This is the Elvis I love...walking home alone after being on national TV. He didn’t need a cast of thousands to meet him. Humble and sweet. Thanks so much for these pictures. Very touching

This story really touches the soul of every Elvis fan sir, probably THE LAST walk he had of a normal life and the length of the walk makes one wonder just what he was thinking about during the walk, I like to think he was having a conversation with God and thanking him for the talent that He had blessed him with....I really enjoy these stories you share with the world, Thank You.

Thank you SG! Elvis “You’ll never walk alone”, after getting off that train on White. It was interesting seeing Elvis walk alone. Maybe he wanted to be by himself to reflect after being on national T.V. Appreciate what SG, Ashley, and Trey do. It is so informative for all the millions of diehard Elvis fans.

The pics on here are iconic taken by Alfred Wertheimer. They are available in book form....Elvis 56 and Elvis on the brink of fame.Have been displayed in galleries in New York. There are hundreds of them from New York to Memphis to Virginia. Coming back to this particular section.......Elvis decided to walk home. Alfred took his pics and then bundled up his stuff and got himself to Audobon Drive and was welcomed by everyone and took more pics in the pool, with his mom etc. Scotty, Bill, the colonel and Elvis cousin Junior were with him on the train so they came up the rear with all their kit and got off at the next stop. Elvis got off here bcuz it was nearer his house than Memphis central but he had to ask that lady for directions as they had only recently moved to Audobon. Alfred was called upon by Ann Fulchino to photograph Elvis in New York in March 56 and then in June. He decided to follow Elvis down to Memphis to see him on his own turf and he did this at his own expense. So he photographed Elvis in New York at two RCA sessions, in Richmond and in Memphis at home and the concert at Russwood Park.
@luvjesuslee20335 жыл бұрын
So greatful he followed Elvis onto Memphis and continued to photograph. I wasn't born yet so I can see Elvis as the person before he became so famous he couldn't be his relaxed true self all the time. I bet he was full of excitement wanting to hurry home for several reasons. Love these photographs.
@chairlesnicol672 Жыл бұрын
BEEGEEK GEE So even as early as July1956 Elvis had sort of an entourage be behind him! He had Scotty, Junior ,Col Tom,n Bill right alongside him on that train ride! Even the photographer fellow Alfred! Prolly bought chicken for all of them bc before he completed his walk home to Gladys n Vern ! Prolly still wanted a peanut-butter n banana sandwich after he arrived home to hug n kiss Mom! Lol

Another excellent video Billy. I can hear Elvis now muttering to himself as he is walking through that field, "After tonight I'll make sure I'll never have to do this again!" Walking through that field was probably the last time he was a normal unknown person.

STUDE 1953 Prolly saying to himself " What am I gonna tell Mom now", I just bought some fried chicken n I'm not very hungry now lol! He's prolly deciding what colour of Cadillac he's gonna get and it better have ac! After walking in Memphis humid July day in a suit! Where was his suitcase BTW he was sure travelling lite doncha think? No record player that he used on the train ride home either! Don't believe he was giving away stuff just yet so where did Elvis belongings go?

One thing that sticks out in my mind is when Elvis had that press conference and some question was asked about opinions of celebrities and Elvis says I am just an entertainer. Yeah just an entertainer Lol arguably the most gifted one to ever walk the planet.

This is sooo cool. This was probably one of the last times Elvis walked down the street alone and it was caught beautifully on film. When I visited Memphis, my hotel was in East Memphis right on Park Ave, so I drove down Poplar and by here quite a few times! So cool to hear some of this buildings are still there. Imagine walking home in that July heat in a suit... He tightened up indeed. :)
@chairlesnicol672 Жыл бұрын
Boston_Rachel Where was his suitcase n record player? Did he give them away before walking home? Why was he asking for direction ? He was already 19 n had lived in Memphis for quite awhile, n he still never knew? Didn't he drive a delivery truck in around town f oh r an HR electrical outfit? It's hard to deliver without knowing your way around! Lol! I see in the still picture Elvis had only what looks like a tablet or thick magazine in his right hand as he's walking, And for a hot July day wearing that suit was a mistake,oh boy! But nice to see Elvis was not a fussy eater when he stopped for some "down to earth southern fried chicken" ! To heck with Gladys home cooking! ,he says this time! Just made part of his $50,000 fee for appearance on Ed Sullivan show!

Thanks so much, Spa Guy, for sharing this. Wertheimer, the photographer, stayed on the train and he captured Elvis walking into the dusty field, probably the last time he could walk alone, without being mobbed. Its a haunting photo of a young man on the brink of stardom. Wertheimer's photo books of this tour, the train ride, etc. are available in the online big bookstores, usually from third party sellers....beautiful, large, coffee table books, all black and white, well worth owning. A bittersweet glimpse into the distant past, in the life of the king.

Just saw this now. I’ve been so fascinated with this moment in his life for awhile now. I’ve spent numerous hours trying to line up and see exactly where this occurred, but it wasn’t making sense. You explained it perfectly, i.e Mendenhall being extended south was the missing piece of the puzzle. Not to be overlooked is the fact that Elvis got off the train and was walking through the neighborhoods with his acetates of Hound Dog and Don’t Be Cruel, (recorded the previous day), that he had been listening to on the portable phonograph he used on the train. Simply Unbelievable….. great work Bill! Your passion comes through in your videos. Love them!
