Toms story is not at all true. I worked as the manager of Mike Ladd's Guitar City. I was there when Vernon Presley came in to get the birthday gift for Elvis. Tom did not make that guitar from parts from the Gibson factory in Memphis. There was no Gibson factory in Memphis until 2001. At the time we customized the guitar for Elvis, Gibson's only factory was in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Elvis acoustic was picked out by his dad from two Gibson Heritage models that were on display in Mike Ladd's store. That guitar is not a Gibson Dove. We did send it to Nashville to have the inlay done and when it returned Tom and Tommy Stinson did the paint job. Elvis's dad gave us two different decals, the one that is still on the guitar and one of a tiger that we applied to the pickguard that was later removed.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience and story! It’s important to the history to have both recollections of how that guitar came about. I can’t say what’s true and what’s not since I wasn’t there, I’m sure some recollections get hazy decades on. I appreciate you finding this video and adding your memories to it. I’ll pin your comment so it comes up at the top ⚡️

That Dove guitar is my favorite of Elvis' guitars and it just kills me that Graceland wouldn't have it on display across the street with Elvis' other things. Like you said, it's one of the most photographed and I remember seeing it in movie magazines...before there was the internet. I appreciate the story of how it came about though. Just wish it was in the Elvis collection. I have always loved the "handwriting" of his name on the fret board. Boy, it sure is intricate...and beautiful. Good choice for a topic, Ashley.

I was never able to see it up close like this, thanks for the close ups. That silver inlay is incredible. Pictures just don't do justice to the world that was Elvis. I recently saw a fan vid of his concert where he wore the peacock suit, wow... was it spectacular to see the sparkles when he danced around. I’d like to correct a humble mistake. As far as I know the Kenpo decal had nothing to do with Kang Rhee. But it had everything to do with Elvis’ body guard Ed Parker aka American Kenpo Grandmaster. Ed Parker trained Elvis after Kang Rhee. Kang taught Elvis Taekwondo karate & not Kenpo like the decal on the Gibson. I was told about this from Sonny West & Charlie Hodge which were close friends of mine. R.I.P.

It's fascinating to know the guitar came from a shop right across the street from Graceland and with a decal provided by Vernon? It's kinda crazy when you think of such a simple purchase from a small business shop (yes, some customization was done) and then months later Elvis Presley steps in front of the world with it in the historic Aloha from Hawaii show. That was really special! It was a beautiful guitar. The first time I've ever seen close ups of it. Poor Vernon I know his feelings were probably very hurt. Hi, Ashley! I just discovered you a few weeks ago and love your stuff! I love the back story of this guitar because of the impact on my life it had. No, not an impact like someone hitting me with it! It was the Kenpo decal. I had always heard about Elvis and Karate, but I was never able to nail down the Who, What, where and why of it all. Then one day in 1991 I was watching a movie called "The Perfect Weapon" starring a man named Jeff Speakman. Mr. Speakman had a very close relationship to Grand Master Ed Parker and was one of Mr. Parker's last Black Belts. It was in the movie that I saw the IKKA crest. The movie itself featured mainly Kenpo Karate as it's action style. That and Tae Kwon Do. Because of that guitar and that emblem I ended up studying Kenpo for about fifteen years! Awesome stuff.

I've been dealing in vintage Martin and Gibson guitars for 25 years and that Gibson Dove has a few things that tell a story as well….On back of the headstock under the stamped serial number there is the number 2….that means that guitar was a factory second guitar because the finish or something else about the workmanship didn't pass final inspection. The back and sides should be made out of maple and the front and back binding are exactly the same. If another back had been put on by them…then the job was exucuted flawlessly…not saying anyone is lying but I find it hard to believe that guitar didn't have a back when they got it…something isn't passing the smell test. I've known George Gruhn for 40 years and Randy Wood for about as long and knew Tut Taylor. The guitars fingerboard as stated was done back then at GTR…which stood for George, Tut and Randy which later on became Gruhn guitars. And I am connected to Asheville as well as Asheville is my hometown.

It's been a long time so facts can get blurry. Kang Rhee had nothing to do with this decal as it's an American Kenpo crest designed by Ed Parker. Rhee's studio was a TKD/Pasaryu dojo (which Elvis also studied). He's correct however, in that they are water transfer decals (not a vinyl sticker). I have some of them (unused) from when they were still produced by Ed Parker in the 70's. Great story, Ashley!

Models include the Dove Performer (with a Fishman Prefix T Pickup), the Dove Quilt (limited to 20 made with a quilted maple back and sides), the Doves in Flight (with extra ornaments), and the Elvis Presley Dove, based on the 1969 custom Dove that Elvis used in the early 1970s Elvis used many Guitars throughout his touring in the 70's another was his Gibson J 200 Ebony from March 1974 in Tulsa, Elvis applied a Kenpo Karate decal to the body in September, thrown into the audience on July 15, 1975 at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, Massachusetts after breaking a string and who knows where that Guitar is today , But it was the Red Hagstrom viking 2 a Guitar he borrowed from a session player in the 68 come back singing Trouble/Guitar man that sold for a record U.S $625,000 in 2021, the Kempo decal was not restricted to the Gibson Dove Vernon purchased him as Elvis had been putting on his Guitars before that .

Bravo for sharing your story about the dove and its history! I recently, and very sadly sold my absolutely gorgeous, originally purchased by my friend at a Texas guitar shop back in 77, stunning black with pearl inlay Gibson dove including the pickguard with the mother of pearl dove. I refuse to sell it to just anyone and I held out until an older and experienced guy that had my asking price sat down in my living room and prove to me how much he loved it. with the money from the purchase

With the money I got from the sale I was able to buy a really nice GMC pickup truck as well as two very very nice gifts for my mother and father! confidentially, he paid me market value Plus $500 extra because I had the original case and the original card from Gibson with the serial number, cheers!

ASHLEY-----> Alert----whenever i watch your videos I end up finding out other things as well as the information you provided. It looks like there was 2 of these black Dove Gibson guitars. They both have the decal, but only one has the Elvis Presley fretwork on it. And the other one has flowers on the pickguard and this one doesn't. There are lots of pics of both guitars on the internet. The fact that both guitars have the decal, makes me wonder if we are missing some facts. It looks like the other one, was used mainly in 1974 but this one was used in 1973 & 1975. Why he stopped using it and then took it up again 2 years later? Before your video, I just didn't look that closely at the guitar to even notice the differences. and now I wonder, who made the other one?? I might spend a few more minutes and see what else I can find out. thanks. Ok--update.....here's what if found. Apparently he gave both of them away to audience members during the same tour in July.....Weird. "1969 Gibson Dove Ebony 539461 November 1971 - September 1973, July 1975 Given to audience member Mike Harris during a concert on July 24, 1975 in Asheville, North Carolina, saying, "This is yours. Hold on to that. Hopefully, it'll be valuable one day." 1968 Gibson J-200 Ebony 618195 March 1974 - July 1975 First used on March 1, 1974 in Tulsa, applied a Kenpo Karate decal to the body in September, thrown into the audience on July 15, 1975 at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, Massachusetts after breaking a string."

Ed parker was Elvis body guard. Ed was the father of American Karate. He introduced karate to America. He had this huge diamond ring that Elvis gifted him and it was always the topic of convetsation. Elvis trained in Kenpo Karate with Ed Parker and achieved his black belt. Vernon requested the guitar was black to represent Elvis being a black belt. Check out my videos of my Elvis Dove replica.

Elvis was given a black Gibson J-200 with his name on the fretboard that a fan named Jim Curtin and Elvis kept that one and I believe is still in the collection somewhere at Graceland. Elvis Also had another black Gibson J-200 that he got he got in 74' but threw that one out in the audience, I believe in 75' sometime and a woman got that one and I think it was auctioned off a few years back also.

Well this busted a myth. That has been floating around since the Aloha from Hi concert. And that was an Air Force Airman asked Elvis to put his Squadrons Emblem on his Guitar. The Karate sticker is made in the same style as those Air Force Logo's.
@ashleysadventures3 жыл бұрын
Really? I've never heard that. Could that be the sticker on the black Gibson J200?
@michaellandreth13923 жыл бұрын
@@ashleysadventures Yes that's the one. It looks just like or at least close enough to the Air Force's Ensignia patch I think they call it. It's a Squadron pride thing. Navy and Marines have them too for their planes. And the personal in that Sqd. They just copied the style for the Karate Sticker. A Military one would have the Sqd # too.For years I thought it was from the AF. LOL
