Great performance. In 1999, I saw Dylan play a tiny club in NYC called Tramps and Elvis came out for the encore and they did a duet of "I Shall Be Released." It was an honor to be there.

I so loved seeing that dylan band from late 90's//earlier 2000s (not 100% sure about time line), but saw them so many times. Sexton, Garnier, Larry Campbell, and David Kemper was an amazing band. I thought I heard Sexton was back on tour with Bob, but apparently not. I know it was grueling for him, always being on the road and high performance expectations from Bob...cost him a marriage I believe he mentioned in an interview. Cheers!

This was the marketing idea of his first manager, Jake Riviera. He'd rarely give interviews, barely talk to the crowd, and spit out his songs at double time. It's quite remarkable how loquacious he's become now that he's begun to establish himself in the business.

I'm an enormous OG Costello fan. "This Year's Model" changed my life circa 1978 at age 16 and I've stuck with him since but I'm really concerned about what I'm hearing on these recent You-Tube videos. This actually isn't the worst but, while he still has lots of power in his voice, he goes in and out of key and it's painful for me to listen. I'm wondering if this started with his brush with cancer a while back. I have only great affection for him and everything he's done so it's painful for me. I once saw Tony Bennett sing about 10-15 years back and I was impressed by how he worked around his aging vocal chords with fascinating arrangements that drew the best out of him and created something really beautiful. I wonder if Elvis could somehow trade some of that power for better pitch.
@Genre99
@Genre99 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I love EC, but I cannot convince myself that he’s just bending notes, exploring dissonance. His voice is shot, and has been since he got sick. Maybe he needs extended rest, or maybe the time has come for him to retire his pipes.😢
@ForwardtoYesterday
@ForwardtoYesterday Жыл бұрын
@@Genre99 It's weird because he still has plenty of power in his voice, which is usually the first thing to go with older singers, especially if they don't care for "their instrument" and I gather that he has. (He's a second generation pop-belter after all.) I f he didn't seem so on top of conversations in interviews, I'd worry that maybe he was going deaf because it really sounds to me like he can't hear himself. With a legend like this, no one wants to tell them to stop performing especially when everyone seems to like him personally so much these days. I just hope he somehow finds his way to a really amazing voice coach or deals with whatever the problem is. Some kind of mild brain damage affecting his singing pitch? Who knows?

Never got over Costello's throwing it all away. From great new wave sound for five records and going into other genres. I mean Get Happy showed he could do a lot and do it good but nothing much of his country flavored or crooner style was to my liking. Few change styles so much and I understand he didn't want to repeat his early works of genius but only a few songs like Blue Chair or 45 were good. I think few artists change style but they usually go country. His best work according to the critics is Shipbuilding and it's not bad but I don't get it. His best work was This Years Model and Get Happy. And then he's insufferable to the State of Israel as he doesn't understand the complexities of nations and human relations.
