I lived the Elvis years and it tells the truth. It actually was that frantic, once a group of girls literally snatch his clothes off, and his response was ,well they paid for them". I was 11 when he appeared on Sullivan and my dad would not let me watch him. He took a lot of abuse. White radio stations would not play black music till he changed that. Some stations would break his records on the air. They said it was devil music. Men would ask him for an autograph then punch him in the face. He helped James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Little Richard get into the business. All black performers. Many like Jackie Elvis paid their medical bills. You should watch "Elvis and the Black Community". I hope that this movie will show the kind and generous humanitarian he was. I am 78 now and will never stop listening to the greatest entertainer of all time. thanks.

You are spot on. I was raised on Elvis’s music and went to Graceland in the spring of 1977 passing through Memphis on the way to New Orleans. My mom, brother and I were on Spring Break. We pulled up to the gates of Graceland and Elvis’s uncle, Vester Presley was manning the gate and said he was away on tour. I stood and looked at the rock wall with all of the signatures of fans who had stopped by over the years. I was 11 years old at the time and was in awe. 5 months later he was dead. I’ll never forget it, my Mom’s generation was devastated. She was a teen when Elvis first came on the scene. Everywhere we went that day people were crying. The grocery store, gas station, dr’s office…. according to my mom it hit people as hard as the day JFK was shot. Years later by chance I moved to a suburb outside of Memphis with my husband and kids. I was at a parent/student lunch with my son and struck up a conversation with a grandfather at the table. I was new to the area and found out he was a former Memphis PD detective and was at Graceland the day of Elvis’s funeral. He helped carry the casket out of the front of Graceland to take it to the cemetery. He said when they brought the casket out of the front of the house, they heard a loud cracking noise and one of the large branches on one of the large trees on the front lawn snapped and fell to the ground with a loud thump. He said it was the most ominous thing he had ever felt……even Graceland itself was mourning the loss. Such an amazing man Elvis was, I just wish he could have really known how much he meant to so many people. One of a kind 🙏

I was born in 1965 and, although I’ve been offended my many things, I have never found Elvis’s movements sexual or vulgar. The Milton Berle version of Hound Dog with the bump and grind is my favourite and the way he should have always performed it, in my opinion. I’ve enjoyed reading your comment….thank you! And yes, Elvis In The Black Community in great. Sammy Davis Jnr comments that Elvis was his friend, if I’m not mistaken.

Huge Elvis fan. Saw the movie last night...fantastic. I too felt a bit dizzy trying to take in the first few scenes. Austin Butler was incredible, he captured Elvis in a way that gave me a sense of his heart. I was blessed to see Elvis in person in 1975, something I will never forget. This movie and the actors are seriously Oscar worthy. Fully knowing how the story would end, I still cried as it tugged so deeply at my heart...that is great direction and great acting. I hope a new generation learns to appreciate how much he shaped music. Wonder if Elvis knew his impact. What saddens me is the realization we haven't come very far from a racial and bigotry perspective. This was a powerful story, not only of a man's life but of humanity. When will we learn.

I just came back from watching it and being someone who was exposed to a lot of his music through several family members and parents who are fans, I really enjoyed it and even stayed through the end credits/songs. I loved how it switched to real footage of him at the end and it was really moving, making that "last stage performance" even more tragic. I think both of them deserve Oscar nods and dare I say Austin should be a frontrunner for best actor. One of my favorite Elvis songs is "Memories" because of how sentimental it is.

Elvis gave an astronomical 1,684 Concerts and over 6,000 Live Performances during his 24 year career, an astonishing and amazing achievement not surpassed by anyone else in the music business! And over 1 Billion Records sold Worldwide (international sales went largely unreported so no one truly knows how many more records he actually sold around the world - probably 3x that amount reported). The Highest Selling Single Artist in the History of Recorded Music. AND the Only Entertainer in the World that is a member of these 4 major Music Halls of Fame - Rock 'n Roll HOF, R&B HOF, Country HOF and Gospel HOF! His contributions to the blues and gospel and rockabilly often is misunderstood or undervalued. The most amazing stat to me that Elvis absolutely crushes is 114 Top 40 Hits on the Billboard charts. Noone comes ANYWHERE CLOSE. 114 were in the Top 40, 40 were in the top 10, and 18 went to number one BEFORE HE DIED. Today he's up to 34 Number 1 Hits. "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" debuted in 2003. Its most recent certification, a 6× Platinum award, for US sales in excess of six million copies, was announced by the RIAA on March 8, 2018. England accounted for over 3 Million. The album helped Elvis to have the longest span of number one albums on the Billboard 200. The album remained on the chart for one hundred and twelve weeks.

Being one of those music listeners who don't 'idolize' any particular singer, it's tough appreciating a bio-pic! So, Elvis, "I know him!" - and may be 3 classic hits! Though no favorites, it could be "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" - just the sincerity in his voice, is worth it. Anyway, your comments on the Directing style is note-worthy. Hope 'non-Elvis fans' will learn the essence of his talent, and not just his wardrobe flash, persona on stage presence! :)

King were actually friends. They became friends before Elvis even became famous and remained friends for 20+ years. Googling "Elvis and B.B. King" will bring up one of the interviews where B.B. King talks in length about Elvis ("Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism. With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. RIP to Reverend H.W. Brewster (the black pastor that told Elvis “when things are too dangerous to say, sing” when he was in high school) as well. Don’t know if he will really show up in the movie, but I love how that particular quote from Brewster made it into both the movie and the trailers. We may not have songs like “If I can Dream” or especially “In the ghetto” sung by Elvis otherwise.

He didn't sing every song though. But the ones he did sing he did really well. From my understanding he did all the 50's stuff because the recordings of the originals weren't high enough quality for a theater. He then was mixed in with Elvis' own voice and it's eventually all Elvis. That 68 comeback bit that I have heard is definitely all Elvis.

My late father and my aunt saw Elvis in 1957 in Spokane, WA. He was 12; she was 17. Their pastor-father drove them all the way from the interior of BC to see him. There is a photo from the newspaper of hundreds of girls, with my aunt in the front, all screaming and crying and grabbing the DIRT off the ground where Elvis had walked onto the stage area of the fairgrounds. She still has the DIRT! It WAS that crazy. And we had an awful riot in Vancouver when he came here and he said he’d never come back, which was horrible, but he did make the fans THAT crazy. I’d have been a little out of sorts too, if I’d had the chance to see him. There was nothing fake about the crazy crowds in the movie. In fact, it may have even been downplayed a bit.

Fantastic review. Presley had intimate conversations with at least a dozen African American megastars. From Ali to Jim Brown, Sammy Davis, Jackie Wilson or James Brown, so God only knows what they conversed, but the interaction with BB KIng, as shown in the movie, was as you said, quite credible. Now, there is something I woukd like to share with you about...well, I will let him speak but since you saw the movie, at least the venues will be familiar. What is incredible is that Luhrmann missed it. You be the judge. And I quote "Well, this was during the time that Elvis Presley was driving a gravel truck and we were playing on 11th Street and they didn't allow whites there. It was a whole black street. And at that time I didn't know who Elvis was, whether he was a musician, he was just a guy that I liked. He liked music, so I liked him because he liked music. I'm assuming that was it and we had some form of rapport together. So I would slip him into the back of the club, the piano sitting like this and the back door was sitting there and I would sit him and have him behind the piano, because in those days I would stand up to play the piano, and I'd play the piano backwards and just clowning with the piano. But I never knew that this guy was even an entertainer. But meantime, I'm just assuming a couple of years later or so, I hear this "Blue Suede Shoes" but I never put this with this guy at all. I don't even connect the two. And many years later, in Las Vegas, I was playing the lounge room at the International Hotel, and Elvis was in the main room, but you know I never was interested in other acts, you know, I always was interested, like if I get to know you, OK, but for me to go over there, no way And one night, I won some three thousand dollars, and I was coming down through the back, had all this big old rack of chips and stuff and this white guy says, "Hey you don't remember me?" And I said no. So that's when he [Elvis] told me that he was the one that used to come to West Memphis and hide behind the piano, in this black club. You know, it was amazing, you know? Unquote *** Ike Turner, in an interview with Open vault, from WGBH, trying to say that as far as the Las Vegas encounter is concerned, that this was the ice-breaker for him to become reacquainted as a friend with Elvis, after all those years.

The Black influences, if anything, were exaggerated (complete with hip hop versions of EP songs in the soundtrack) for woke street cred. His obsession with and love for white southern Gospel quartets was ignored. He often stayed up all night singing southern gospel around the piano in his hotel suite, he idolized the Blackwood Brothers and others as a young man, his only Grammy Awards were for his Gospel albums, and it was southern gospel quartets that were invited to sing at his private funeral service inside Graceland. He was big friends with J.D. Sumner and the spiritual tug of war inside of him between the sacred and the secular helped define him for those who really knew him.

I think the film made a dreadful mistake in allowing Priscilla Presley to edit it for "veracity." In allowing her to do so, she has shifted the focus squarely onto HERSELF as Elvis' love interest, giving the false impression that after she left him, Elvis never again had the love of a woman in his life. No mention was made of the other women who were an important part of Elvis' life. I also don't believe for one minute that Priscilla left Elvis on the floor in a pool of tears, begging her not to leave him. Another major gaff the film made was how it failed to present the fun-loving quality of Elvis' personality. Elvis had a great sense of humor, but one would never know it by watching this film. It also skipped over the quirky, charming pleasures that Elvis indulged in, such as his love of fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches and his selecting total strangers to bestow lavish gifts upon. It missed the SUBTLE charms that made Elvis the unique and wonderful man he was, and focused too much on him being a kind of victim; especially toward the end of his life. Lastly, the film ignores what REALLY made Elvis' music so original and ground-breaking: his deft blend of a VARIETY of musical genres and styles that no artist up to then had even thought about drawing from for their musical inspiration. Yes, Elvis was inspired by Gospel and Blues, BUT he was equally inspired by bluegrass, country, the Folk music of the Appalachian Mountains and even OPERA music. Elvis blended ALL these together, creating a sound that was unique, fresh and exciting. That the film chose to focus solely upon Gospel and Blues as Elvis' SOLE musical influences is an INSULT to Elvis as an artist!

When I saw his last concert footage 1977, I got freak out how fragile he looked from georgous 1973 Aloha concert. Then as I got better understanding of his life, I see that his last concert should be a part of his legacy. That was his life. If you are a true Elvis fan, that you know that he gave it all to his fans his last concert before his passing. It seemed as if he knew his end was near.

I’d say my two fav songs are Heartbreak Hotel and It’s Now or Never. And I loooooved this movie, so much so that I’ve watched it 6 times…in a month. 😂 Been going down the rabbit hole ever since. You mentioned that the reaction at his concerts were exaggerated. Nope. Not at all. He literally had his clothes torn off, and at the Russwood Park concert, the police had tried to bring Elvis in earlier, but had to bring him later, right before he went on stage because before the fans mobbed the car and they couldn’t proceed. When he left, again they mobbed the car and carried a police officer and sailor, I believe, up over their heads and back to try and reach Elvis. And yes, the kids clashed physically with police. My husband said his concerts were wild, causing all kinds of angst to the older generation.

Great Review, Seen this movie last night. What a roller-coaster of a movie! Stunning, absolutely amazing music, beautiful cinematography, mad fast beginning, but the 50s sets and costumes and fashion are just fantastic, felt like i jumped into a time machine. Elvis constantly breaking the segregation laws and growing up dirt poor in a black communities incredibility shot and portrayed. Massively entertaining. Too much to take in and amazingly i felt not long enough. It missed out some major events, were was the incredible American Trilogy from Aloha, and relationships, apparently that might be in the 4 hour version! …. Austin butler embodied Elvis, defiantly an Oscar winner. Should have been so much more of the amazing Elvis music. But its still a great ride. Hands down the most entertaining, exciting biopic by far.

Saw it yesterday....a lot of inaccuracies in it. Had Elvis performing the song "Trouble" in '56 when it came out in '58...and he never performed it live until '68. Also couldn't stand the "rap/hip hop" music played when in 1955 Elvis visited the black clubs on Beale St. Showed Elvis popping pills in a car while touring in 1955...he never got into pills until he joined the Army. Also cut straight to Elvis buying Graceland when his first house that he bought after becoming famous was the house on Audubon Drive in Memphis. Showed Elvis in his Army Fatigues with the wrong rank when he met Priscilla. Just a few things that I caught. This was a good movie for the casual Elvis fan...not that true for an Elvis purist.

Not a huge Elvis fan, but I think his best songs are the slower ones, like Can't Help Falling in Love, Always on My Mind & Suspicious Minds, to name a few. Fast dancy ones like Hound Dog and Viva, Jailhouse Rock, etc are great to drive or dance to, sure, but don't have the depth and breadth of his ballads.

I don't know how accurate the movie is to his real life, but the movie showed him to be a solid person, especially his connection to the black community. My only compliant for this movie is that I wished they had extended his singing performances rather than this choppy clips we got. Austin Butler was great as Elvis -speaking and singing. So, I would not mind a 3 hour movie just to see the whole performances to some of the songs. Maybe in the physical release, we will get an extended cut? Wonderful movie for someone who does not consider myself an Elvis fan.

If yu lived thru the elvis years, you will like this movie. How many actors have tried to be elvis in movies and it falls flat because each actor kept being themselves not elvis. Like Kurt Russell. I never stopped seeing kurt, it just wasn't believable. You can tell Austin really studied elvis for two years before they started filming. I am very impressed with Austin. I was lucky to see Elvis in Vegas at the international hotel in 1971. It was exactly how Austin performs it. There's 4 hrs of this, I would pay to see.

I would like to see an elvis movie told by his memphis mafia including girlfriend linda thompson and cousin billy smith. They were the ones who seen what really happened. Pricilla was kept home and kept out of the loop of elvis tours and movie making. That to me would be an entertaining movie.
