In an interview, Paul Simon (who wrote the song) said that Elvis's version was the best of all of them. He also said: "I've lost my song to Elvis." Can't get better praise than that.

This man could just sing anything and make it amazing. Just incredible. No dancing, no huge light show or stuff going on behind him.. just his amazing voice.. captured the audience.. then the Sweet Inspirations would come in .. sing amazing backup vocals.. but Elvis was the Voice you heard.

Thanks for sharing Elvis. He is such a great singer. His band that consisted of Ronnie Tutt, drummer; Jerry Schef, bass; James Burton and John Wilkinson, guitar, and Glenn Hardin, piano were fantastic musicians. Most of them played with Elvis until his death. ❤

Charlie Hodge on acoustic rhythm guitar & also harmonised with Elvis when needed, & Elvis’ right hand man. Elvis loved Charlie & had a bedroom with his name on the door in all of his homes, & no-one else was allowed to sleep in that room.

Charlie seemed like a friend to Elvis.Also, his band was true to him. Ronnie played for several singers, including Neil Diamond, and said Elvis was the best. Ronnie said Elvis didn’t tell him what to play. James Burton cared for Elvis, and stated the movie didn’t tell all the parts correctly. I saw Ronnie, James and Glenn playing a tribute for Elvis. The Sweet Inspirations said many wonderful things about Elvis. JD Sumner loved Elvis dearly. He struggled from crying during an interview. The Stamp Quartet appeared to care for Elvis, too. I still question the motives of the Memphis Mafia. Maybe they were good people, but I didn’t grasp that. To sum it all up, Elvis was loved by many. I listen to Elvis daily through videos. He was gorgeous, and his outfits were outstanding.

Hi Mike Whitney houston's mother was a back up singer for elvis and sitting right behind him. She said in an interview that elvis took good care of jis back up singers paying them 65,000 per year with Benny's and that was way beck then equivelent to now days around 250,000. So he was very generous.

Wow is right! Every time I watch this I can't help but wonder what little thing caused him to look over his right shoulder (7:08) towards where Charlie Hodge stood. On occasion you would see him glance over to his right or left w-a slightly irritated look if he picked up on something that displeased him --- something that we out here couldn't possibly know about, but everything just rolled right along so smoothly.

I'm going to throw out a few suggestions, 2 of which hardly get recommendations so I hope that won't be a deterrent because they are both marvelous but for 2 different reasons. #`1. not live but accompanied by beautiful photos -- the point of this song is THAT VOICE -- it just may be the epitome of hearing what his voice was capable of leading up to a glass shattering finish -- "Tomorrow Never Comes" (1970) at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5m8pXVtpc-eiZI (4:12 min.). #2. I refer to this as "the water throwing incident" from his 1972 Hampton Roads, Virginia concert -- @ very, very start of the video Elvis called out “Please Release Me” but the band began playing “I Can’t Stop Loving You” - he didn’t stop them, he went right into the song, then walking over to his glass of water, picked it up & playfully threw it at Glen @ piano -- a fun, powerhouse, energetic performance; a different Elvis w-a slightly deeper, richer voice at kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn_XgWh9mZ2Efac (2:25 min.) --sometimes the video does not pick up his voice @ extreme beginning so back it up to be sure you hear him say Please Release Me, then the water incident will make sense; also note his slightly irritated look @ beginning. Below Belinda recommended "What Now My Love" from the rehearsal show -- he did a rehearsal show prior to the live one & we are both in agreement that this song from the rehearsal show tops the live version. At any rate, It's at kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6HNfJ-Fgpx-h5Y (3:14 min.). Thx so much.

I truly think the saddest thing is that Colonel Parker was his manager.. he was a Felon here in the states and he wouldn't allow Elvis to go overseas.. because he couldn't go overseas.. Anyone that wanted to see Elvis live had to come to the states. Totally hurt Elvis's career in my mind. In today's society.. wouldn't have happened I think. That man took so much money from Elvis and denied Elvis many opportunites

Some fans may not agree, but in my opinion Elvis’ first love was acting. His life long dream was to be an actor who was taken seriously in the industry. Sadly, due to the enormous financial success of his musically based lightweight movies, Elvis did not get to realise his dream, which I believe contributed to his clinical depression and untimely death. But Elvis used his natural acting ability in the way he delivered his songs. As you said, his arrangements built the drama, pulled it back and then built it up to a climactic close. First and foremost Elvis was the ultimate actor, who took his audience with him all the way.
@carolhayar3037

I've been saying forever the 2 main things that he wanted most of all was to tour overseas & become a serious actor & never seeing that to fruition absolutely added to his despondency.
