Same with me, as a 64-year-old lifelong musician. What also gave me hope was that so many other people of all ages and backgrounds latched on to his music, all saying the same thing, that they were feeling jaded by the current music scene and were looking for something authentic. (Lol, I could have used a better phrase than "latched on;" we're not leeches, but we are "thirsty" for real music!)

In an interview he said that's because it was done in 2 or 3 takes, because the landlord didn't want him filming in the basement, so they did it anyway and got it done quick. It might have been a different video if they had a longer time to film, but the simplicity works in it's favour.

Hi Ren is not a one-take in the true sense of the term. Apart from having cuts, towards the end they switch to a handheld camera so those shots are from a separate take. Samuel Perry-Falvey has clarified that in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's reaction to the song.

The fascinating thing about watching reactions to this song is that it generally seems to resonate deeply with people so that instead of talking about the song, reactors talk about themselves. I suspect many of those watching your reaction are not looking for analysis, but are seeking echoes of the way this song impacted them the first time they watched it. Like many, you appeared to start off in professional mode, but then ended up revealing yourself as a human being. Thank you for your frankness.

😭 Thanks so much. The whole irony of all this is, I almost cut off the whole part I was talking about my own experience, because I hesitated about its relevancy. In fact, I almost didn't post this video because I thought maybe it wouldn't have value for anyone. What a wake up call I'm getting from this, really.

Ya I have noticed that the usual reactor personas end up fading off into a trance as they try to comprehend what they are watching... Most composure around analyzing this falls apart as well as this hits many people so differently, but yet seems to have something in common also. Last but not least many people end up showing their "ticks" or poker "tells" while they watch this...

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

If you find it hard to talk after your first Hi Ren, it means you understood it. As many others said, The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) is another must-see. If you want something more light/fun after that, go for either 'Losing It', 'What You Want' or 'I Shot The Sherriff/Toad To Zion/Hip-Hop' by the Big Push (his former band).

Hello! Thank you for this Ren reaction. He has blown up since this song dropped at the end of 2022, and I'm sure you can see why. Every song he does is something different, some "bardcore", some rock, some hip-hop. He has so many influences, went to school for music in Bath, England. Taught himself guitar by watching videos of greats like Jimi Hendrix and slowing them down. He's brilliant with the guitar, and the piano. Also produces his own tracks, and beats.

As a retired actor, I appreciated your reaction immensely and look forward to you diving into Ren's catalog of music. Ren is truly a genre bender who fuses and blends genre's in the most beautiful & satisfying way. Ren is a Singer/Songwriter/Rapper, Poet, Storyteller, multi-instrumentalist Guitar(electric,acoustic)/Bass/Piano/Drums & he also Beatboxs, Producer/Director/Actor. Now you may think, "Jack of all trades and master of none", but you'd be dead wrong and I'll also add this brilliant artist is self taught in all these area's. If you'd like to react to a breath taking song of his not often reacted to on YT, I'd recommend a gorgeous piano ballad by Ren - "Penitence" Ft. Molly McKinna blending Spoken Word & Rap some haunting vocals by his friend Molly. Another favorite of mine is Ren - "Ready for You", where Ren blends elements of Jazz and Rap and as an actor myself I very appreciate his trilogy "The Tale of Jenny & Screech" (full version). Now that one should be watched all in one sitting or you might miss the impact of the ending of Violets Tale which is VERY powerful. The trilogy runs a little over 13min but that just fly's by and by the end you'll realize the brilliance of this Bardcore genre and Ren's storytelling ability. Cheers Elvann, and I'm looking forward to more of you Ren reactions.

Love hearing your thoughts from a musician's perspective, Elvann. Ren spent a lot of his career busking, where he learned how to capture the attention of strangers who are distracted by their daily routine. He connected with people on a human level. This is different from making music to please the radio industry which serves the advertising industry. Yes, it brings financial benefits, which helps pay the bills, but it also takes the humanity out of art. A very difficult balancing act. Keep on creating. Best wishes.

I don't think the guitar was out of tune in the beginning. To me, this piece is all about contrast. The hard pluck and bends would be the contrast of an almost classical, at least in style, melody. The same way that the lights in the background flicker when is the shadow self talking, and not with ren. The guitar playing of the shadow uses the complete chords with open strings, while Ren uses only specific notes and no open strings (could be translated as a sign of vulnerability, like talking in low voice so no one would hear). The shadow's voice resonates in a different frequency, I always relate to chaotic evil, like a joker. While most of the song, Ren's voice has more signs of fragility and almost innocence. It's interesting in a movement of acceptance, the part after the shadows description, Ren evolves sentence by sentence to using the full chords, from the root, then adding the third, then the fifth, then firm vocals, while the lights flicker. That points to the spoken verse after, of not being two beings, but one. I'd describe it as a presentation of both faces until it builds up to show that those are parts of the same individual. And as a side note, it clearly shows that no one can hit you harder then yourself. No one knows more your soft spots then yourself. The shadow knows exactly what to say to keep evolving until Ren is fully in the argument or fight enough to annihilate him in the shadow description part. By the way, shadow because Jung.

Ren's message is all about positivity and being the best you. This is the song that really put him on the map and it surprised him as it's more of a personal piece. He was in the middle of writing and recording a rap album when he released this and he didn't think it would do much but it has become his most watched release. All of the rest of his music going back over a decade has now started to get noticed so just keep on creating the art you want to create and as he said allow the HOPE to drown out the negativity and self doubt. Be true to yourself, create what you want to create and connect with those who respect your work.

When creating any kind of art, music, etc, in fact ANYTHING that you create, there will always be people that don't like it, and others that do. If you're completely honest with yourself if you like or not, and the answer is yes, then why care if anyone doesn't like it? Remember, if you like it yourself, then by the law of averages, others will too. If you truly believe something is good, that should be enough for anyone.

I was so happy, when you mentioned the Russian legend Vysotski. I'm from Eastern Europe and here we call what he did with his music a singing poetry. His art was raw, heartbreaking and choking, because he was truly a tortured soul. In singing poetry in general you have everything that life itself has - suffering, humour, irony, love, beauty, everything. And there is no holding back. And I agree that Ren belongs to this amazing group of people, because his songs have this enormous impact you can't deny the same way Vysotski influenced the Eastern Bloc. People loved his music and you can only imagine how hard it was to love anything coming from Russia, but he did it, he was that amazing as an artist. Reacting to Vysotski can be hard without translation, but Diana Ankudinova sings the cover of his song you can find on YT and someone translated the lyrics, so anyone interested can go and check it out.

Do we have any Ren songs we'd like you to react to? What a question for Renegades! We have long lists, here's mine: 1. Tale of Jenny, Screech, and Violet. It's a trilogy, important you listen to these in order. Ren has put them together in order in one 13-minute video (full.) 2. After "Hi Ren," and Tales, something fun is called for: "90's" "Losing It," or "Love Music" and "Love Music 2". 3. At this point you'll have had a taste of Ren's range, and "Money Game 1" and "Money Game 2" would be appropriate. Be sure you watch the Lyric video for MG2 -- it's longer, not the same lyrics as the live version. Loved your heartfelt & articulate reaction to "Hi Ren." I'll keep an eye out for your next Ren!

This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song. Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome. There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me… just as this song also resonates. As a person who’s never been able to escape imposter syndrome and negative self-talk, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that I *know* I have-was sooo important. It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it. *Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison. You are *stronger* than that voice. You are stronger than you can *possibly* know… until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Ren was not trained on guitar he was/is self taught and learned from youtube videos. 3. So the song is about illness and mental health ren was misdiagnosed as a kid for years with depression, bipolar and other illnesses so was fed wrong medications untill finally he got a proper diagnosed with lyme disease and is now still going through treatment. Finally while he was misdiagnosed he actually signed with sony studios but due to his illness and not being able to keep his comitments with sony they dropped him and is a independent artist

I think you noticed and commented on something most do not (on their first listen). The guitar work is definitely chaotic. Sometimes very nice and melodic... while other times a bit de-tuned and frantic. The intro (to me, anyway) is definitely indicative of two very different mindsets. I think of it as "in tune" and "out of tune." I have an advantage of having heard this easily 100 times. You picked up on it right away. I noticed the de-tuning right away, but it took a number of hearings for me to 'connect the dots.' In my opinion, you will have to re-experience this at least 10 times to be confident you have picked up on all the wonderfully woven messages and hints. After about 8 times I connected what I THINK is an illustration of how the issues really never 'end.' It's how he finishes the musical chords without fully resolving them. He leaves you hanging... waiting for the "end." There IS no end. If I'm right, that is a VERY deep and profound message. Anyway, you seem like you are VERY empathetic and wise. You will enjoy digging deeper into this song, and everything else he does! Great reaction! Liked and subscribed!

In an interview Ren said that Hi Ren was a one take, the third take they did. They didn't have permission to be in the basement they were in, and they had 4 cameras and two mics. As they were finishing the second take, the building manager walked in and asked them to leave. They begged for another 30 minutes and that was the take they used. However, the very end part when he turns from putting down the guitar and starts talking is a separate take. They were allowed to go back when the building manager helped them submit the correct paperwork. Post production was them just taking footage from the various cameras they had set up to auto record.

my connection to this song is only the similarity of struggle,, i'm undiagnosed autistic and have struggled with being a bit weird my whole life i had to start my own business because i had problems holding a job with sleep disorders and high ethics.. but managed to stay in business the last 40 years without needing to advertise or even carry a card, i run a lawn and tree service and do all phases of construction and kind of an inventor on the side after six years of development i figured out a disaster response product that could help millions worldwide .. then my insurance agent forgot to post a payment back in 2020 and the state took everything i worked the last 40 years for away .. stuck at home like a prisoner i came online and saw people helping others so i started making videos explaining hat i was. trying to do to get help and found out if the platform your uploading to doesn't promote you your just talking to your phone, and then i see stuff like this and get jealous because i will never write a song that gets peoples attn like this. so my chances are fading. and it's scary as hell to think of all that could be, but it may all be lost because one person forgot to hit enter on there keyboard..

Yes, like Russian or possibly Eastern European folk music, that was my thought too when I first heard that part. I’ve watched something like 40 reaction videos to this song, and you are the only person that mentioned that, nice catch! An awesome and genuine reaction as well, thank you! I hope you do more Ren videos, he’s so musically diverse. I’m sure you’ll see recommendations for his most popular songs, but I suggest you also listen to his older songs as well even if you don’t make videos about them. Cheers!

And the raw realism is true authenticity (a word I hate but Ren is helping me reclaim it) This is pure creativity and every emotion you could imagine. Once you know, you know, and I can tell you know. Thanks for this reaction, and your thoughts. Much appreciated. And Ren has directly thanked reactors like you for his success. Happy to have you in the Reniverse

Thank you for your reaction and your comments. I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn't a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every "Hi Ren" reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker/producer from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, melodica, drums), has impressive vocals, produces all his own beats, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music "bardcore." Ren's music videos are frequently recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. In the case of "Hi Ren," it took four takes, all live in the room, to get the footage he wanted. Someone commented that Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed "Hi Ren," talks about the production of the video in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's (Filmmaker Reacts) reaction to the song. According to him, this video footage is not a one-take per se, but the audio was recorded live in a single take. Ren's release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren" and appears to have been filmed in the same room. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 17 million views since its debut. Ren recently released a video of an older live stage performance of “Hi Ren;” it is worth checking out. However, Ren has been creating great music for more than ten years. Many of Ren's songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren's earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called "Trick The Fox," consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren's onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is "The Mash Up." Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJDcc4OheL5phc0 Ren's trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master's class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren's Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out "The Hunger," "Genesis," "What You Want," "Losing It (FISHER rap retake)," "Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake)," "Life is Funny," "Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3)," "Crucify Your Culture," "Power," "Hold On," just to name a few. Ren's collaborations with Chinchilla ("Chalk Outlines," "How to Be Me," "Sexual Healing," "One Dance/Drunk in Love") are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," "Diazepam," "Penitence," "Dear God," "Heretic," "Dominos," his "Freckled Angels" album, in particular his song "Fire," just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren is about to shoot "Money Game Part III." Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins ("Blind Eyed," "Earned It /Mans World / Falling," "Walking on the Moon/No Diggity," "Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin')," "Latch," "Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session)," "Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren)," "Improvising Around Stevie Wonder," "Live in the Streets of Brighton, UK," "What Went Wrong" Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash ("Humble," "Ocean"), Bibi ("Crutch," "Ahiahiaoha"), Molly McKinna ("Penitence"), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa ("French Song"), are all great. Last but not least, Ren's busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover)," which is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble So Hard," "War Pigs," "Roadhouse Blues," "My Generation," "Paint It Black," "An Englishman in New York," "Bongo Bong" are excellent. On "These Boots Are Made For Walking'/Satisfaction/Everybody," "Praise You" (Fatboy Slim Cover), and "What Kind Of Woman Is This," all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," "Swan Song," "Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Dignity," "Watch Out," and so many others are equally impressive. The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released during the time he expects to be gone. He released "Sick Boi," "Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake)," which is another masterful work, "Illest Of Our Time," and "Animal Flow," which is out now in two versions, a full-production music video, and a live, one-take acoustic version. Ren also premiered the official music video of his song “Murderer,” and followed it up with a newly recorded acoustic live version that is phenomenal and my favorite of the two versions. Ren's release, "Su!cIde," recently premiered, and it was hard to watch to the point that I was not able to watch or listen to it again. I was not even able to watch a single reaction to it. It is a sad, haunting, gut-wrenching tribute to Ren's friend Joe who took his own life. Ren’s follow-up to “Su!cIde,” "For Joe," is also sad and emotional, but strangely enough, it has had a healing effect on me and has given me a sense of closure. Even the lyrics that "gutted" me in "Su!cIde" impacted me differently this time around.

Thank you for sharing your reaction. I would like to say that there is a difference between being speechless or inarticulate because of some deficit in ability, versus being overcome with genuine emotion. I don't think anyone watching your video could possibly believe that you were acting or pretending to be overcome; so when you question whether you're making sense, or conveying your point, part of what you're so beautifully sharing with us is that the art was powerful enough to make you lose your bearings for a bit. And you were quite articulate for almost the entire video; the parts where you clearly couldn't find the words just made what you shared with us more powerful and authentic. Great job!

While Hi Ren is what brought Ren to a lot of people's attention, it's not his starting point. He has a massive back catalogue of music that goes back years, all of which is worth a listen. If making music is what you love, keep making it. Nobody knows what the future may bring. A good example to this is the video he uploaded before Hi Ren released, it's not a music video though but is worth watching
