him.

The title of the episode is: "The Maiden's Gospel." Upon seeing that, I immediately remembered the first time Subaru and Echidna met. During their conversation, echidna mentions that , as a maiden, she looks lively for her age. Now, what does this mean you may ask? The gospel that Beatrice was holding so tightly and passionately on might be written and given to Beatrice by the only maiden we know of, Echidna. If the author happens to be Echidna, then it's safe to presume that echidna is also the mother that Beatrice calls to at the beginning of the episode. If that was the case, they can't be biologically related since Echidna is an elf, I think, and Beatrice is a spirit. So, a creator-creation relationship is more plausible like you mentioned in your video. And to that, I agree. The relationship between Subaru and his mother is much different than that of Echidna and Beatrice. One is all about true love while the other is driven by fear and immense pain judging by Beatrice's tone and the way she was animated. I won't be surprised if Roswaal follows the same book because before Subaru's first departure, Roswaal told Ram to tell Subaru to ask Beatrice the question, and I'm pretty sure Roswaal is referring to the gospel since it appears to answer questions about what Beatrice should do or how to act. Yea also, The effort you put in your videos is nothing but commendable. I enjoyed this one thoroughly. After reading this again, I found it quite stupid lol.

Grand Theft Otto proving once again why he is the definitive Best Boy. You could almost feel sorry for Subaru reactions, since having a genuine friend is such a foreign concept to him. Only thing they didn't answer is how did he find Subaru? I assume it had to do with Otto's divine gift of talking to animals or something? Seems odd that Gar didn't turn on Subaru sooner, though I guess his scent wasn't as noticeable? As for Beatrice, seems pretty clear Echidna is her mother. The Butterfly eyes, Roswall also having a connection to her, and the whole sanctuary arc being about mixed-bloods. I do think she is struggling between what she wants to do, and what the Gospel is telling her. It's clear that she actually does care about Subaru, but she's just denying her own feelings to make it easier to follow what the book says. It's also interesting how Otto pointed how how Subaru was basically becoming desensitized to everything after the trial.
