It’s not only about the moves, but everything combined: the looks, the humor, the charisma, the beauty, the humbleness, the playfulness and the list goes on. He had it all. He could just stay still and smirk once or give a certain look and everyone would freak out 😆 I watched others react to him, and you are one of my favorites, great reactions ❤️

There was so much hype about him, that the 1st time he was on the Ed Sullivan show, 82.6% of the TV viewers tuned in. It was his handsome sexiness, his hair style, moves, smile, confidence, eye movements and sense of humor and playfulness, at a time when sex was kept under wrap. Some adults, and seasoned crooners thought he was vulgar and and dangerous and that rock & roll was garbage music. The Colonel’s promotion of Elvis also contributed to his sudden fame.

The musicians are the ones on the small stage during the 68 Comeback Special. At least 2 of them, maybe all, started with him. That's part of what made it so special. They were with him for years, so they shared most of those early experiences. It was Elvis with old friends.

To answer your question in the 50's I was 11 and my dad would not let me watch him. No one had used sexy moves like that. People called it devil music. He was so gorgeous and sexy he just put you in a trance. He also made you feel that he was just singing to you. He was also one of the first to actually interact with the fans. I am 78 now and will love him forever.

The new 'picture' was his first movie "Love Me Tender." We screamed because we wanted him to know how much we enjoyed seeing him having fun and appreciating us, playing with us. As a 14-year old girl in 1956, I remember reading that every 14-year old girl in the country was in love with him. I also remember reading in the newspaper how he would be forgotten in 6 months.

86.2% of TV viewers in America tuned into to watch Elvis on Ed Sullivan that Sept Sunday night in 1956. He had had #1 hits since earlier in the year, and adults and the press were calling his Elvis the Pelvis, and worse due to his dancing in June, on the Milton Berle show. He had been featured in teen magazines, and newspapers and Ed Sullivan had said he’d never have Elvis on his show do the gyrating moves. Elvis hair was different, he was handsome, funny, sexy and good singer and dancer, and had already been given a movie contract. His first of 31 movies opened Thanksgiving in 1956 with much fanfare and long lines to see it. Love Me Tender, he didn’t have star billing, but due to his popularity he had star billing for all the rest. I and many critics think his 1958 movie, King Creole was his best role. Walter Matthau, who was in the movie, thought Elvis was a good actor.

His moves were not something anyone else was doing and he was beautiful and coordinated and he could sing. But I think most of it was that he did it all with humor.

The funniest part of this particular performance is when he said “can I have you attention please” as if he wasn’t the center of attention the second he walked out. If you watch some documentaries about him, you will see that there were people who didn’t like him when he came out. They thought his dance moves were vulgar and he shouldn’t be on tv dancing like that.

Your reactions to Elvis are amazing! He recorded over 700 songs in all different genres at all different stages of his career, and I hope you'll keep reacting to his music after you've seen the movie. This series of live performance clips will give you a small glimpse into his versatility: Elvis Presley - Music Evolution (1954-1977) (7:32). It was that he was moving at all. If you watch any of the 50s entertainment television, singers just.... stood there. Maybe they snapped their fingers, but they didn't move. If they did, then it was choreographed dancing. Then Elvis comes along, and he not only moves, he moves his HIPS, stands on his TOES, wiggles himself all the way across the stage in a frenzy of feeling the music. There was no choreography, he just moved how he felt the beat. People lost their fucking MINDS. The kids/teens/young adults loved it. The adults... not so much. He was a threat to them and their way of life - not only because of the moves, but the style of singing he brought to the masses, the "race music", and therefore, he was corrupting their kids. People tried to get his records banned, have him thrown in jail for indecency - all kinds of crazy bullshit, that today wouldn't even move the needle. But Elvis was the first. And he dragged the culture from "How Much Is That Doggy In the Window" all the way into "Hound Dog", and he did it while many were kicking and screaming. He changed everything. I just binged a bunch of your reactions and they've been fantastic. You have some great insight.

The reason is simple...Along with his good looks and charm nobody ever did those moves on the stage before in the 1950's and teenage girls looked at him as the forbidden fruit. It was considered obscene moving your hips and legs like that back then.

His moves were considered taboo at the time, he grew up in Tupelo MS and got a lot of influence from the African American blues style of that time and white people weren’t doing those kind of things. I think this was his second appearance on Ed Sullivan and the first one they literally would only show him from the waist up.

In the 1950s society was very prudish and repressed. So his movements were considered lewd. Also there was racial segregation at that time and his movements were considered "too black.". He was also the first artist to do more than just stand there onstage.

Man you should really check out his show from earlier that year in 1956. It was on a variety show that wasn't quite as popular as Ed Sullivan but it was still really major and it was a huge exposure for him. It was called the Milton Berle show. And this is when most of America got to see all his moves and his personality and it just created all kinds of reactions, both extremely positive and also a lot of negative and frankly racist reactions. And in fact it led to him being filmed only from the waist up after that for a while. I'm surprised that they're showing his whole body on this Ed Sullivan Show because the Milton Berle show led to him doing the had sold and show appearances later that year. And had Sullivan had originally said that he would never have Elvis on because rock and roll was just the worst thing to ever happen to America and he thought Elvis was vulgar. But then when Elvis became worth lots of money after that Milton Pearl show, he booked him for four appearances. And so in the Ed Sullivan version he definitely tones down his moves. This is a condensed clip of it from a documentary and it's less than 3 minutes long but you should know that the band never rehearse that it goes to have Tempo. It's just that it was over so quick Elvis wanted it to keep going and he was always so unpredictable, so he kept it going at halftime. And that allow them to do his dance moves in slow motion which actually takes a lot of core strength, the guy was quite the athlete. But then audience when even crazier and it just became this huge television ratings success. And his band followed along without flinching. But make sure to watch the last 30 seconds of this very short clip because they actually sample some of the racist reactions that happened to this performance. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4jNaJWCrbJjsMk

Before Elvis, nobody white really moved and gyrated on stage at all. The white establishment associated that kind of behavior with black performers, which most white kids had never been exposed to. It was a sexual display that you didn't see anywhere in "white" society, especially on TV. That's why he was so denounced at the time, and also why the kids loved it. He was breaking a taboo, and blurring the line between white and black music performance. The particular moves were not as important as the fact that he had the balls to do it openly and without shame. He also was cracking the door open for black artists to reach the larger white audience. He didn't steal Big Mama Thorton's Hound Dog, or any other of the "black" songs he performed. He was opening the minds of a generation of white kids to styles of music that had been off limits to them.

You have to realize, back then hadn't even had to twist yet. So he shook his legs like that it was like he was doing something really vulgar! Before Elvis when it came to White performers, it was pretty much just crooners like Frank Sinatra Bing Crosby like that! Then here comes Elvis, he was the first one to really cut loose and be kind of uninhibited.
