Loved the song from the first time I heard it back in'78 .

This has become one of my Elton favorites, even though it kinda reminds me of something Billy Joel would make in the late '70s

I was there at the concert. Hard to believe. Long time. The opening was so great. Hundreds of balloons were released into the sky. It was powerful.

Such an amazing song. I wish it was a hit like his other classics. It certainly deserves it.

Bought the vinyl single way back in 1978. Always thought it was one of his best songs. Great!

I had the promo single for this and wondered why it wasn't on an album (since included on A Single Man). I love this song and wondered why it wasn't a hit.

it's a great song, but this video alone, it's the way he had the white steinway set up to make it sound that good, where as if it was his black steinway, it would've had the normal piano sound. This is what the white steinway sounded like before he enhanced it with midi around 1984 or 1985.

This song is so much better without the silly video. When he sings it in the video, it’s kinda funny - listening on its own, you realize how powerful and brilliant it is.

Just my opinion. This might be his "Heroes and Villain's ".An incredibly progressive song released at a time when he had been so successful for so long,it was about time he started to ebb in popularity. That being said, this is a record that should have been a pinnacle in his recording career. It sounds to me to be autobiographical.Would have been right at home on the Captain Fantastic album.

I can't say for sure, but honestly I think it might've been written during the Captain Fantastic sessions but scrapped from the album. I remember Chameleon was written and had a demo tape made during the Caribou sessions, so it wouldn't be entirely impossible for this to be the case with Ego.

It also reminds me of Queen's "Bicycle Race", which came out the same year as "Ego". Both great songs.

wasn't this about Bowie, Macca etc? I don't think Bernie would ever write something like this about Elton, even if he got -ehm- carried away in that period

@@deadfafi its about anyone who is idolized by millions. i think iniitally the inspiration might have been elvis but lets face it, elton fell prey to this inevitable pitfall of being famous. right down to tennis shoes.....
