He adapted this song, repeating the chorus numerous times, for live performances so that he could entertain the audience. He also threw in random funny lyrics. Shove it up your nose is not one of the lyrics on the studio recording. Lol.

Elvis was fantastic! My grandmother, who was born in 1910, absolutely loved him. We used to laugh because she said she liked seeming him wiggle his hips! (grandpa didn't mind. after all he thought Marilyn Monroe was the bomb.) There was a time early in Elvis' career when television networks would not show him from the waist down because they thought his "gyrations" were too lewd and obscene. When my grandmother was buried, the music at her funeral was a compilation of Elvis hymns, which she loved as much as his other singing. R.I.P Grandma and Elvis too.

You can tell Elvis is really enjoying himself here and the crowd and accompaniment along with him. Shout out also the drummer Ronnie Tutt, the bass guitar player Jerry Scheff and the backup singers, the Sweet Inspirations. Elvis framed his incredible voice with the best around him.

@@traceycater Absolutely! The Jordanaires are fantastic. However, in 1970-71 the male backup singers to Elvis during live performances were the Imperials who would be replace later by JD Sumner and the Stamps. But we can't disregard the contribution the Jordainaires made to the whole Elvis sound in the 50s and 60s.

I just recently learned that Elvis was a great admirer of Jackie Wilson (one of my favorites, you would enjoy "To Be Loved" and "Work Out Baby") and went to see him perform often. He was also a fan of Ivory Joe Hunter ("Since I Met You, Baby"). Lots of pictures of them together around. The three became good friends. Jackie Wilson was a great performer (had been a boxer) but way too early, he suffered a heart attack and had complications that interfered with his career. Ivory Joe Hunter was diagnosed with cancer. Elvis helped pay both their medical bills. No fanfare, no publicity. Why? Probably because he could at that time. Both the men were not able to work and had families. And, mostly, they were friends. You can confirm this on internet. Why was he so playful even on stage? He didn't take himself seriously and he wasn't trying to be somebody he wasn't. How many humble stars do you know? Love your reactions.

Elvis didn't dance, I put more modern singers in that category (Modonna, Mjackson, hiphop, etc). They usually rehearse movies with at least 3 dancers, and are not spontaneous, it's been practiced. But Elvis was totally fluid with the music. He moved to it however he felt in the moment. He didn't intentionally practice moves as dances, and then reproduce the moves later in concert, it was spontaneous. He incorporated pieces of his karate into it, and it became another level! As he said once, I just do what I feel, and the people seem to like it.

Written by Mark James. James said that one night, he was fooling around on his guitar & had what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." And that is how & why this song came to be.

No way, he was not high whatsoever, let alone "high as a kite" He took downers to sleep and upper to wake up because long term use of sleeping pills results in dependence and the need to constantly increase the dosage, so over time a lot is needed which is very hard on the body and there is the need for uppers in the am just to "wake the body up". The only other "drugs" he took were in the last few years for pain...extremely painful digestive condition (both heredity, and linked to long term sleeping pill usage) which was life threatening and he was hospitalized for it two or more times, and there was no treatment for--I listened to the doctors who were interviewed and explained the extremely serious, painful health condition Elvis had (mostly related to long term sleeping pill dependence in order to sleep--he had insomnia from childhood...a known common condition for someone who loses their twin at birth), as well as serious glaucoma (extremely painful) also linked to sleeping pills, and two back injuries he had sustained that caused him pain. Elvis never, ever talked about health issues or about being in pain with any of his entourage--with them he maintained a strong leadership "position" and he was extremely private about his health. Only a very, very small circle of people knew what Elvis was going through. Charlie Hodge, one of his best--if not his best friend--has many times explained that Elvis was in a lot of pain, and took only the amount of pain medication needed and to still be able to function/perform, because performing well was the most important thing to him. Charlie said Elvis was often in pain when performing those last couple of years because he didn't want to take too much, that would interfere with performing. When he died he was taking a lot of medications related to his health conditions, as well as pain medications, sleeping med/pills, and needed uppers (again, just to wake up his body, essentially). Charlie also said Elvis actually didn't like the feeling of being high. Whatever you have heard are assumptions that were made, and adopted as truth by many and they proliferate the internet. Also Elvis only drank alcohol once or twice a year--such as a glass of champagne at a wedding for example--(the green glass bottles you often see him holding and drinking from, were Mountain Valley spring water which was famous in that region). He once or twice tried LSD.

what do you mean "he wasn't ALLOWED to dance" -- what exactly is that supposed to mean?? re: high as a kite - i disagree but even so, what the hell did it matter -- he spent his life performing night after night, yr. after yr. for people who appreciated him -- why even mention it! there was much more to him & what he did & went through than to mention being high. Btw, he had the genetic condition called A-1 antitrypsin which causes COPD/emphysema began early in his life & began using an inhaler to help him breath. He also had painful glaucoma. More important to talk about his serious health issues & how he managed to do what he did than to bring up drugs; & btw, he wasn't dancing -- he was MOVING to the feel of the music; but there was no such thing as not being allowed -- that doesn't even make sense.

@@Wildlife_SA. you are a dick head and people like you keep me entertained. Elvis started using drugs in the army back in 1958. Check this out In 1970 Elvis writes to President Nixon (the I am not a crook guy) and offers his services to help combat illicit drug use in the USA. Elvis mentioned that he knew a lot about drugs and was accepted by the hippies. He said he could go right into a group of young people or hippies and be accepted which he felt could be helpful to him in his drug drive. Nixon and Elvis exchanged pleasantries and agreed that “those who use drugs are in the vanguard of American protest.” In 1977 Elvis dies of drug overdose and drug abuse. Putting Elvis in charge of speaking on narcotic abuse is like leaving Dracula in charge of the blood bank. Hypocrisy: What is an example of hypocrisy? People who tell you not to eat candy while they chomp away on candy all day.
