I met Shaun Nielsen in the early 90's. He was doing a set at this small hole-in-the-wall joint in Jacksonville, Florida. I must've been about 12 yrs old, but a HUGE Elvis fan. So, when friends of my mother informed her that one of Elvis' backup singers would be performing at this local bar, she contacted the owner of the establishment. We could slip inside, but because of my age and the type of place it was, we couldn't stay more than fifteen to twenty minutes; just long enough to meet Mr. Nielsen. We arrived just before his set. Think of a lone DJ setting up his own equipment, that was what the scene looked like. He shook my hand and briefly answered my silly kid questions about Elvis. Then, without removing it from his neck, he leaned forward and let me hold the TCB charm that Elvis had given him and those closest to him. As more people trickled into the bar, the owner told my mother it was time we wrapped it up. Shaun was now seated at a booth across from some young lady. Being a kid, and feeling as if this would be the closest I'd ever come to Elvis, I left my mother's side and bee-lined it to where they were sitting. It was extremely rude of me, but I was young and excited: in the middle of their conversation, I piped up and asked, "Do you have anything I can have?" Hey, I was pressed for time! Shaun looked up and smiled, as if to say, "You little shit, you're messing up my game." He was super cool about it all though, and got up from his seat. "C'mere," he said, "I got sumpin' you may like." I followed him over to his setup/gear and he unearthed a large album--a Photo Album! As he flipped through the pages, I couldn't believe what I was seeing: little snippets of never-before-seen photos of Elvis' crew ...and Elvis, himself! Shaun plucked out a photo of him and Elvis side-by-side on stage together, flipped it over, and inscribed it to me. I have it to this day. From the photos I glimpsed at in that album, he and Elvis appeared to be close friends. This toying with one another on stage, I'd bet the farm that that was all it was, playful jabs. Brotherly love. Shaun loved Elvis, and Elvis loved him.

@@ElvisistheMan_ Just singing. He didn't speak in a high soprano ...just a normal sounding voice. He was very kind. Getting the photo from him was wonderful, but getting to hold his TCB necklace (and meet him, of course) was the highlight. I just couldn't believe that I was touching one of the TCB necklaces that Elvis gave to his friends. I laid in bed all that night just thinking about it. Pretty weird, I know, but I was a super fan!

Well, if it BECOMES a word, I claim copyright!!!!!) female artists, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, his OWN backup singers throughout his career (The Jordanaires and when he politely tells the crowd to, Shhh, during, Sweet, Sweet Spirit...), and those other great singers with those...VOICES (AND moves...), you know, the ones I'm talking about...Anne Murray...eh...

Elvis had say on what kind of outfits his groups wore. Usually they more or less coordinated with what he wore on stage. I think it was planned ahead of time what Sherrill would wear so Elvis could have some fun. He was pretty savvy in that area. Yes he's was out of shape but he never lost his sense of humor. You still see that glint in his eyes when he's having fun rubbing somebody.

David. Just as a side note. In Feb or Mar 1983, I had the pleasure of meeting Sherrill Nielsen as he was performing under the name Shaun Nielsen. Met him at a hotel in Houston Tx. Had a very nice conversation with him at his intermission. I asked about the name and he admitted that he indeed was THAT Sherill Nielsen! I even bought him a Coca Cola. He had not sang or mentioned Elvis during the first half of his show. Reason? He was trying to get another career post Elvis and he said that once people new he sang for Elvis, that was what he was expected to sing! Funny thing is, after intermission, he open the show to requests. Everyone wanted him to sing Ol Sole Mio! LOL. True story. J think the fans knew who he was!

If anyone was jealous it was Sherrill Nielson wishing he looked half as good as Elvis. Elvis' jumpsuits are beautiful and what SN was wearing in this clip doesn't compare to the Aztec Sundial suit in this video or any other suit for that matter. I'm sure Elvis had the final say so as to stage attire so not to be upstaged. He was just funning S.N.

Seen this loads of times over the last 40 years or so, took it as teasing/banter, with nearly all who shared a stage with him, still see it that way, it's how were back in the 70's, no envy, jealousy meant at all...tho maybe a touch of envy, but that's healthy man, right! Means you recognise someone else's Talents and that you're not a big head who thinks you're the only one that exists! Loved it when Elvis teased and also named/acknowledged all his stage crew... I was somewhere over Christmas, listening to a 1960s band and at the end of the night the same thing, the lead singer named all his other band members, with a little bit of teasing, reminded me of Elvis....more bands with a lead singer should do that today! Man I was whooping, hollering & clapping...on my little vids ha ha

A main reason is maybe because there is a sad tone to the last concert, but I watch the '77 special all the time, and the main reason I love this video (like all of your great videos) you bring out the human and fun side of Elvis...I love that!! Yes Elvis's sense of humor, smile, laughs, and jokes that so many people have already commented on....thank you for showing in this short video. Something I always wondered… Elvis looks more like himself on June 19, even though he isn’t well and slurring his words he looks handsome…but in the Sioux Falls concert on the 21st he doesn’t look himself. Especially backstage before the show. I’ve read that it was like that, one day he would look good and the next he wouldn’t look so good. This is such a great moment and I think Elvis was teasing Sherrill but like you said there’s a little bit of truth in it. Thank you again for a great video!

I had the ELVIS IN CONCERT album from 1977 on which this video is based. Elvis was about to sing It's Now Or Never. Before he did so, he politely asked Sherrill Nielsen to sing O Solo Mio: The song on which It's Now Or Never is based. Sherrill Nielsen was easily able to perform the song in a three octaves sliding up and down the scale. After the song was over, Elvis heaped praise on Sherrill. They apparently got along well.

Ive seen that , Elvis had only one suit that would fit at this stage he wore the sundial suit the most in 77 maybe he was conscious of this fact? , I think Elvis may have been projecting his insecurities on to Sherill at this late stage of his life , he must have been conscious of his weight gain and physical fragility due to his worsening health and drug addiction , Elvis would not have had Sherril in the group if he did not like him , actually voice were an added addition to the stamps Elvis added around 1973 for a large amount of extra money to an already expensive stage show when Parker heard he was doing this he freaked out I think it was 75K a year extra .

At the later concerts he would forget words to songs bc was so drugged up, & did a lot of joking, & walking bc was out of breath . There is one, of audio only , where he goes on & on about someone saying he a drug addict, is really pissed off " I've never been STRUNG OUT" goes on , repeating . Some later concerts were a disaster, , but his faithful fans didn't care ..

I had never seen this before, and I have seen many Elvis videos and most the same over again. But ai have never seen this. I am with u, they were marking fun and jokes about each other. But I’m positive Elvis loved his voice and his style in clothes as well. Elvis loved clothes as well.

I think Elvis was the most flamboyant performer on stage since his very beginning. Humble personality mixed with his artistic charm and natural talent assured him not being just another narcissistic person...

I think it was just a joke on Elvis' part. Elvis would admire Sherryl's voice and if Elvis was really jealous he would have just fired 😉

Yes, a joke only but towards the end Elvis and his band introductions were way too long. Perhaps Elvis let others shine and he needed time to breathe. It's a combination of mutual admiration, exhaustion and humor. In 1969 that wouldn't have happened. Elvis knew his time was coming to an end so he was as relaxed as he could be. He was simply being himself and had no need to overshadow anyone and no one could've done that. Nice clip and remembered the line well before watching...🖖

It breaks my heart to see Elvis in 76 especially 1977 He is so bloated. I love his voice in those years, but I never look at the videos also because he died 6-8 weeks later. 😢

There's no way Elvis was jealous. I believe he admired talent, especially great talent. He wanted to be surrounded by great talent. Look at those he had there. I think, if he also messed with anyone, it was because he kept close and comfortable enough with them that he knew they would know manner of respect and admiration in which it was meant. Elvis liked humor. Elvis liked to laugh. And Elvis liked to make people laugh... genuine laugh, not an obligated laugh

So funny. Really enjoyed this post. I think your spot on , I think Elv noticed sherryl he was getting a bit big for his boots and very gently was reminding him who paid the bills , and who the top cat was regardless of the fact he was only 50 percent of what he had been by this time in his life . His charisma carries him through. Personally too I think Elv could have easily have crooned his shows and would have been as great as the others you mention. He had the vocals to sing anything.

Agree with Brett ☺️ If Elvis was actually jealous 🤣 why Elvis hired and he never fired Sherill Nielsen. Elvis had an operatic voice and he was able to croon. Elvis would have a tenor, operatic, rapsy and baritone voice all in one song.

I'm sure E just looked to get a connection with band, then Audience. He needed to connect due to the drugs. They took away his connection, but he never meant to disconnect from fans nor performance, but he was addicted. Part of his connection was to have feedback from band / orchestra. But he was slipping at the end, that's why other people's Egos took advantage of his stage. Only one Elvus ❤️
