This song was a feature of, although not always a permanent part of, Elvis’ set list between 1971 and 1975. In that period, Elvis is known to have performed the song live on at least one hundred and ten occasions with all but twenty four being sung either in Las Vegas or Lake Tahoe.
This entry in the series focuses purely on those recorded in Lake Tahoe’s Sahara Hotel during the three residences at which Elvis performed I’m Leavin’. Volume thirteen in this series gives a broader view at the song being perfomed during the four years that Elvis was using it on stage.
Elvis always seemed to be more at ease in Lake Tahoe than Las Vegas and generally speaking the shows seem to reflect this. This is most certainly evident in Elvis’ reading of this wonderful song in Lake Tahoe and is one if the reasons that this volume in the series features on those renditions. Further volumes will focus both on the tour renditions and those in Las Vegas.
Purists will undoubtedly gravitate toward the 1971 renditions, in spite of the poorer audio, as they are very close to the studio version, both in tempo and vocal delivery. The later renditions are certainly at a quicker tempo but this is not an unfamiliar trait in many songs which transition from the studio to concert arena.
Regardless of your thoughts on the tempo at which the song is being delivered, the sincerity of Elvis’ own performance in never in doubt.

Absolutely great mellow country rock, sung with Elvis' mournful yet strong and rich voice, with beautiful falsetto in treble and exellent control over tone dynamics!!!...And I think they are all great versions, not subject to evaluation or comparison, because Elvis sang it to the best of his ability in each version.
