Elton and the band (Nigel, Dee, Davey, and Ray) were sooo tight at this point. "Love Lies Bleeding" immediately became my favourite track from HERE AND THERE when I bought it in the spring of 1976. "Take me To The Pilot" was a close second from that NY side. I found that I was playing the HERE AND THERE version of "Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" much more than the original studio version from GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. The live version rocks! Love the photos and footage. Hard to think that this band would have less than one month of concerts remaining as a unit...

As a teenager, I saw Elton and the band twice in 1974. I remember clearly how both shows started with F.FF. The house lights went completely dark. We all went crazy trying to get a glimpse of Elton and what he was wearing. As FFF continued through the pre-recorded intro, the stage remained totally dark. The moment Elton hit those first two notes, the spotlight went directly on him. Elton swayed from side to side as he played during the beginning, never looking at the audience. It wasn't until the beginning of LLB when he yelled, "Oh"! Did he first look at the crowd. It was timed perfectly, and we all went nuts. I remember this very well, no BS. Of course i dont remember what I had for dinner last night! Thanks for posting. Love your channel.

Dear Mr Blackstone, I really agree with your comments. I'm from Barcelona, in Catalonia, and I will never forget the first time I heard 'Funeral for a friend' from 'Here and there'. I was 16 or so, and I feel absolutely impressed and excited about the song, the lyrics of it I do not understand a single word then (now I can understand English but not at 16 since in the school I've learned french as the foreign language). My feeling was as if I had ever listened this song. It's hard to explain, hope doesn't sound too weird. What I can say is that this version of 'Funeral' still excites me, make me happy. So thanks 4 your comments, I really enjoy listening to your thougts :)

Me too! They were absolutely on fire that evening. I’ve heard lots of recordings from that tour and something really special was happening that night. That’s why I’ve never been able to understand why the “here and there“ album is so underappreciated. The album features definitive live versions of several Elton songs. I was 10 years old in 1973 when the Goodbye Yellow Brick road was released. I was a young piano player and the GYBR album was a turning point for me. I wore out 2 copies of the album and studied every song on the album. I am 60 years old and still actively playing local clubs in a band and I owe it all to Elton and this album. My singing style and piano p[laying heavily influenced by Elton from that moment on. It's still my number 1 pick even now. I owe my entire musical career to Elton. The sonic quality of the album was so good compared to many other albums in the day. It was as close to CD quality years before CD's and digital were ever implemented. Thanks Jon for this video and I hope you do more recordings from Elton to introduce him to a younger audience who might not otherwise get to experience his music.

Just found your channel and I can't begin to say how truly wonderful this is. 1973 I was 10 soon to be 11 in September. This was my very first album I ever had. Back then radio was definitely all we listened to every day. I would play this album over and over. I had memorized every lyric to every song on this album. Funeral for a friend had to be my favorite. My mom died that year and all this music had very special meaning for me. I had a sister who was 7 years older than myself and in high school and music of those days was just so magical. Thank you for reminding me of music's glorious times.

The most sorely unknown and underrated live album EVER. Especially on this track the entire band is ON FIRE! London was a brilliant plan of "presenting the history of Elton John," the members joinng onstage in the order they had been added to the band as everybody got to highlight their contributions (don'tcha just love Ray's duck call solo?). For New York it's the standard set played on a US-only holiday with enough energy, emotion and pure fire to practically blow the roof off MSG - I can hear and feel it everytime I listen. The entire record has a vibe that is rarely found. Both of the recordings are absolutely superb sonically - kudos to Gus Dudgeon and crew. The expanded version released years later included a few extra tracks but they were nothing special in any way. Plus, something happened to the overall sound. Maybe they didn't mix it using... "dubblee."

Great video Jon. Have you ever seen Elton's jersey at the top of the Garden for his record number of performances? He was the only non sports person to have a jersey up there. Billy Joel has one now too but I think that's bogus as Elton's is legit from touring through the years and doing it first. Billy got his because he was the house band for so long. Nothing against Billy but to me Elton's has more meaning.

The first time i heard the Gus Dudgeon remaster I was angry the girl yelling out Elton was gone!

Oh my gosh I can’t believe that! I’ve never met anyone else who noticed the differences in those 1990s mixes. I loved that album so much; and I knew every tiny detail of it. When they released the album in the 90s, it was remixed and they had removed a lot of the coolest sonic elements of the recording. I was really happy to have the expanded version; especially the entirety of the Madison Square Garden show. But the 70s mix is far superior. In fact, you can buy it on eBay for next to nothing. The best CD version of that original album is released by Polydor. It sounds absolutely fantastic! You made my day! I love when fans care about these things! The mix I used for my video (and my longer video) were taken from the original 1976 Here and There album. Those mixes are far superior to the ‘90s remix (as you noted). I have the original album on CD; which you can find used for next to nothing on ebay. The first CD was released by MCA in the 80s. But the best version is the Polydor CD released in the early’90s before the remix was released. When your shopping on ebay just make sure you’re buying the nine song version. Having said all that, I am so thankful they released the expanded version. That entire show was on fire! Thanks for watching!

Yes he edited out the 'Elton!', but I also noticed that the re-releases of 11-17-70 have a fun interaction between Elton and some woman in the audience (as 'Honkey Tonk Woman' is beginning) edited out. Why edit out the fun little moments that the fans (like me) adore? Other edits on that album also infuriate me because they are so unnecessary...like reusing moments of applause to extend the time in between songs. Why? It seems unnecessary, and is poorly done to boot (the spots where she spoke is now just dead silence, with the audience laughing at nothing).

I totally agree! I appreciate that they re-released the live albums in expanded versions; but I don’t like the mixes or the approach as much as I like the original 1970s version. So the solution is to buy both! It’s the best of both worlds. Thanks for your great comments and for watching!
