He sure knows how to suck up and look good in public, he starts off telling Elton how good the Madonna concert was, Elton fires back it was so so, Mick back peddles and agrees with Elton saying how it could have been so much better. So he's basically just trying to please everyone including the guests and the viewers, different story without the cameras

His ability to socialize was certainly a big help at this occasion, where most people he met were kinda drunk and / or superficial. Talking with Elton John, about what he's passionate about, was clearly the most rewarding thing. Luckily you can have conversations like that everywhere.

Mick is a real pro. He's done this for a long time. He is all smiles, jokes, pats on the back, nods, winks, good nature...without giving anything away at all. He's like that with nearly all interviews as well...you can't get beneath that seemingly good-natured co-operative exterior. It's all bland, non-committal answers. Whereas Keef is much more heart on the sleeve.

But was it what he really thought, or was he just being bitchy? He even used it to infer that Mick would suffer the same fate. In my experience that kind of needless needling is best ignored, or handled diplomatically, as Mick did.

Even the press! That lady asking about his suit was really just her trying to get a photo op, probably for an article. Or maybe just for her personal benefit. But regardless, instead of being tacky or abrasive like most press asking for a pic, she walks up and asks him a specific question while complimenting his suit. Now she has an awesome pic of her chatting with Mick, some insight on what he was wearing, and more than enough for an article about the experience. Or just a simple memory. Either way, it was done with class. As only a member of British high society would.

@Boo The ideas and the material for the autobiography come from Keith though and he can hold a conversation. He speaks intelligently though he speaks slowly and not fluidly these days. Mick may be very nicely mannered and more articulate in person but he has quite a history of betraying wives and the band. Keith is more loyal and he's fairly honest about his own shortcomings in the book.

You'll notice that as they entered the party the string quartet was playing the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony," which is actually based on a sample taken from an album by The Stones' former manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham. He produced a string arrangement of "The Last Time" for his Oldham Orchestra record. Mick is heard saying: "Yea, I like that one," as he enters the back garden.
