I think his biggest problem in the situation back then was a combination of his super shyness, possibly budding sexual feelings that didn't match this relationship and his being very young. His father didn't really set a great example for him in relationships and he was most likely a bit scared, out of his element and just beginning to show his tendency to over-react in stressful situations. I mean, remember back when YOU were in your early 20's.... how 'together' were you? Elton is only human.

Oh gosh how I totally agree with you and this comment. That's exactly what I was thinking. I mean, Elton didn't even lose his virginity until he was 23, and I think that was after his relationship with LInda. He was very shy and still trying to understand his sexuality and feelings it was a very confusing time period for him, that only made him eve n more confused after time. I often wonder what his relationship with Linda, Renate, and all these other girls would've turn out if he met them much later in his life, like in the 90s when he became sober and clean.

I have always felt sorry for this woman, because he just shreds her in this song, and some say in a few other songs, and she has never really had a chance to defend herself. Being a gay man myself, I have often wondered if the true reason he was afraid of marrying her was his true sexuality, and maybe his need to justify the break-up without admitting the truth created this misdirected rage that he used to explain his actions. I mean, c'mon. Suicide because your GF is dominating? I doubt it.

She seems like a lovely person. I believe it was very traumatic for EJ to confront his sexuality in those times, and maybe that's why he was suddenly so repulsed by his near-marriage to her, but it would be nice if he'd publicly show some kindness and make amends. It's not as if she ruined his life; he's the one who was being dishonest about his sexual tastes.

Problem is everyone thinks marriage and romance are so great. All that does is stifle a person. If he married her, he would be trapped. He sure as hell wouldn't have the career he has now. Besides he was young and naive. Is there some law saying you have to marry young. I feel a little sorry for her but I have a feeling if they married both lives would be ruined.

That is pretty harsh. Everybody is somebody. Famous people are not above others. This woman is entitled to her memories and emotions regarding them. I also doubt she sought publicity - the network probably found HER. She sounds pretty sympathetic and I can imagine her being hurt by a well-known song being about her and depicting her as basically a bad person. Keep in mind it is now 44 years later and still people will hear only HIS side of the story each time they play that song. I love the song, but I think it would be a nice gesture if Elton would publically say he no longer holds the resentment that is in the lyrics and he just sings it because it is a part of his past.

Just because Elton John is world famous and now *"Sir"* Elton John, that doesn't make Linda (Woodrow) Hannon a nobody, or anyone less important.
